Great updates, Brian.  Just wish I was there to help in whatever way I could.
Hope you both got some great pie!

This reminds me.  My ex broke, and pushed out her sacrum giving birth to our daughter nearly 50 years ago. I suspect the break went the other way with Kali - so the result no doubt different from this: She (the ex) was a small woman, while the baby was normal sized. Ever after she had a bit of a tail. I'll stop before cracking any tasteless jokes...

BTW the ex is no longer with us, having smoked herself into oblivion.  But I won't mention her name.

Glad to hear your youngun is up and moving.   Accident sounded scary.   Remind her the saying of "only go  as fast as your guarding angle can fly".

Not sure I agree about jumping out of a perfectly  good airplane is less dangerous than jumping off a motorcycle.  I been off several times and walked away, but think I would have a heart attack before falling halfway down after jumping (being pushed) our of a airplane. 2funny

Bikes are loaded (Thanks again Daniel Meyer!) Kali is cozy in the cocoon that my friend Troy made for her and we're on the road... She's feeling much better, relieved to be on the road will feel even better once home...

Glad it's all working out for you guys.   cooldude

(Really) I do not go looking for the storm in every cloud (and I'm not a safety fanatic), but up there with no belt (or tie down) is not great.  Sudden stops should be avoided.

Adult rear-seat passengers are covered by seat belt laws in 31 states and the District of Columbia.

One of those truck bungee nets would do it.   2funny  (I'm sure she would happily tell me where to stick one.)

And don't forget the hi tops.   Smiley

have a safe and Blessed trip home.

suggest looking into Vitamin K2, it forces calcium into the bones for quicker healing. Actually we need it all of the time.
don't confuse K2 with K1 which is a separate vitamin and deals with blood clotting regulation.

God Bless.

We made it roughly halfway home, stopped in Lexington TN for the night... Bikes shifted a hair, might get a new scratch or two but otherwise okay...

Thanks again for the continued thoughts/prayers/etc...

Kali is doing GREAT, the bed setup Troy made for her in the back of the truck is working awesomely...

BTW...... Another in the "VRCC folk are AWESOME folk!" category, I apologize I think you told me you did this, but I've been a bit frazzled since Tuesday so I'm not 100% positive, and I didn't catch who it was if I didn't imagine the conversation but...

...you might be at a VRCC shindig if your bike was wrecked, destroying the left hand rearview mirror, and someone just comes and puts a new one on your bike in the parking lot!

And if you see another part you need from a vendor (I know who this one was but will leave anonymous unless they want credit) who, when I ask how much it was said "Is this for the bike Kali went down on? If so, take it. Please!"

...I couldn't ask to ride with a better group of people...

Thank you one and all!

Kali, myself and my bikes are home safely. Once again thanks to Troy for rescuing us, Psycho and Rams for rescuing us from the hospital, the person who put a new mirror on the Standard (I apologize, you introduced yourself, but I totally missed who it was!), Da Prez for the driver side foot peg and all the tons of other well wishes, prayers, small bits of kindness.....

I'm blessed beyond belief to be a part of such a wonderful group of people.

Was a little too late to get this printed for presentation at the banquet, so we just sent her a digital copy...

BTW, I rode through that area on my way out of Ohio Friday...yah, nasty place. ground out pavement, uneven lanes (by as much as 6-8 inch ridges), no real signage indicating the hazard. A tough transition in the lane I was in...had to swing wide to swing back and get kind of more direct shot at it and not a lot of room to do that...nasty stuff.

Somehow missed the Mothman...or that there even WAS a mothman. Saw the power plant/cooling towers (2.6-gigawatt! Woot!) and the OTHER power plant (just 1.08 gigawatt). Lesseee...that's a mere 3600 windmills in full production...or...like....6 Valks.

Regarding the comments above (and a little off topic) but I have noted, both in my riding through Ohio, West Virginia, and North Carolina, there were many rural roads that had the center part of the lane eroded away.

The erosions I saw were at least six to 10 inches wide in some areas and four or more inches deep.  There were no road markings about dangerous or unsafe conditions.

