It's official

I got us the Comfort Inn at
20 Saw Mill River Rd, Hawthorne, NY 10532
Phone: (914) 592-8600

Say "OssFallRide" for the $130 plus tax rate which is a whole bunch off the regular rate.  They will hold TEN rooms until 2 weeks before

If you want to camp please google CROTON POINT PARK in Croton On Hudson

The dates of the rides will be Saturday and Sunday October 7 and 8

Please call the hotel at the number above if you are interested and of course let me know on this thread as well.  If you are in PM me your contact # (in case you follow a bunch of goldwings and get lost like Rob did)

I have no problem with Gman hosting dinner Sunday by the way just park below his house on the street not on the driveway (its STEEP)  The hotel is less than 4 miles from my house and about the same from Gman's house. There is a diner and an Appleby's next to the hotel and a gas station across the street

This is NOT a NYC ride   It will feature the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountain region  with some history food and great roads,

I can get you here without passing anywhere close to nyc  just PM me and you will have a great time

2funny and they weren't even friendly GoldWing riders.  Shocked I can give my 2 thumbs up to the hotel. It was nice. The Applebee's, not so much though. I hope all you guys have as much fun as Brenda and I did last year.  cooldude

I'm interested.

It's still too early for me to commit though.

I've invited a couple of riding buddies as well, but they haven't given me an answer yet.

BUMP for those interested

also the big ride details are below  260 miles or so

This will be the longest ride of the weekend starting 830 gassed up, breakfast already eaten (the 3  S's done as DDT says)

First up route 9 along the Hudson Rivers's east bank, climbing the goat trail to and over bear mountain bridge, the Palisades spur and over the big  mountain on rt 6 west. We will take 17 for one exit (exit 130) which is 208 North. That has us in Orange County farm country and we start to climb the Shawangunk ridge which is the Appalachian Mountains.
At about mile 63 just over the top there will be a left turn pull off onto an awesome overlook and our first stop, but no bathroom there.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawangunk_Ridge
at top of Shawangunk  range then at walden we make a left on 52
another left on 42 (make sure I go NORTH this time lol)
a few miles to a left on 55L . I had wanted to take 55 north from the lunch break on the Delaware Water Gap during last years ride but lunch took too long.  Lunch can be like herding cats so this year we eat lunch after the jewel of Claryville road

somewhere around here we will take a bathroom& gas break
Within 3 miles is one of the gems of this ride,  Claryville road, which becomes Frost Valley then Oliverea Rd (19 to 47) and goes past Slide Mountain, which is the highest mountain in the Catskills   This road runs through deep woods along streams the whole way both up to Slide and past to the end

https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/images/slide/SMW-slide-00-15.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/SMW-slide.html&h=360&w=480&tbnid=jx1mrbxCx2eTlM:&tbnh=160&tbnw=213&usg=__omfD1gdUylXDo4tqZv4d2fsxjyM=&vet=10ahUKEwjFw86ioorWAhWF0YMKHZMaDKUQ_B0IgAEwCg..i&docid=Dt_9pyItDvPepM&itg=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjFw86ioorWAhWF0YMKHZMaDKUQ_B0IgAEwCg#h=360&imgdii=XzydA5lqMLNq5M:&tbnh=160&tbnw=213&vet=10ahUKEwjFw86ioorWAhWF0YMKHZMaDKUQ_B0IgAEwCg..i&w=480
[I will pull over and yield to riders who want to proceed at a brisk pace at the turn off for this strech of road so all can ride their own ride picking up the lead again at 28]
There are a few places where the shoulder is gone but they are marked with red cones, no worries.

At the end we will turn right on 28 for a mile or so then left on 42 to climb for mile after mile  watching the colors along the mountains at or near peak
a Right on 23A  takes us past Hunter Mountain, the famous ski mountain  Colors here will be PEAK on Columbus weekend, hence the ride to this area

23a east heading onto Tannersville is a cool road with sweet drops into town, y'all will like it  If  possible we will use a pull off but its a small one Lunch will be in Hunter or Tannersville  That will also be final gas stop as the ride home on the Taconic will not have any stops and requires your full attention. (deer, hiding leo and wild turkey)  The colors on the Taconic will be awesome up north.

We can from there either take 23 over the Rip Van Winkle bridge and then 82 to the Taconic  or head south to Saugerties and cross further south to the Taconic as the time dictates

and of course there will be a side trip to ice cream about 70 miles down the Taconic and the Croton Dam (the icing on the cake )

Sounds good!

