After calling my local dealer, and being told a new alternator would run $700 just for parts, I decided I would look elsewhere. Just wondering what brand you guys would recommend
Thanks

It may be better to get a local shop to quote/do a rebuild.  I have had great experience with an alternator/starter shop in my city, try to find one if you can.

I have one of these in my spare parts bin

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-VALKYRIE-ALTERNATOR-FITS-31100-MZ0-005-31100-MZ0-015-31100MZ0005-31100MZ0015/322545712189?hash=item4b1938fc3d:g:fkgAAOSwlMFZN2wF&vxp=mtr

I learned about them on this board over the years but have not had to install it yet.

I would pull it apart and see if it were something like a bad brush or something a motor shop could fix before buying a new one.

I had a Compufire 90 amp Alternator on a 1998 Goldwing 1500. Would that work on our Valkyries?

You would have to take the mounting face off and turn it then bolt it back to alt and yes it will fit.

Might be just worn brushes. Or dust build up from the brushes. " $700 just for parts," is a bad way to start off a relationship with the dealership. Oem new is $475 including shipping.

took my alt apart last yr at 52000 miles.  brushes were well within spec, easily good for another 50k. rear bearing was a little rough. replaced it with a better one from Napa.

Other than asking which one to buy, you haven't actually said why you need one?

Test and repair yours. Winding gone, buy another, brushes warn, replace.

There are a lot of posts, here's one, on the subject.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,93492.0.html

Mine was stuck brushes. No output voltage from the alt (tested at the battery). Just to be safe, I've bought spare brushes.

I reposted this from the other alternator thread:
Last August I was 25 miles down the road from home heading on a holiday to Whidby Island WA when my guages went out. Not long after the bike started to surge. I knew what was going on right away and confirmed it when I pulled over. The alternator went out with 59K miles. I phoned around to various starter/alternator rebuild shops and couldn't get a straight answer from any of them. One last call and the guy just simply said "bring it in, I'll fix it for you"...I knew this was the guy!!
I got it back 2 days later with the stator rewound and new bearings installed. The guy said that the wire on the stator windings was too thin, and the reason the alternator failed. He sent me out the door with a 1 year warranty...175 bucks later...damn good deal I thought. My local Honda dealer wanted $850!!
I looked at buying an after market replacement but a large number comments on pretty much every site complained about early failures on every one of these pieces of crap. I think I made the right choice by having the OEM Hitachi rebuilt.

it is a hitachi just like the OEM one. I also rebuilt my old one so i have a spare sitting around.

Whatever you do, *avoid* alternators from a company called 'LActrical'.

I bought one and it started leaking oil through the seal after just 60 miles.

I fitted one of these
https://www.ebay.com.au/i/322545712189?chn=ps
Removed the drive nut and re-loctited it, read somewhere that the odd one has come loose.
Only issue I had was the large O ring may have been a touch off size as it snagged and tore when installing. Lovely oil leak. Refitted the Honda one  off the old unit and no leaks. Been on about 8 months.
Cheers Steve

Mine did that too. They sent the wrong size o-ring so I got one that matched the old one and it works fine now. But mine was not LActrical.

Go here and look at the alternator part #.  Order one and take the 3 small, but long bolts out, rotate the housing to match yours, reinstall the 3 bolts and reinstall the alternator.  It is the one for the 1500 Wing and works just like intended.  I don't know why the one for the Valkyrie is so expensive....

I put one of the LActrical alternators on mine at the end of last year, had a big ride coming up and it was the fastest option. It has been fine for over 1,000 miles but now Im considering having my stock one rebuilt and putting it back on. Heard some success stories and some horror stories about them.

I wouldn't worry. I've got 45k on one now.

I had an LAlectrical one that didn't make 500 miles before failing. Local rebuild shop said the stator was bad and rebuilt it for me.

You would have to take the mounting face off and turn it then bolt it back to alt and yes it will fit.

If you are talking about the 1325w (90amp) Compufire I didn't need to re-clock mine.  I did however, have to cut metal off the rear edge of the engine casing and the front of the frame at the swingarm mount. That cuts into the seat of the O-ring so you need to augment the seal or oil will leak and saturate the alternator. Also you need to put in a bigger battery - GW size which requires Dremelling the battery box and aligning it fore-aft - and double the size of the dogbone fuse.  I think after all this and replacing the battery periodically it's better to find another hi-power alternator that fits or just manage your power use better. eg., there are LED solns for lighting now, and sound systems both with less power demands.  Don't use the compressor for horn blowing in parades. Heated clothing is not much problem as it doesn't draw at full power all the time.  Typically uses diigital cycling with a controller. I've found that Jade's OEM alternator keeps up very well with better power management.  And I'm running a 130/90 headlight and 2 std H4's for fwd lights.  Rarely use heated clothing, fuel pump 9 minutes per belly tank use (which generally is only on road trips), Dan-Marc, lots of extra lighting in the back & front but it's LED, power for phone, GPS, radar, and trailer brakes which are miniscule, WOLO air horn but it's a vane pump that only runs while blowing it, 300w amp with Crossover/preamp but they are digital, don't use high power unless high volume.

My Compufire install at http://www.horseapple.com/Valkyrie/Tech_Tips/Compufire/compufire.html
