Author Topic: Which Car tire handles most like a MC tire?  (Read 2587 times)

I bet you guys are just sick of this discussion, I promise that I searched the threads 1st. The problem is, so many of the tires mentioned are discontinued. IF there is a car tire that really stands out from the rest in the handeling dept, please fill me in. I am a solo rider, in a stripped down Valk. Im doing a hot rod bobber build and I want a big ol' fat tire that hooks up and stops well. I bought a toyo proxes online and then 4 days later I got an email stating the tire was too old to sell, guess it was made a few years ago..Thanks everyone.

What model of the Toyo Proxes? I have the R1R with a wear rating of 140, which is discontinued but someone else got one with a 200 rating and he still loves it and I love it...some love the Austone and some others love the _____ made by _____ in ___/___-16

Here's a link to my post earlier this year when I mounted a Kuhmo 195/60r16. Read through it, draw your own conclusions, it has been a good tire so far. The previous one was a 205/60r16 of a different brand, the model is no longer available.  cooldude

I run a 205 60 Goodyear (which is not the most bike-like tire), but a lot of folks have really liked this tire for near-bike-like-tire ride(with good traction and mileage). (just a bit tall at 175 65)(and just a bit lower RPMs)

I will be fabbing up a custom seat using the pan from an OEM seat I bought off Ebay, slim, narrow, deep bucket with a lot of sizzle, I have some gator belly  skin from a 730lb monster gator I killed in 2015 that I may cover it with. Too bad I dyed in brown. maybe I can get it dyed black and then do it. Im tellin ya, this is gonna be 1 sick Valk..Happy new Year!

Wow ! Very interesting. Do you skin and tan them yourself ? If not, how much does it run to have that done ? And which tires did you go with ?

I love both the ATT and this Yoko, I am leaning to the Yoko even tho it is wider but doesn't feel like it.

It's interesting to me that a number of the better car tires (for our bikes) in 205 look more rounded (on the edges) than others.  The uninflated picture of that Yoko Envigor looks very rounded.  But the inflated, installed picture looks pretty square, just like most inflated and mounted 205s do.  Including my Goodyear Tripletreds.

I am not trying to be critical of you or your tire choice at all.  That tire looks great to me.  I run performance Yokos on my car.

Of course there's more things than just rounded edges that go into a good car tire for Valks (compounds, sidewall stiffness, tread design, load ratings, etc).  But mounted up they all seem fairly square to me.  I'm just sayin' .

Square or not, they handle and perform just great for me, and I'll never run a bike tire in back again.

This is the rear tire I'm going to run on my Dbl Dark Side Bobber project.  General G-max AS-03. Got it in the 195/55/16 size to keep her as low as possible w/o her falling over while on the side stand and give me a little room between the tire and swingarm.. I ordered 2 of them, one in the 195/50/16 and this one.  The 195/50/16 looked to low.  Ordered them online, got them in 2 days at my local Walmart tire dept, decided which I wanted and returned the other right then and there.

I'm stickin with the ATT. Very much like a bike tire.  Part of the bad handling of others comes from picking tires so wide. I've run two different Yokohamas which were pretty good but not like the ATT. Both were 205's. I don't think the ATT looks as good but the handling is what counts for me. Add the larger diameter with the dropped RPMs - talkin about 3500 at 85 indicated which delivers 34mpg even at high speed.  And of course the other improvements of the darkside (better grip including better braking, traction when slippery - wet, mud & snow, better puncture resistance, much longer life, and lower cost (not much lower with the ATT)) and it's a no-brainer.

George has a Metz.  Deerslayer still with the Vredestein snow tire.  Marty has a Cobra.  George will stay with bike tires being a show bike and bobber. Marty will be sold next season. Deerslayer - no changes planned for now.