I hope that these are your plans for Saturday's ride.

I'm planning on riding up on Friday but will have to head for home on Sunday.

Turns out that I can't get Monday off.

I'm still looking for someone to ride up with, but that's not a deal breaker.

Is anyone interested in splitting the cost of a room?

I'm only staying Friday and Saturday night.

But if you need the room for Sunday night also we can work something out.

I haven't made a reservation yet, I thought that I would ask here first.

Oss,
Sorry for the late response as well. New job and lots of travel.
I'm in. There, that settles it! cooldude cooldude

If you are on the fence as to going or not, last years run was FANTASTIC! Oss knows the area history and you will be amazed at the places he takes us and the things you will see..It is a trip worth taking from anywhere....even if you do get mixed up with a bunch of unfriendly Wing riders.... And Rob, I won't tell what happened in the back of the van between you and Brenda... What happens in Ossining...... Grin Grin

I will ride up on Friday and meet at your house for the Saturday ride. I will need to head back to PA on Sunday as I have to fly out really early Monday morning.

Thanks Jim and Mark

Gary what do you say.  You said you wanted to be cooking one meal so how is SUNDAY evening?

I think the group really enjoyed the Portugese place, cheap, lots of great food and beer so we can hit that again on Sat nite

It looks like there will have to be another scouting ride after the hurricane passes as my guess is there will be a lot of flooding around here from Sept 14 to 18   Lets hope that Irma does not wash out my favorite roads.

If any of you book the hotel let me know what nites please

Just to sweeten the pot, if you like covered bridges there are 2 right before and at the beginning of the Claryville Rd

One is in Neversink Park and the other is the Halls Mills Covered Bridge in Neversink off Hunter Rd a few miles up the road

Halls Mills Covered Bridge

The bridge: This 130-foot bridge is closed to vehicle traffic, but open to pedestrians crossing the Neversink River.

Find it: It's located just south of Claryville in Sullivan County, on what's called the Hunter Road Spur off of Hunter Road. There's a small parking area near the bridge for two cars. | GPS: 41.890505, -74.589776

Chestnut Creek Covered Bridge

The bridge: Also knowns as the Grahamsville Bridge, was built in 1976 at the entrance of Neversink Park. It is a steel structure that accommodates vehicles. Pedestrians walk on the outside along a walkway.

Find it: The bridge is west of the village of Grahamsville on Route 55. | GPS: 41.854555, -74.554872

Actually, an early bird dinner would be better.  Friday night, since we're doing a BBQ lunch the next day, maybe Italian?

Would be great to get a head count of who will be attending.

What could possibly go wrong?

Well...............
He was supposed to. I had it all finished and ready to be transported to IZ. THEN, his wife is successful at getting a new job working for Univ. of Alaska Fairbanks. She took it and they all moved to Dillingham (satellite campus) last month. With 20 miles of road out there, the bike wasn't headed that way! We ended up shipping both bikes to IZ and he was able to ride it for the week. Big time pucker factor on a new to you bike at 10,000 feet and it starts hailing and raining! But he made it (very proud of him). We were up on Beartooth just hours before the group that went down in the snow covered road.
Best option was for me to have Ron bring it back to KY. I flew in there late July and rode her home (900 + miles).
So, she sits alongside my other Valk and I now ride them both. Gotta keep them in tip top shape, ya' know... angel angel
The deal is that I will hold onto his for at least 2 years.

They are doing well. They have a little cabin in the woods and  all three adults (our oldest daughter who lived with them in ID moved as well) are gainfully employed. They had a bear visiting twice last weekend and they are learning very quickly how to make every last thing count and not throw much away. They had thought for several years about living in AK and now it is a reality.
Thanks for asking, Rob!

Sorry for the late reply Oss. I seldom read the general board, but I am in. You have one heck of a ride planned for Saturday. Those are some of my favorite roads. Awesome ...
Harry, it will be good to see you again! Now...do I ride the Jade and Green lady or do I ride the Project bike?? Lots to ponder....

You as well Jim. It will be good to rekindle friendships for sure.  To Oss and the crew, I have a couple of friends who are interested, but they ride...uh..Harleys. Smiley. These are my best friends, quality folks, and experienced riders. OK if they tag along? I wasn't sure if this ride was closed to all but Hondas.
