Tucson - Its a dry heat

« on: April 03, 2015, 07:14:04 PM »

Looking at getting some new rotors, and I'm vacillating between stockers or EBC.

Stockers are about $175 each.  And they generally remain good looking (non-rusting) throughout their life.

EBC's are about $250 each, some allude they provide better stopping power, but after a bit of use, or sitting un-used for awhile, they start to rust up.

At least this has been my experience on my GL1200's.  When I switched to EBC, I did not see much braking difference, if any.  But now I continually fight rust.

Unless anybody has a solution, or ???, I'm inclined to forego the possible better braking and not have to deal with the rust.

Anybody else seen this?  Solved this?

I put EBC rotors and pads on MGM when one of my stock rotors warped.

I have yet to have a rust problem.

This was 12 years ago and they look like new and stop ya on a dime.

Would I do it again, yupper, in a heart beat.

I think I'm going with these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-Set-Brake-Discs-Rotors-Honda-GL-1500-Valkyrie-C-Interstate-Tourer-CT-SC34-/271825137205?hash=item3f4a0a6e35&vxp=mtr
Yeah, yeah, I know they are probably cheap Chinese crap, but it hasn't seemed to be a cost thing as I've worn out OEM and EBC rotors already. Admittedly, I tend to be hard on rotors the speeds and braking I do.

Just based on recollection of earlier posts... I seem to recall reading wing rotors fit valk (but what wing I don't know), though thinner, they have the same duration/longevity rating as valk rotors, and supposedly were cheaper.  At one time they were much cheaper than valk rotors (I had heard valk rotors price went down a while ago, maybe they are back up).

Also, if you run EBC rotors, you want EBC pads, not Honda pads (OE rotors should have OE pads): though EBC apparently makes a number of pad material choices (so perhaps that advice is dated).

ProCaliber has the valk front rotors for $158.30 (but I always look up parts for my '99 interstates, I'm not sure if '97 stds have different front rotors... or what your bike is).

Well those rotors on eBay that you have linked here are actually IN China.  buying stuff on eBay right out of China is something I really don't want to do, not least because it takes like a month to get here Cheesy

What I recall reading is that OE pads may be used up faster than EBC (sintered metal) pads, not that OE pads will not stop the bike just fine on EBC rotors.  Again, this is based on reading, not experience.

Last time I ebay ordered something for the Valk that was listed as being in China, I ordered on Sunday and it was at my door on Friday.

GL 1800 wing rotors are a direct fit. OEM are 4.5mm thick and wing rotors are 4.0mm but I've had no problems with them.

People who are interested in Wing rotors need a year of donor bike or a part #.

Not interested myself as I'm running EBC rotors and pads.

Well you can't beat that even by some US-based eBayers.  Actually the thing I bought in China probably took 20-25 days to get to me so it's kind of a crapshoot, and I also live on the West Coast.

Figured I'd post some pics so folks can see the magnitude of this - at least here around Tucson:

Stock rotor on my GL1200 hack - maybe 40k on the rotor.  Have gone thru three sets of EBC HH pads.

EBC rotor on GL1200 solo - close to 30k on the rotor.  My second set of EBC HH pads.

Note that these bikes have been sitting under a porch since end of last summer. Blew a head gasket on the hack, and am going to just transplant a new-ish engine, have been struggling to fit a set of Motad SS exhausts on the solo; typical coarse Brit workmanship... but I digress...

I would assume that more regular use would lessen the rusting of the steel EBC's.  But as can be seen, the stock ss rotors are almost flawless.  Almost have the solo Wing exhaust re-fabbed, so now I need to sand/de-rust my rotors before I can to a test ride...  Sad

All GL 1800 wings will fit from 2001 till todays new ones.

The following front rotors fit
Honda CBR 600 F4 (99-00) and CBR 900RR (92-93), the CBR 600 F4i do not fit.
VFR800 FI (98-01)
VFR800   (02-05)

some nice low mileage ones can be found on Ebay.

The valkyrie rotors are thicker from the factory than all the others.
Vesrah and Ferodo IMO best pads to use if not using OEM (Vesrah makes most OEM pads) are available in a thicker pad for longer life.

I installed some rotors this winter from "sixty motorsports". Don't have many miles on them but they are less expensive than EBC and look great. cooldude

Those do look good.  I guess I could just browse around and find the product description, but are they stainless steel or carbon steel, and how is the stopping – do the pads grip good on them?

I would think that the best and easiest thing is the 1800 wing rotors
 and stock pads.
They worked great in the IS that helped convert to a trike.

I went with sixtys ceramic brake pads too, a little less responsive than the sintered pads I replaced but not as harsh on the rotors and they are a bit quieter. If you read their write ups on pads and rotors they are very informative.