Also, on some of the rural roads I notice that there were parts of the main roadways that were severally erroded and this seemed to occur in areas of shade. It made them also hard to see.  Again, no warnings on these roads.

Thanks for the picture, she loves it!

And yeah, heading towards the Moth dude thingy, we saw the power plant, though to get pics of it, initially said "Nah, we'll get 'em on the way back" but for some reason we u-turned after 'em, came back, and the very last picture on my phone before the picture of the Valk on its' side was this:

oh man sorry to hear that!
Took a ride down to WV to see this infamous Mothman thingy that I'd ever heard of, and Kali also wanted to tag another state on her "States Ridden In" map.

She technically did ride in WV. For about 1/2 a mile, until the front wheel found a DEEP rut while changing lanes, straightened the wheel up violently, flung her off the bike and the bike over on its' side.

(Disclaimer before the pics - she broke her sacrum, is otherwise okay, and thanks to Rams and Psycho her and my Standard are back to the hotel.)

Moments before the accident.... We were having such a lovely ride.

And at the scene...

This was the road rash she got from inside an armor plated mesh jacket. So glad the Mommy insists she always wear that jacket!

As I said earlier, Psycho and Rams were kind enough to bring their truck and trailer, loaded my Standard up and Kali laid across the back seat and brought them both back to the hotel.

Kali's sitting up in bed texting with her friends. I got her her Rx pain meds and other meds and some beer for daddy now that this day is handled.

Have a few possibilities (THANK YOU for all who have offered! Still trying to figure out what will be best...) to getting her and the Standard home.

The Standard does have some issues, a mirror destroyed, my Kurakyn ISO pegs are smashed off on both sides, the left grip snapped in hald. It starts and runs, I rode it across the hotel parking lot but it's very hesitant to start, the clutch is odd (Release pressure at ALL and it grips) and there was a "kshhhlshhhkshhhh" rubing sound from the back end I haven't been able to figure out yet, but that can come later. The important part is Kali...

Interesting observation/update. The spousal unit has been rather obsessed with figuring out how exactly Kali broke her tail bone. The initial theory that she hit the road didn't hold water, as the butt of the jeans Kali was wearing bear no road rash at all on the butt.

Looking at things closer, she got Kali out in the garage and was lining things up, she noticed that even two weeks later (Today's the 2 week mark since the accident) Kali has two distinct bruises on her butt cheek.

She had her sit on the Valk, and those two bruises line up perfectly with the "wings" that the Utopia back rest uses to mount the upper and lower halves together. (Photo stolen from Mark T's site)

Looking at the damage to the bike (On both sides) and piecing things together as best we can the theory is:

Front tire pulled into rut, throwing things off kilter, and guiding the front tire towards the huge pothole at the end of the rut.

Kali was fighting to right the bike and exit the rut, thus the impact being on the side of her butt not the middle.

Bike hits the huge pothole at the end of the rut, launching the backrest bolts into her tail bone and breaking it, and sending her off the bike as the bike goes down on the right.

Gyroscopic precession kicks in snapping the bike even more violently over onto the left side (There IS damage on the right, but the damage on the left is more extensive.)

Luckily, even with the broken tail bone Kali had been flung away from the bike before this side to side flopping happened.

All just theory, but it lines up and makes sense.

Not poopooing Utopia back rests, I still intend to keep mine, just an interesting observation as to what appears to have happened.

How's Kali Doing ? When is her report date ?

She theoretically ships off to basic July 19th, but realistically, at this point I don't think that's going to be her ship date. Today's the 2 week anniversary of the accident, and she's mostly getting around and doing things okay, but still somewhat mobility limited. Really don't want her to go into boot camp until she's fully healed AND had a little time to work her PT back to acceptable levels...

...but she's surprised me before so we'll see....

If she isn't cleared by her Dr, she should let her recruiter know and get his words on that. otherwise, if she is up to it, She should have the tailbone healed at the least before she goes.

Small update - She talked to the Army, and supposedly (Not 100% convinced this isn't just the recruiter blowing smoke up her broken butt, but....) once you're signed in, if she delays for any reason she forfeits her rather sizeable signing bonus, so she's planning on going in on the 19th and just toughing it out.

