I will add some pictures tomorrow.  I am going to use Thompson's Water Seal on my deck.  Partial replacement has already been done.

I purchased 15 or so 2" x 6" x 16' pressure treated boards early last year and have been letting them sit (out of the rain) to allow the treatment to dry out.  We shall see if my process was worth it.

Mine are all fastened with #10 (I think) 3" wood screws.  These screws are "reportedly" designed for treated wood.  However, over 10 years or so, they do "rust" and the majority break off when I try to extract them.

I changed to using stainless steel screws.  Again, we shall see (I hope  Smiley )

Yeah  my deck/porch is  all nails ! It  was  here  when we  moved  here..
We  had use  screws  here  and  there..
I  have  stained  mine  2  x  now  with Thompsons, the  first time  was  great ..
The  2nd  time  what a  nasty bloody mess..
It was  to be  semi transparent like  the first one  same colour..
NOPE it was  like  paint and  not the redwood  that the label  said ! The  2  Gals   must had  the wrong label on them..  And  peeled  2  yrs. later  Thompsons  said yeah that happens..
I'll NEVER use  them ever  again..

Good Luck...

I have not used them before.  I purchased the gallon can and did five or six boards under the porch roof to see what happened.  The only issue was they wood did darken so..... there is that.

I appreciate your information though.  Sometimes you never know until you try it yourself.

Thompson's isn't the best, but it's good.

Many spray Thompson's on their decks/fences with a pump sprayer (it's pretty watery).

But there is no substitute for a good quality 4" brush (and the work using it) for best penetration and lasting finish on any wood, including pressure treat.  Now a good time (and arm & shoulder) saver is to spray (Thompson's) on a section at a time, and then go over and back-brush each sprayed section in.

And it's a good practice to let new pressure treat dry out before building with it.

Also, when decking, you want to look at the end grain of each board before attaching, and put the arched curvy grain facing up so water runs off better.  If you put the arched grain facing down, the boards slightly cup, and hold water longer.

Working when there's no wind to keep debris and tree crud off the wet stain is also a good plan.

I don't love painting, but it put me through 9 yrs of school.   (steel mills, not decks)  Smiley

And BTW, I mentioned screws in my earlier post.  Wrong.   I used 4" twist nails building my deck, and they are a royal PITA to pull out (with very small heads).  Need crowbars, not framing hammers.  Thus my plywood repair.  And all of my 2 X 6 deck boards that are damaged, are only damaged for 6 inches to 3 feet, leaving a lot of good board to throw away (and destroy if I pull all the nails) if I used all new boards.

Today's project was replacing all of my kitchen cabinet hardware.  16 pulls and 24 hinges.  Along with some wood repair, sanding and staining bad spots.  Those solid cherry cabinets are decades old original equipment and ought to all be pulled out and refinished.  Screw that!!!!

My motto on home repairs is:  Keep the lights low, and everything looks fine.   Grin

My tip for  the day...
Do not  try being creative  at 3 am...
You will only have  to start over  from scratch.

Maybe  when we were  younger  that worked out ok ..
Not now..  3am is  best for  watching TV ..Or play on the  puter..

I got  the  caulking  done, I  might hit it once  more  tomorrow..
Just to make  sure  it's  good  and caulked ...
It's pretty dry in there. So that made  me  happy.
I did  a  Mod  to the  tooth brush  cup holder..
I  had  mounted it yesterday ,and  this  morning  I  had this  idea..
SO I  had to work out the  mods   while  it as  mounted..
Fun Fun fun.. Mut it worked out OK..

I'll Button every thing up tomorrow.. SO glad  it  just about done!
The  sink base  doors  came  out well as  did  the  flat black handles.
I  had  run them on a  wire wheel ,they were  shiny,
but didn't  like  the  looks  so I  had a  rattle  can of  flat black paint !

I  happy  how  it's  coming together. smitten

Mod to the tooth brush cup holder.

All my life (as far back as I can remember) I bend over and rinse or drink right from the tap.  (Though I suppose I couldn't reach it at it at 3.)

It is easier with the taller faucets I have now.

