I rode a MC in VA once, so it's MC related  angel

WASHINGTON (AP) White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was booted from a Virginia restaurant because she works for President Donald Trump, the latest administration official to experience a brusque reception in a public setting.

Sanders tweeted that she was told by the owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia, that she had to "leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left." She said the episode Friday evening said far more about the owner of the restaurant than it did about her.

"I always do my best to treat people, including those I disagree with, respectfully and will continue to do so," Sanders said in the tweet from her official account, which generated 22,000 replies in about an hour.

The restaurant's co-owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post that her staff had called her to report Sanders was in the restaurant. She cited several reasons, including the concerns of several restaurant employees who were gay and knew Sanders had defended Trump's desire to bar transgender people from the military.

"Tell me what you want me to do. I can ask her to leave," Wilkinson told her staff, she said. "They said yes."

Wilkinson said that she talked to Sanders privately and that Sanders's response was immediate: "That's fine. I'll go."

Employees at the restaurant told The Associated Press that Wilkinson wasn't available for further comment.

Lexington, located in the Shenandoah Valley and a three-hour drive from the nation's capital, is politically a spot of blue in a sea of red. It sided with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, by a 2-1 margin. It's the county seat of Rockbridge County, which went with Trump by a similar margin. And it is home to Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University.

Sanders' treatment at the restaurant created a social media commotion with people on both sides weighing in, including her father, Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate.

"Bigotry. On the menu at Red Hen Restaurant in Lexington VA. Or you can ask for the 'Hate Plate,'" Huckabee said in a tweet, quickly generating 2,000 replies in about 30 minutes. "And appetizers are 'small plates for small minds.'"

On Yelp, a responder from Los Angeles wrote: "Don't eat here if you're a Republican, wearing a MAGA hat or a patriot."

But many were also supportive of the restaurant owner's actions.

"12/10 would recommend. Bonus: this place is run by management who stuck up for their beliefs and who are true Americans. THANK YOU!!!!" said a comment from Commerce City, Colorado.

Tom Lomax, a local business owner, brought flowers to the restaurant Saturday afternoon as a show of support. He called Wilkinson a "force of nature" and "one of the biggest drivers of the downtown."

"We support our own here, great little community we have," he said.

Brian Tayback, of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, and Brandon Hintze, of Alexandria, Virginia, walked by the restaurant during a visit. Tayback said he believes the owner made the right decision.

"They're taking a stand against hate," Tayback said.

Dave Kurtz, who lives near the Red Hen, came to the restaurant wearing a T-shirt supporting the president that says: "Get on board or get run over."

"I want to see why they would do that," Kurtz said, adding he had planned to eat at the restaurant but doubts he will now. "She's a paying customer. She's just coming in here to have dinner."

The separation of families trying to enter the U.S. at the southern border has intensified political differences and passions that were already at elevated levels during the Trump presidency.

Earlier in the week, Trump's Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, cut short a working dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Washington after protesters shouted, "Shame!" until she left. A few days earlier, Trump aide Stephen Miller, a key adviser on immigration, was accosted by someone at a different Mexican restaurant in the city, who called him "a fascist," according to the New York Post.

The Trumps don't get out a lot socially in Washington and Trump often dines at BLT Prime in the Trump International Hotel or at Trump properties elsewhere when he does go out. He's talked about getting out more, but some have questioned whether he would be welcome at some establishments in the city.

Ari Fleischer, who was a press secretary for President George W. Bush, tweeted Saturday: "I guess we're heading into an America with Democrat-only restaurants, which will lead to Republican-only restaurants. Do the fools who threw Sarah out, and the people who cheer them on, really want us to be that kind of country?"

It appears to be a true story.

So its ok to refuse service to staff of the White House.

What is next?

How about ten thousand zero star reviews on yelp and trip adviser for the restaurant?

were there ANY restaurants who refused to serve the staff of the last administration on such grounds that they disagreed with a transgender policy.   By the way transgender is not necessarily gay as you dont need to have sex to do it, just lose your organs and identify as something else than your birth sex.

Well what I saw on Facebook they now have 9000 one star reviews. If you are going to discriminate against a person for their views you better be prepared for the consequences.....

Pretty sickening and I feel bad for Sanders, she does a great job and handles herself very well, this was undeserved. I would hope that someone would sue them and but Sanders is not gay but maybe they can find grounds.

Agreed, regarding how she handles herself. It's always been a tough job, and the current President and times has to be as trying as we've seen lately. If I had that job, I'd be on heroin or in a rubber room by now, she's one tough cookie. I really hope she doesn't lower herself to the state where she'd sue, however. I'd leave that to the professionally aggrieved segment of the nursery. No judge's ruling is needed to see what happened there. No different than Roseanne being fired and Samantha Bee still being paid millions to be a hateful feckless trumpet. Eff DeNiro and Fonda(s), too, but even they deserve to be able to sit down and order a meal.  Sadly, if this continues I can see BOTH sides riding through the countryside in pointy hoods, torching Chik Fil A's, Red Hen(ish) eateries, and anything else that is "wrong". But that's always been the left's plan because it takes way too long to do it with votes compared to martial law. Hope they know what they're pushing for.

Honestly, I somewhat respect the fact that they stood by their convictions.  Didn't say i agreed with them.   That would also mean I would not eat in their establishment but I respect their right to serve who ever they wish to serve.   That's the way it should be...

This is no different than my choices in who I chose to associate with in my private life.   I don't go visit my liberal neighbors and they don't come visit me.    Yeah, I know it's different for a business.  The point is still valid.