Wow ! Very interesting. Do you skin and tan them yourself ? If not, how much does it run to have that done ? And which tires did you go with ?
my hunting buddies had the skin tanned, dyed, one had a pair of boots made. Awesome too. I'll have our local interior fab shop stitch it in. It's brown like the boots but no reason she can't dye it black. Maybe I should have a leather shop dye it just to be sure. It's gonna look so cool people will probably think it's fake gator till I show them the photos!

If you're going to mess with it, think about having a (matching black) tank bib made at the same time. Or dye up enough material and send it to our sponsor Talisman (see top of page) and have them make you one.  A seat and tank bib of gator skin would be pretty unique.

Has anyone running the AustoneTT had issues with bottoming out on bumps?  I loved the ATT, but was afraid I was going to tear up my wiring or cut the tire it rubbed so often.  I had IS stock shocks set on 5, air shocks set at 100 psi, nothing helped.  I finally went to a Vredestein, and it rubbed on the side.

I sure have bottomed out and tore apart the box that hides the taillight plug, and I also have I/S shocks set at 5 now, was at 4 when rubbed box off, and this is the only reason I didn't put the ATT on my I/S. We ride 2 up 75% of the time

Yeah, my bike rubbed the rear fender wiring enough to strip it (but not short before I caught it), and only with a 205 60 CT. 

I'm not a fan of going fast over bad roads (as opposed to being a fanatical fan of going fast over good roads), and only ever ride one up.  I blame the shocks for that particular problem, not the tire.  It turned out one side had leaked down quite a bit of fluid, and I may have only been running with a spring on that side: the bags hid the problem. 

So with the 65 profile ATT, I'd have good shocks set hard with two up.  And with the 175 width, I'd still do the fender nut cage mod, but it might not even be necessary on that tire.  Nut cages rub on the sidewall.

I did the nut cage mod on Jade as a matter of course when setting the bike up.  ATT at 43#.  I have 444 std length shocks with 145-200 springs preload at 4 turns. Have hauled my bro prob 210# And I'm 270, with no rubbing.  Pulled a heavy 700# trailer to Inzane with no rubbing.  BTW IIRC on one of the web sites assoc with the ATT I recall they mentioned a profile of 175/75.  Unusual profile but it's an unusual tire company - originally out of Australia - name is from AUSTrailia # ONE tires; now associated with Cooper Tire and made in China specifically for British Taxis.  So I think you need adequate shocks to avoid rubbing.

been riding a Ct now for over 8 years. the 2 best things i can tell you to look for in a CT is 1 pick a CT with round sidewalls. it handles more like a MT. 2 thread type look for one that will displace water and grip the road ( 2 being your thread design that pleases you ) but most of all round sidewalls. have run square and round. round always out performs the square. then match the tire PSI to how you ride. 1 up or 2. ride safe

I ran that 195/55-16 size on my IS last year (2015). Lasted about 14,000 miles (it was an Avid EnVigor).

The problem with getting that short on sidewall is "TOO MUCH RIGHT HANDED FUN". 2funny
I frequently pulled out in 2nd gear, especially if I was planning to blow someone's doors off. 1st gear just didn't seem worth bothering with for the .0875 seconds I was able to stay in that gear, lol.

I had run a 205/60-16 and enjoyed that just fine. Might have been a 205/65.
I now have an ATT on it, just like my 93 1500 Daily Driver has.
Its last ATT went 34,000 miles (WITH a brake job / spline lube in between).

In other words, short sidewall does not contribute to long tread life if you are enthusiastic with the throttle. Since you effectively lowered the effective final drive ratio into HOTROD territory by using a short sidewall, have fun and buy your new tire when (IF!) you hit the 10,000 mile mark or so. Trust me, you'll wear it out faster than you think, but at that price - I think that was part of your plan all along.

Do be careful with the sidestand!

She's gonna be my "bomb around town" ride.  Taking all the unneeded weight off, like the crash guards, rear pass pegs, grab rails, front fender, rear fender, OEM blinkers & tail light, etc.

Getting only 10K on that tire is ok with me, it'll take some time to do that, got too many in the harum.

I'm especially looking forward to spring this year. Wink