The guys I shared a dorm room with used a cup.  But it only got washed once every other month (so the tap was a safer bet).  Grin

And  done  !  I only 2nd  caulk the  bottom tracks of the  slider doors.

I was happy with everything  else.

When ya  first walk in..

Close  the  door.

left side  of  door

the  wall

sink base  redone.

the  tumbler/toothbrush/ scissors holder.
I  have  always  used  a  tumbler.. HB/Don   never  did..

My last minute  thought to stop the pooling under  tumbler

What I  do with mod podge

This  is  what Don  called Tracy's  touch .

Anyone  who has  been here  knows  any room that has been painted  by me  gets  this  done ,

And  a  different touch..  NO 2  rooms  are  alike.

hair dryer  no longer  sets  on the  butt

This  was something   to fabricate..

I set it  up , only to realize  I  needed  to put in a  hole  for  the  set screw..

At least I  could  use the  F*cked up piece  from the  3 am mess up..

That belonged  to the  tumbler.. Of  course  I  did  a  good  deal of  trimming.

All in all it  looks  a  hell of  a lot better  than it  did !

I'm happy. And I  like  my Humming birds..

Yeah I do kind of primitive , but it works.

Tracy, I also enjoy interesting things in and about my house.

Principally handmade Turkish oriental and other old style carpets (wool on silk and wool on cotton) and kilims laid over the old beige wall to wall crap and on most tables and some walls throughout the house.  Hand hammered and etched copper and brass charger plates, antique copper (and tin lined) cook wear that still works perfectly hung on kitchen wall, handmade brass animals, painted pottery, and walls and stairwells of family and other photos and mementos going back nearly 100 years.  Militaria from my time in service.  A few old collector firearms from 1888 forward.  And 7-800 books.  I've been told it looks like a museum, but it's what I like.  I prefer to be outdoors, but when indoors it may as well be interesting.

Sorry, no pictures.

This is a Turkish 'Hereke' silk on wool carpet.  The knots are tiny and tight and each is hand pulled.  It might take one person several years to make just one.  I have one quite similar and the style is called Seven Mountain Wildflowers.  I spent nearly all my captain's pay on these during two tours (and one wedding).  (no shoes allowed in my house)

Great looking butt in your bathroom   Grin

My pastor gave this to me when he came back from Africa on a trip. Its about 6 inches tall and I hang it on the wall with the other pictures. It has special memories for me and one of those things that I wont give up.

Great job on the bathroom.  cooldude

Is that a silver tumbler you have in the bathroom you made the rack for? Pretty fancy work there.

Just also wanted to say how very very sorry I am for your loss. It is hard when we have a relationship that someone becomes our other half in life to have it taken from us. There are not many so blessed to find this type of relationship. I celebrate that I had that once in my life. Mine was gone in one day along with the possessions in life built up in that relationship. I don't know if its better like you to have this to hold on to or like me gone with the wind. I hear you and can relate in what I went through, it brings back memories, I can only say it took time for me to heal but we never forget.

I really admire your projects that you are doing, along with downsizing its alot to cope with.
Bless you, you have a strong will and spirit and I will keep you in my prayers.

Absolutely correct Mike, but I like to keep them nice and clean anyway (they cost a small fortune all together, even 30+ years ago)

Local stores and merchants used to scrub their store throw carpets out with soap and water then throw them out in the street so cars and trucks would run over them and squeeze the water out (not kidding, saw it multiple times).

I have one that is on a wall that is probably 80-120 years old.  A pure silk that is a bit threadbare in spots, and it isn't even exactly square.  Turkey has (had) an antiquity law when I was there (making it illegal to export any antiquity of 100 years old) and my friend the carpet salesman said "they can't prove how old it is, but just to be safe, when you ship/pack out, roll it up inside another carpet.  So I did.  We got our outbound shipments inspected, by Turks.

Rugs you buy at Walmart;  these are called carpets.   Grin

I also have an old samovar (tea maker) that is likely from the late 1800s.

Not mine, but exactly like mine.  Bronze (mostly copper and some tin)
