Frye you make a couple of good points but also some very errant points. IE the plate unsuccessfully Installed in your leg? The way it is “installed “ ( as you call it) has ZERO to do with getting an infection. Anytime the human body is exposed to a surgical wound it is a possibility to get an infection. Has nothing to do with the “installation” of an implant. Just sayin. Been “installing “ implants for over 30 yrs.

The infection didn't come from the plate as far as I know. However, my leg was constantly, discolored and horribly painful after the install and I had an unavoidable limp because of it. Within a year or two the screw heads became apparent pushing up under the skin and seemed to be coming out of the bone. A new doctor confirmed they were coming loose and had to be removed along with the plate. A few weeks after having the plate removed my pain was nearly unbearable and I convinced my son to look under the cast with a flashlight. He discovered the incision had opened, the bone was exposed and my leg "stank". That led to emergency surgery, the removal of bad tissue and months on a wound vac. My leg is still discolored years later as you can perhaps see from the picture I took just now. One screw which was separate from the plate and is still in the bone as the doctor deemed removing it would be too damaging. The months on the wound vac were the nastiest thing I have every experienced and I've often felt I would have been better off to have let the leg just heal without ever allowing the plate and screws to be installed. Since I couldn't be off work without a medical industry excuse I couldn't have done that without loosing my job however. Hard to say at this point what would have been the best course of action. Easy to see at this point that refusing the bone plate would have been a better option as far as my health is concerned though. I'll see if I can figure out how to post some pics of the leg today and of what it looked like then.

Pictures of the leg just now and what it was like when it went bad. I could have chummed for catfish with this leg for quite a while there and was lucky the neighbors cats didn't try to bury me. https://photos.shutterfly.com/album/40252817254

The screws loosened because of the infection. If one gets an infection with hardware in that is where the infection goes and almost impossible to get rid of infection without removing implants. BTW infection rate for such a procedure (unless it is an open fracture) is less than 2%. You my friend were just one of the unlucky 2% it seems. Also wound vacs are a wonderful device. I have seen it save limbs that 10 years ago would have been amputated. BTW link wont work unless you sign into shutterfly and I dont have an account.

There's a picture of the hardware that was removed from my leg and that I wish to this day I had never allowed to be installed in it. One screw is still in the leg driven crosswise up into the bone and couldn't be removed. I always meant to have it tigged into some kind of trinket to hang on my bike to remind me not to overload my ass but I never got around to it.

Guess that's why it never quit hurting too. I felt really bad for the Dr. that removed the plate and got stuck dealing with the infection, he was a great guy and Doctor. When I had trouble after the original Dr. installed it (my leg actually appeared to be dead when he removed the cast and swelled up as if it was a water balloon) his nurse told me that his part was done and he refused to see me for a follow up. Great Dr. to be sure...

Great Dr. to be sure... That Dr should have been reported to the state medical board. He CANNOT refuse to see you after he operated on you period. My guess is he didnt want to deal with the complications of the sx. I have said many times if you cant take care of the complications of said sx you shouldnt be doing said sx. Whatever it is.

Only broke the fibula? And why in the hell would he use Titanium implants for an ORIF of The fibula? Mich more costly than SS implants. Also I must say your pictures while traumatic to you that is very mild.

Have to admit, I wish you had been that first Dr. Then there would have probably been no 2nd Dr. needed. I never knew why those screws backed out and the Dr. that removed them never said why. Thanks again for your honesty. Mike PS: from what I heard the guy that did the original work had a number of similar outcomes locally.

You have to understand that an infection is not a anted by any medical professional but it does happen. I can’t begin to tell you the number of patients we take care of that someone else dont want to deal with. It is a shame that someone wont take care of a complication of a sx they did. Do we have to infections? Yes. But do all in our power to remedy the problem. Does it thrn out in our favor all The time? NO. But will not abandon a patient in any circumstance.

@Frye: pretty rough stuff, glad you got better. That being said... I could have chummed for catfish with this leg for quite a while there and was lucky the neighbors cats didn't try to bury me.
That gave me a good laugh! I think it was Nietzsche (?) who said something like 'sense of humor is a good indication of intelligence'.
