Hi gang, I'm pulling apart my forks for powder coating and have ran into a snag; how do I get these pieces apart?

I read online to use a 8MM hex on the bottom of the forks but I don't have an 8MM on the bottom of my forks.

Do they come apart?

When I was wrecking my IS, I was told that the tubes unscrew from the lowers. I tried. Believe me I tried. I had bent tubes that had no value, and ends that someone wanted.

I had them in a vise. A large old plumbers pipe wrench. Even a little heat with a plumbing torch. Not a move at all. Just scratches from the vise jaws and the tools.

I'd probably end up like gordonv, but supposedly they unscrew...

It's a royal PITA to get them off. I got mine PC'd with the tubes attached without any issues.

You can leave them together but they will unscrew, just make sure they're totally empty and clean inside. The heat will cook the crap left in there and will be impossible to remove then. If you're getting the entire fork PC'd, I sure wouldn't bother separating them. If only the bottom, still OK to leave them together, just make sure the inside is clean as mentioned. I've seen them separated but only after a lot of effort, the locking goo they use on the threads is something to behold. A fellow at the plant told me they use that stuff " 'cuz we just as soon you didn't take them apart."  That was good enough for me.  Wink

Powder coat them together don't try to take them apart, they can use high temp tape to tape off the tubes, and to Bronxboy what a nice looking bike, you should post some pictures.
