I know you all like us to keep you updated along the way. We've zoned in on a possible/probable location! We'll be scouting the location in 2 weeks. The potential GZ hotel looks pretty cool and so far they seem willing to provide everything we need/want.
If this site works out, we're looking at Jun 9 for early bird gathering; June 10-14 event dates.
As far as hints.... it's probably within range for Serk to allow Vanna to pilot to the event. No, not Serk's house.

Now the pressure's on to get her licensed and some road experience on the Valk! She's learning an important lesson in government bureaucracy now, it's taken 3 trips to the DPS to get permission to get an account so that she can log on and schedule her driving test. They're currently scheduling driving tests 45-90 days out at the soonest. So, just curious and not germane to this post of course, roughly how far, just a ballpark, is an acceptable range for a 16 year old with less than a year's riding experience riding a Valkyrie? Totally off topic question that just popped into my head, mind you.

Hmm. I don't think Taos (NM) has big hotels. I could be FOS however - haven't been there in years. I hope the location isn't too hot. Close to Dallas - gonna be warm that far South. Unless it also has elevation. Yep there's some height in NM.

I haven’t been there in a long time either. A quick look at a map gave me the idea of Hot Springs or Taos.

Come on ! You’ve already got the entire NSA apparatus at your disposal. Now you want her to say how far it is from your house ?

I'm totally serious. The Valk was only my 2nd bike myself, and she's young, but she's also almost 6'2". And... she's past the first minute already, has about an hour on a Valk so far of just practicing and getting a feel for it. Edit to add - She'll be spending the majority of her riding time on this, but if she progresses enough, I'll put her on the Valk when she's got enough time on the Helix, and if she's doing well enough in time for Inzane, I see no reason to deny her the ride, if she's proven herself ready at that time.

Okay, now that I understand "piloting" means riding, not flying, that increases the radius to the point of being meaningless. Even a new rider can ride pretty much any distance given enough time, and a teenager will probably feel better the next morning than her old man will, unless she is stressed out most of the time while riding. I don't think Kali will suffer from this, however, with her level of self-confidence.

I started riding at 15 years, 2 months (I think Kali is a bit older). I had a permit for 10 months. By the time I got my license on my 16th birthday, I had been riding a Honda 750 Four everywhere (and that was in California). And Kali is about a foot taller than I was at that time. Aside from slow speed stuff, a bigger bike is actually easier to ride. She'll do fine.

I’d bet my bottom dollar he is not going to put her in a position over her head. That being said, it’s a cursed good thing I started out on a Suzuki 90 vs a Valkyrie.

Someone learning to ride should not be on anything larger than a 500cc non sport bike. As a former motorcycle riding instructor, I will say that generally speaking what you say is true. There are factors that affect the likeliness and speed of learning to ride a motorcycle proficiently, in no particular order: 1. Natural ability - strength (i.e. someone who is weak for their size has a handicap), athleticism/coordination, and ability to learn quickly (intelligence). 2. Confidence - this is not I-can-do-anything-I-put-my-mind-to arrogance, but is courage plus knowledge of my own limitations, with a willingness to trust knowledgeable people when they tell me I can succeed if I push the envelope in a controlled way. 3. Ability to assess and make decisions concerning risk - this encompasses doing research into the risks, balancing risk vs. reward including the effect of my action on others, and the ability to apply this knowledge in a critical instant. 3. Attitude - This encompasses 2 and 3, but also includes perseverance in the face of difficulty, a concern for the safety of all others sharing the road with me, and a willingness to be taught, i.e., allowing that I don't already know everything, and that anyone could have something valuable to teach me, and continual self-assessment and correction of my riding. Serk is in a better position than I am to assess Kali's ability to safely ride a large, powerful motorcycle. If she gains a lot of experience between now and InZane XIX, she very well may have the ability to pilot that trip.

Visa vi the Valk, I think the best thing for her success is to tell her to just drop it if it starts to go over or get away from her. This is not to minimize good reactions and defensive and braking maneuvers, only in cases where trying to stop an inevitable fall will cause her more damage than jumping clear.
Let the bike bounce. They do it just fine with little to minimal damage at slow speeds where most learners have mishaps. (Well, interstates and tourers with rear guards do, not sure about standards.)
When lifting a bike off one of my (male) trainees (he was pinned underneath and could not get out on his own), I asked him why he didn't get out of the way as it dumped. He said, oh this bike is so beautiful (it had been my wife's pristine Honda VLX 600) I stayed under it to cushion the fall.
I sh!t you not. When I got done laughing, I told him that was his choice, but it was not a good one.
Fortunately he did not have hot pipes laying on his body or face.

I think Kansas' politics is OK.

Yeah, an 800 mile circle from my house covers a LOT of territory: However, looking closer at the large area, I'm making a TOTAL WAG and guessing it'd be in one of the red circled areas. There are other possibilities, F6Gal does like to surprise us sometimes, but this is my Serkle 1.0 prediction, and admittedly I'm going WAY out on a limb here...

Just to clarify... I believe Willow's comment was his opinion regarding an acceptable range for a 16 year old with less than a year's riding experience on a Valkyrie. Nothing to to with distance to the site being considered. That said, the site we are considering is within the 800 mile radius. However, it will not be in Mexico nor the Gulf. Edit: Nor Kansas!

Serk, are you serious???
Not even a minute. A valk is a pretty large bike to have a person that young riding it and so new to riding. The question should be...how many times will it be dropped in the first hour. Someone learning to ride should not be on anything larger than a 500cc non sport bike.
Since you're in Texas, she has to take the MSF course first and then take the DPS riding and written test (under18). You can also schedule the DMV test in a relatively nearby small town with no long waiting list. You will have to take the bike (in totally legal shape and taken there in a totally legal manner), a car, and a driver to DMV for that test. The MSF classes provide the bike for that class.

Hmm. I don't think Taos (NM) has big hotels. I could be FOS however - haven't been there in years. I hope the location isn't too hot.
I haven’t been there in a long time either. A quick look at a map gave me the idea of Hot Springs or Taos. Taos would suck. Went through there on a week day a week ago. Horrible to get around with them tiny roads. If you add a c to Taos you get Tacos, and who doesn't love Tacos?

Yeah, an 800 mile circle from my house covers a LOT of territory: However, looking closer at the large area, I'm making a TOTAL WAG and guessing it'd be in one of the red circled areas. There are other possibilities, F6Gal does like to surprise us sometimes, but this is my Serkle 1.0 prediction, and admittedly I'm going WAY out on a limb here... Well first picking Serk who lives in the centre of the US as the bases for a 800 mile circle is nice, covers both the West and the East coasts. I suppose I'll need to wait for more hints or actual postings of a location to figure out where. I see it nicks SD again, would mean an extra days ride to reach the south east end, based upon how long I took to get to Spearfish, but to be able to see more in the Black Hills would be nice too.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I rule out Northern NM as there is nothing big enough to hold a IZ. Unless it Santa Fe, but it is the capitol. Albuq is a possibility but a lot of Rez around it.
