Need some Ides to start up a support group for all those people tempted to put car tires on

thier motorcycles.

You can call it common sense or something like that.

I Will be forever known as Al supporter of all that would not be drawn to the Dark Ages , Or Dark Side

what ever they call it.

I wonder if your insurance would be cancelled for installing non compliant or code breaking

equipment on a motorcycle.

Insurance companies love to deny claims for one reason or another, this could be huge.

Not many places will install a car tire on a motorcycle rim, risk losing thier insurance at the business.

Big Al , Helper to all that are tempted to the Dark Side just to save a buck.

I am having fun with this idea, please don't be offendeed.

You should have been here 10 or 11 years ago when this was a topic of interest. Folks have logged hundreds of thousands of miles on the DarkSide nothing you say will change that.Truth is this has been beat to death here and the numbers keep growing. It's my bike I'll mount what I want on it just like you will do on your bike.....Ride On   cooldude

While I wasn't quite as public with my derision, I too used to privately laugh at those freaking idiots that were putting car tires on their bikes... Don't they know that can't work???

Years went by... I kept shelling out the higher and higher prices for the motorcycle rear tires, and kept noticing more and more people were putting more and more mile son car tires...

...and it wasn't just the bleeding edge crazy folks either that were doing it...

Riders I knew were doing it. Riders I respect were doing it. And riding. A lot.

The reports of flaming death were greatly exaggerated...

Took me a few years to finally come around, but I have no intention of ever going back to an overpriced low mileage lower traction motorcycle tire on the Valk!

...now if I could only find a car tire that'd fit the spousal unit's ST1300...

I'm over the subject,
I spent two years researching before I converted. I get folks asking me all the time about it, the intelligent ones (you can tell) I will share with and give some information and resources for their own research.
Then on the other hand, some seem to want to pick a C/T fight, it never works out well. Kind of like trying to convert a Muslim to Christianity or visa versa. Now I rarely respond at all, If their negative I'll just respond, "It ain't for everybody" some just can't handle it.

The last series of ride pics I posted was at "Sleepy Hollow". A famous Florida Motorcycle gathering spot in the woods. While there I heard two guys standing right next to me talking about my C/T. "What a fool", "dangerous", "what kind of idiot would do that"? I didn't even enter the conversation, just gets my blood boiling. When I was leaving I heard them say, "thats the guy with the C/T, he was standing right next to us" "Do you think he heard us"?  I slid my clutch out and let the CAR TIRE throw a load of mulch in their direction.

well.....i guess i do feel bad about the car tire Haters......when i am out riding 4 -5 years on the same  tire, they would be sitting it the garage pulling their bags and running around town or waiting on the UPS truck to bring rear tire # 3-4-5 or how ever many cheap a$$ MC tires that wont hold up to the weight and power of the Valk, So if i am guilty of anything safety wise.....that would be 'Not' constantly checking the Car tire to see if CORDS are showing AGAIN LOL!!!!!! I was a long time, (silent) believer that a "car tire can't be better than a MC tire".  In my opinion I was right.  they are not better.  Frankly, I can't tell the difference.  It's all about the sweet spot in the air pressure in my opinion.  Mine is 32 psi alone, and 36 psi with my SO.  Seriously, I canot tell the difference between the CT and the old Metzler 880.  It cost me $105 instead of $400.  And it'll last longer, I hope.

You know what finally convinced me?  Smokin' Joe.  I could not HOPE to keep up with that guy in the twisties, when he's on a valk with a CT and I am on my valk with a MCT.  That and his testimony that he's crashed 2 times with a CT on the bike, and BOTH times it was the FRONT tire that let go.  And some videos from under a Valk showing how the CT flexes in the corners... and maintains a nce contact patch.  I have been peg-dragging both 1 and 2 up on the CT and feel pretty good about it.  And the stopping power from the rear tire is noticibly better too.

Just wondering where you buy your mc tires. At 400.00 a tire I think they saw you coming.

$400 (Including labor) is what I paid for my last motorcycle tire, and what finally convinced me to go to the Dark Side...

I knew it was high way robbery, but I was in the middle of a trip into the middle of no where in West Texas, they were the only bike shop in several hundred miles that had the tire I needed, and THEY knew it, and I'd just limped the Valk in stopping every 20 miles to air the quickly deflating rear tire back up to get me there...

There are times you can shop around for a better deal, and times you're happy to be robbed just for the opportunity to get back on the road...

Every bdy has there favs. but this tthing of a motorcycle tire on a motorcycel is a one up's manship that will go on forever.

Wow he is running a Car tire and it gets peope; talking , Conversation piece I guess.

But with the spline touble on the Valk , I can't help but think that it would put more stress on the rear diff, and cause thefront tire to push in the corners.

Just for the record, Al, a few rides on a car tired Valk don't give ant credence to your rather wild speculations.   Grin

As an aside, friend, I'm trying to give you a lot of latitude based upon my belief of your hurdles to be overcome, but the use of the term "jap bike" on this forum is likely to get that latitude significantly reduced.

If I were to take a long, straight ride for a few thousand miles, I’d seriously would want a CT.  Simply because they'll easily outlast a cycle tire and you're not going to be doing a lot of twisties.

I’m not experienced with a CT at all, but I really don't think I would need a support group to tell me not to do it.  Usually support groups are for druggies that don't want to do drugs anymore but can't find the strength to say no to the appeal of drugs.

So if I understand you correctly, having a CT is extremely exhilarating, and is bad for you?  That’s why you want to start a support group!  You’ve ridden a cycle with a CT and you can’t say no to the drug!!

Wow.  It all makes sense to me now.

Just say no to cars, they have four!  One CT is enough!

Now if I could only remember where I put my meth?

OK I'll use the word Metric bike if that will not offend anybody then good for all.

No disrespect was meant to any one.

Car tires can be had cheaper.

But just like a helmet, the salesman will ask you If you have a fifty dollar head, get a fifty dollar helmet.

If your ARSE is worth about anywhere from 105 to 150 dollars then run the cheaper tire.

I'm just saying.

I am a good speller but a bad typist.

Pretty weather here and getting niceer by the minute.

No offence meant to anyonw.

I am a Libertarian.  I think people should be able to do what they want.

I wanted a car tire.

Someone that doesn't want one... is allowed to NOT have one.

Just like guns... I want 'em, but I don't think someone else should HAVE to have 'em.  Just leave MINE alone.

Hell, I'll ride with ANYONE.  I did a couple hundred miles over the weekend with a Sabre, a Bandit and a Busa.  One of them even had rainbow stickers on it.

I would guess that better than 99% of motorcycles with differentials have TWO car tires on the back.  A car tire might put more weight on the left bearing while leaning left, and the right bearing while leaning right, and might put a little more torsional stress on the swing arm, but I can't think of any reason why it would put more stress on the final drive.  Well...maybe the extra traction will put more stress on the entire drive train!

I dont see how it puts more weight on either bearing vs a mc tire. I have more room tween the swingarm to the tire now then when I had my Metz. They are very close in the same diameter, down to a mm or 2, imho. The contact patch on the 200 metz was 3 1/2" and my CT is 4 1/2".
