OK! I just installed new front speakers. What better way to test them out than a cross country ride? This coincides with my parents' anniversary on June 13th. They are in Cincinnati so it's a WIN WIN. Due to my travel plans it will be Tuesday only, but it will be awesome to see this many Valks in one place at the block party! Someone mentioned coming down via the Michigan UP so I've got that in my route and going over the Mackinac Bridge. That bridge looks like it will be more of an adventure than the 4 mile long Astoria-Megler Bridge over the Columbia River.

But, an experienced rider can handle both. Rams

Indeed! I've done long bridges in the wind and short steel grate/plate bridges in wind and rain, ala Hood Canal Bridge. But none had over a mile of grating like the Mackinac.
Maybe there won't be road construction on the paved lanes in June...haha.... but from what I gather there is always construction on that bridge.

So concerning all the fears some riders have shown over riding the grate, is there any report of an issue ever having occurred because of that grate?

I've crossed the Mac 5 0r 6 times on the Valk and the concrete lanes were always closed. It's kinda neat to be able to look straight down & see the water 700 feet below.

Just one of those things that makes the bike bob and weave when you mean to go straight. If you fight it you can go down. Just gotta relax the body and let the bike ride it out. The rotation of the wheels keeps you going in the right direction, just feels weird having your bike wander a bit underneath you.

My last flat tire was on a grate bridge. Tube tire too, and riding on the rim to get off the bridge was not the good kind of excitement. I recommend NOT looking down through the grate when crossing the Big Mac. Vertigo happens. Here's a fun local bridge crossing from VA to MD. (301) So many people get freaked out, they have guys to hire to drive your car over for you. I don't think they do bikes. You have to stand on the pegs to see well over the solid guardrail though.

I suspect that similar to many other things that never make the news, it is something not worthy for lowly bikers should something like that occur. Comes down to comfort level. I'd rather ride on asphalt but, go where the road takes me. Being somewhat of an Acrophobiac, the only reason I got 98 freefalls under my belt was the fact that I was either too stupid to know better or, I was not going to let fear dictate what I did in life. I prefer the later description. Those grates are no where near that kind of challenge for me. Edit: Oh yeah, bump for a really good event! Rams

You haven't lived until you're following someone across a set of bridge grates and the idiot hits his brakes because a seagull flew across in front of his windshield and he hit it. Those grates usually are wet and so braking on two wheels is nowhere near as effective as on four or more. When it's time to get off the bike, it takes a couple minutes to unstick the pucker factor.

Surely there's some folks out there waiting for last minute details. Hope so. I was thinking, staff already has the bike rodeo (or whatever it's called), the charity auction and raffles for fun things to do. Maybe the staff could consider something else. Maybe one of those water tanks things where someone sits on a seat and competitors throw at a target that will dump the person sitting into the water tank? Just an idea for a charity fund money maker. I'm pretty sure that quite a few folks would pay to take a turn if the right person was sitting on that seat. Maybe Staff could volunteer. I know I would gladly be a thrower or a dunkee. But, I'm not that confident anyone would want to see me all wet. Just an idea to raise cash for the charity. Rams

Wondering if the Ultimate Seat folks are coming this year? Would like to try out an Ultimate Big Boy or something other than the stock seat on my other Valkyrie. While this is a bump, I really would like to know. I really like the Ultimate Low Boy I have and thought I'd give the Big Boy a shot.

Rams, I've had the low boy, big boy, and my favorite, the king boy seats at one time or another. The low boy and big boy, to me anyway, were confining because they sweep up at the nose and restrict you movement and crowd the family jewels. The king boy is wider and flatter and allows for some movement to shift around a little.

I'm with Skinhead, the Lowboy had too small a dance floor. The Bigboy was better but Des let me try out a King during Bike Week some years ago when it first came out...I was sold. It's not supposed to be designed with my size in mind(5'10", 210lbs.) but I find it more to my liking than the other two models.

Ron, all you have to do is find someone with a Big Boy that will let you try theirs out. It's only a key-turn and a snap-down away. We're close to the same size, and I have both Low and Big boy and I greatly prefer the Big boy (esp for longer days in the saddle). Never rode the King, but wouldn't want a driver's backrest that mounts to the pillion.
Even with my short legs, I have no trouble getting both feet down easily with Big boy. It does make your windshield get a bit shorter.

Skinhead, I already have a low boy on my fat lady two wheeler. Haven't had those issues. My guess is, you are financially better off and have larger "jewels". It might be the fact that I use my Mick O Pegs a lot while cruising that I don't need that additional room for jewelry. But, I like the low boy on my two wheeled fat lady due to my shorter inseam. The Valkyrie I'm looking for a different seat for is my (new to me) Valkyrie Trike. Don't have to put my feet on the ground so, I'm thinking the taller seat would be a good thing. I'm not stuck on the Big Boy, I'm open to options. Just don't like the stock seat currently on the trike. Planning on bringing both to InZane so, we'll figure something out. Well dog gone it. Guess I'll have to look for alternatives.

I"m #256 and can't wait for InZane, only a 3 1/2 hr. drive from Pittsburgh, PA. I am staying at the Carthage Gap RV Park and I'm pulling my 30' toy hauler, arriving on Monday. My last InZane was in 2004 in Paducah, Ky. Looking forward to meeting everyone old and new.
Anyone know what vendors are coming?
Greg

Although I could be mistaken, I'm think'n that's the same RV park Buddy and Karen (from OK) are staying at. Good folks they are. You'll enjoy meeting and conversing with them. Don't think we've met but, looking forward to that in Athens. Rams
