I am new to the forum and owning a Valkyrie.  I was well versed in my GL 1100 of 30 years.
The engine in it seized up on my trip last summer.
I replaced it with a 98 Valkyrie 1500CT.

I am in the process of replacing the front tire. I took the two bolts off each caliper.
Loosened the 4 pinch bolts, and bolt out of the axle.

I did not take the rotors off. When I placed the tire and calipers in place,  I noticed the bolt that holds the left caliper was rubbing the rotor. I basically have no clearance on the upper outer calpber where the rotor fits.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Before you tighten the axle pinch bolts, you should check/adjust the clearance between the caliper bracket and rotor. The service manual says it should be no less than 0.7mm (.03in) on each side. When I did mine, I found no way to adjust this on the right side, but could on the left by sliding the fork lowers. I found it the hard way, too, on the first road test; got about 100 feet and returned to find out what I heard hitting. That's when I got out the manual.

There is a very definite SEQUENCE to pull or reinstall either wheel-front/rear. Can't post a link but look up in the tech archives-front wheel install. I know the axle has to be ALL the way in the non nut side tightened forks bounced but the sequence HAS to be followed for roper line up of EVERYTHING. RIDE SAFE.

There's a mark on the axle that should line up with the outside edge of the speedo gear housing and the fork lower should be out to the left so that the end of the fork is absolutely flush with the end of the axle

Thank You for the correct info.
Will check out the mark in the morning. I knew there was a hidden secret. The service manual did not mention this at all (that I could find)

Thanks for the quick reply.

If you have the Honda Service Manual, look at page 13-15 for the info on checking caliper clearance.
What you need to know is that the right fork is not adjustable but the left fork can move in and out on the big end of the axle.
You set the caliper clearance by moving the left fork toward the wheel or away from the wheel before you tighten the left pinch bolts.

You can also assemble everything but leave the left pinch bolts loose. Apply the front brake and bounce the front end a number of times. This should center the caliper over the rotor. Then tighten the left pinch bolts and check for proper clearance at the left caliper.

this happened to me a week ago when i changed tires... went out all happy to test ride my baby and there was a nasty noise. removed the caliper but i could not figure out what was wrong as there is no adjustment. i googled and i found a link to a post on this same forum and read about the axle.

all i did was loosened the pinch bolts then with a hammer and a piece of wood and banged the axle to seat it on its correct position. tightened everything back and no more noise.
