Author Topic: California Cams Confirmed in 1998 49 state bike  (Read 3490 times)

I have numerous publications about the reviews/testing of '98 valkyries (which I have) and it was always stated how HP/Ftlbs were down about 10 hp from the '97 model. It was also stated that ALL '98 bikes (49 state and Ca.) had the California cams. Some reviews of '99 bikes only had 4 HP more than '98 bikes. This could be dyno racing.

Well just checked my 49 state '98 cams, (valve adjustment time and then Digi Sync) and they have a stamping No. R2 which are the California cams. so it seems all of the publications are correct.

Hmmm, never noticed a stamp. What kind of stamp and where ?  I guess I now will just have to have a look see.

Maybe the fuel mileage has something to do with it [ the valve timing is greatly different between the camshafts] as I've always gotten 40+ mpg.

see the link for a pic. all u need to do is take the valve cover off and rotate the cam/engine until u see the stamped number. The camshaft holder does not need to be removed.

what is interesting is procaliber parts list different cams for 49 state and Ca emission bikes for all yrs, even the 1998 bikes. It's an easy check and if one wants to gain 10 HP and 10 Ft/lbs its a camshaft change away.
one article I have stated that the '97 bike that dyno'd the famous 100 hp/102 lbsft was a 49 state bike and was a pre-production pilot bike.
There have been some other articles suggesting that all or most non-'97 bikes have the Ca cams due to the lower dyno'd HP #s.