"But what if I fall and re-break it and need a medical delay after I'm at basic?"

"Then you're on medical delay with your bonus money (Part of it at least) in your account."

She still has 2.5 weeks to heal before shipping to basic, and evidently there's a 2 week "Sit in your room and do nothing" quarantine for all incoming recruits right now because of COVID, so she'll have around 4.5 weeks from today, 6.5 weeks post injury to heal up before basic begins in earnest.

Signing bonus ? Things sure have changed in 45 years.  Wink From what I heard the Air Force boot camp is even easier than Navy boot camp. I have no real idea if that’s true. But, if it’s anything like mine was she should be fine. Lots of running, marching, push-ups. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see her at the top of her squad.  cooldude

She's joining the Army; not the Air Force.  Army boot camp is usually a little more stringent than is the Navy's.

The signing bonus is largely because she is a much sought after resource.

For sure  !  Sounds like she did really well on her ASVABs,  and she is really smart, with an ear for languages. All of that is prime recruit, especially for the Army.

Yes.  If the recruiter is being straight on keeping the bonus, she should go.  Once there, she's fulfilled her end of the contract.  She should then tell the truth if she gets any kind of medical exam, review or questions.  She's not asking for (any) special treatment, but she is telling them what happened, and that she's still sore (if she is).  She tried to tell the Army earlier (to save anyone any trouble), but her bonus was threatened, so she came.  It would be good if she was carrying some medical records to confirm the injury/treatment (this isn't whining, it's truth).  Records are better than bills, but bills are better than nothing.  She should have her recruiter's name and contact info with her (he said, she said).

If they were to give her an exam and delay her start, she's still done her side of the bargain.

If not and she starts and gets reinjured, she's still done her side of the bargain, and should then be treated like any other training injury.

Some training injuries can be disqualifying (obviously) and I suppose they could try to get a bonus back, and I have no idea if there is any appeal from a disqualifying determination, but if that happened, ask to speak with a judge advocate and appeal (if possible, and if she wants to).  That should not happen.

I'm no doctor, but when I had low back problems, sitting in a 100+ degree hot tub with the jets blowing bubbly water on my sore spots did more for me than any (and all) other remedies.

That bromine/chlorine will dry you out to itchiness though.  Wash off, grease up.

(I've had my Jacuzzi 4-man decommissioned on my deck for 10 years, and free to a good home.)

If medical records are hard to come by, a thumb drive with pictures (dates) would be good too.  Or an accident report.

I cannot imagine they would try to medical her out on this injury.

I can't either, at worst her school scheduling might slip. If the injury would impair her ability to serve - that might be different, but this is just a minor bump in the road. All Kali needs to do is have her docs ready, show up on time, and do what her current doctor tells her what to do to recover completely. Hopefully, she will be healed enough to start boot camp on time, and this won't be a problem.

Jess, if I had a way to get the Jacuzzi here, maybe ....

Anyone can have it, but I'm not shipping or delivering.

Two (fit) guys can lift and move it, around from back to front to truck.

It's winterized, with new burners, the folding insulated cover is in bad shape from weather but works (I keep it all covered with a tarp).  And a few feet of lap cedar on the controls side fell off (one piece of plywood would cover).

Insurance adjuster came and looked at the bike, asked lots of questions, took lots of pics. I gave her an itemized list of what I knew was broken, part numbers, prices and sources.

Kinda caught me off guard, she wanted a list of every single after market anything I'd put on the bike, and price, damaged or not.

I told her to get ready, we're gonna be here a while, but she was cataloging every little thing I'd done to the bike in the past 20 years.

So now we wait to see what they offer. I did explain I'll do the work myself, and want to avoid totaling it at all costs if possible.

We had Kali come out and watch, interacting with the adjuster is an important part of adulting. (Kali has repeatedly said she's had her one year trial of adulting and isn't happy, she'd like to return it and go back to child'ing now please!)

MC insurance adjuster is a she?  That's different.

Once you're an adult, you have to stay one.... until you get old enough to be a child again.  Almost there.   Grin