Respectfully, the KKK, antifa and others stand by their convictions, too. I cannot support this kind of behavior, especially after the cake baker couple wasted all those resources trying to push around a private business just to make a point. What next, MAGA-hatted anarchists with baseball bats stopping into the Red Hen for coffee? Or maybe they'll copy the "civilized EU" and just rent or steal a large truck or bus?

I understand your point about the baker but, I chose who I associate with.    Liberals want a different America than I do.   I believe everyone has the right to make their own way and hand outs are something individuals and churches should be doing.   They seem to think the government is "Hand Out Central".   Yeah, I know the rules for a business is different.     Liberals want to spend everyone else's money but seldom put their own up.

Hypocrisy much is a good title to this thread. There was a post a few days ago about a billboard in Texas. Many here were just fine with liberals not being welcome in Texas.  coolsmiley

I see a big difference between a billboard on the side of the road that was meant to be humorous and someone being told to leave a restaurant because of who they work for.

And to be fair, the owner of the billboard did take it down when controversy ensued.

I'm willing to bet that the owner's of the Red Hen will never concede that they may have been wrong and invite Sarah back for a meal.

The wife and I stopped at a local restaurant a couple of years ago that refused to seat us because we arrived on a motorcycle, they didn't have the nerve to come right out and say that but it was pretty obvious to both of us.

That restaurant was on a road heavily travelled by motorcyclists, it is now out of business and for sale.

I can only hope that the Red Hen suffers the same fate.

I think it was stupid of the restaurant to deny service because she is associated with Trump. As for what is defined as humor, well we have diverging opinions on that. I just thought it ironic how some were outraged that Sanders was asked to leave a restaurant but thought it ok for half the country to be asked not to stop while in Texas. (I guess irony and humor have something to do with ones point of view). Taking down a billboard because you are getting blowback is not exactly an act of courage.

A few years ago a friend and I stopped at a winery for lunch. They very passive aggressively made it clear they didn't want bikes.

About a year later the business got sold for peanuts at auction.

As I recall you were amused by the billboard yourself and were looking for it so that you could take a pic of your bike in front of it.

My point is that the two are not Apples to Apples.

Heck they aren't even Apples to Oranges, more like Apples to Mangos or Eggplant (yuch).

Mangoes & eggplant ?  Grin I was amused and wish I could have gotten a pic of the bike by it. My point is the hypocrisy or irony of the people ok with one but not the other. I was not ok with either, but I found Texas to not be representative of that. If I could have gotten a pic my idea was to post it here with some quip about not being able to stop a liberal in Texas.  Smiley Maybe I’m wrong to see the hypocrisy.

How about "White Only" or "Colored Window in Back"? I do realize that's a stretch because color isn't political choice, but where are we willing to draw a line? Personally, I feel one's behavior inside a business should be a benchmark for being tossed out, not one's employment status or vehicle choice prior to walking into a business. I absolutely respect the right to refuse service, and I support the repercussions when abused.

Having said that, I would rather know up front where I am welcome.   I tend to avoide flaming Liberals (they want a totally different America than I do) and I believe they appreciate that.   Wink

My point is the hypocrisy or irony of the people ok with one but not the other.

There is a material difference in someone exercising their 1st amendment rights to express their wish that liberals just keep on moving and someone actually expelling someone from their restaurant.

If the Texas Rangers had been conducting a spot check and if they found any socialist/liberal paraphernalia on board physically escorting the liberal out of The Republic of Texas, then your comparison might have merit.

Maybe I’m wrong to see the hypocrisy.

I don't think that you're wrong to see some hypocrisy, I just don't think that the two rise to the same level is all.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a similar billboard expressing the same sentiment to conservatives or republicans along the highway in California or Massachusetts.

Since, I don't live or intend to live in either one of those states I'd take no offense to it.

I wouldn't say that I'm outraged about how the owners of the restaurant treated Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

I would say that I am disturbed and I will say that I am saddened that it happened in VA.

I am in Lexington at least once a month and most of the time I eat lunch when I am there.

You can bet that the Red Hen will NEVER get any of my business.

Let's put the shoe on the other foot for a moment.

Just down the street from where we ate lunch in Buena Vista is restaurant that is ran and owned by Mennonites.

It's a pretty good restaurant with food that is farm fresh.

Suppose for a minute that I had picked that restaurant to stop at instead of the BBQ joint.

And suppose that for some reason they refused to serve you based on your political views.

Would that have been OK ?

I can tell you that it wouldn't have been ok with me (If it were Baldo maybe, but not you  Evil Evil Evil).

Maybe the Red Hen needs a protest?
Craig

It doesn't need a protest.

It just needs for the people who believe that it was wrong for them to do what they did to not eat there.

Lexington and Rockbridge County are pretty conservative.

If the conservative people of Lexington and Rockbridge County simply take their business elsewhere from now on it won't be long before the Red Hen can no longer keep the lights on.

Relevant to the discussion: https://www.vox.com/2018/6/23/17497742/sarah-sanders-restaurant-red-hen-friday-asked-to-leave-gay-wedding-cake

From the article: "When pressed on whether that included support for signs that deny service to gay people, Sanders responded, “I believe that would include that.”".

And: "Sanders sees a constitutional right under the First Amendment to chose who to serve and not serve in a business. But on Friday, she made no mention of this context. She made no attempt to distinguish the two. Instead, she took an opportunity to fan divisions between the White House’s base and everyone else.".

The difference between political affiliation and sexual orientation (or skin color) is that only one is a choice.

Not sure what parallel universe that was supposed to be relevant in but that was pretty much bogus through and through

no kidding,, What i got out of that is,, its not ok for someone to refuse to sell a cake to Gays,, but its ok to refuse service to a conservative based on their affiliation.  Shocked Shocked Shocked And i happen to see that sexual orientation these days seems to be a choice. That is what we keep hearing about.
