Sunshine today and forecast for the rest of the week.  cooldude So of course on my way home tonight from work the Valk makes the caluchunk sound in third gear as I leave work.   ??? I thought I had run over a truckers ratchet strap at first, but it did it again when I decelerated further up the road. babied it home and though it is not as severe, it does clunk every time I decelerate and to a lesser extent when accelerating. Either way I will no doubt miss this fine stretch of weather. tickedoff  Anyone had something like this happen? What ja find?

Most likely, the u-joint.

Work the problem from the rear forward; have to, to get the u-joint free anyway.

Pull the rear wheel, check all the splines there, drive shaft and then the u-joint.

Doubt it is the transmission.

Yea I know what it is most likely. I went through the splines last tire change, and they looked great. Replaced all O rings and dust cover. More of a vent than anything. Kills me not to be able to ride this week.  Cry  Found a U joint on Ebay for under a hundred. Will see If my son can trailer it to his shop tomorrow.

+1 I also doubt it's your transmission. Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Check the pinion cup and drive shaft when you install the u joint. Both were bad on mine.  Hoser  Shocked

I just recently bought a new u-joint for mine, $137.71. www.hondapartshouse.com Rather pay a little more and know that I have a good one.

Thanks for the link. I am definitely going new. The only one I found on Ebay was $80 and I didn't like the look of it. My day off is tomorrow, so I will start taking thing apart and we will see what has really happened.

well shortly i'll be pulling the rear and do my exam, relube, etc.  the drive shaft and pinion, did we ever get anywhere with that?  concerned if i put too much moly, it will plug something or not enuf moly and it will wear the spline?

I have typically used the honda moly on everything in the rear gear cluster, but i have read of various witches brews there that folks put together.  is that used everywhere, even in the pinion?  ujoint,  etc?

best concoction?

Never buy a used one.

I have one of the rebuildable ones from Free Pass in California.  Here's the info on it http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,30570.0.html

Well the good news is my u joint looks new, like it was replaced shortly before I got the bike. The pinion cup and drive shaft on the other hand are toast! The seal on the cup had a 1/2 inch torn back letting in the elements, and the grease out. There was so little left of the splines i'm surprised the bike would move. I'm wondering if it was damaged by whoever changed out the U joint. wish I had gone further than just O rings and rear spline lube when I changed my first set of tires. Oh well live and learn, time to start shopping.

BTY, There are lots of variants of the GL1500 on the parts page. What is the match for my 1999 standard? Or are all the parts the same for that area of the bike?

My Tourer is GL1500CT I believe the Standard is GL1500C  and the Interstate is the GL1500SE.

Ok parts on order. $127.92 with UPS ground. Spent the extra money and got a new spring and clip, just to be on the safe side.  should have everything by the 28th. Pics to come.

Finally got my bike back together last weekend.  cooldude Before the breakdown I had noticed a drop in fuel economy, and with the new cup and shaft I should see that improve. Acceleration feels smooth and near effortless.  Smiley

This is a shot you have all seen too often.

Looks like someone dropped the shaft when replacing U joint to me. Don't see how the chunk could have been torn back in normal use.

Tearing her down went quick. It is the EZ part.  Roll Eyes

All the new stuff lubed up and ready to slip in. My son's roommate is rebuilding an engine right now and the shop is a mess as you can see.

Back together ( and needing a bath) with new to me original unmolested exhaust. Cant see it in this shot. The only thing I can say is a negative is I do hear more engine nose now.  Roll Eyes

Took this on on the way home to show off the new exhaust.

So, down about two and a half weeks, and now I'm back to flying @ ground level.  coolsmiley
Would never have attempted any of the maintenance or this repair without the support of this community!  cooldude

Thanks again! See ya on the road!

I also can't help but ask. Hi neighbor, where is that place in the picture?

I'm looking at riding the Okanagan valley from one end to the other sometime in the next couple of years. Next years ride is a 5 day loop ride of the lower half of BC, up the Ice Parkway from Banff to Jasper.

Not to steal your thread but any recommendations on riding these parts of BC would be most welcome. I love Canada, particularly Alberta and British Columbia.  Smiley

This was day three on the last ride I took on my old shadow. The one that finally pushed me over the edge and got me to move up to my Valk.

Day one was HWY 410 east from Bonney Lake to Yakima then State route 12 to Lewiston idaho.

Then Day two was lolo pass and the 93 south to Salmon Idaho.

http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p585/FreightTrainFloyd/P6250182.jpg

The shot I posted was HWY 75 coming into Stanley Idaho, at the foot of the Sawtooth MT,

This is what was left of the salmon river in the first shot. It completely disappears into a valley at the base of the Sawtooth.

Hope to make the ride on the Valk this next summer.  cooldude

Congrats on getting the bike back to 100%.  Beautiful country out there.  I hope to see it in person some day.

I usually don't post or read the general section, but will post a threat there for you and Thespian, since this isn't Tech related.

As much as I love riding through the Ozarks those photos take my breath away. I'll have to have that on my bucket list for sure.

Hey Skinhead, I'm not sure what part of the country you are in but maybe we should plan sometime to head out from our respective hometowns and meet up for a ride through that scenery. It would definitely be a great first ride together, I think.
