Anyone else struggle with the sun reflecting off the gas cap onto the windshield? Anyone have a simple solution? Most tank bibs do not cover the gas cap itself.  I tried to make and elastic material to cover the cap.....didn't work out too well....What do you think??

I didn't notice until someone else complained, then I too noticed it.  Just don't look at it is what I do now I don't notice it anymore.

I'm with Jeff, I had a cover made back in 2000 due to the cap reflection in my Tourer windscreen.

It fell off one day and I didn't notice, and I didn't notice for a long time, so. Roll Eyes

The problem I had was with a Tourer and the windshield. The windshield would not only reflect the gas tank but magnify it. So when the sun would glare off the cap, it would be magnified and reflected. Swear to God you could see this from space and it probably brought down satellites. It was bad. My solution at the time was to put a small rag under the tank bib till it would cover the cap. Slide it up when I got gas and slide it down when done. This worked well if I remembered to take a small rag with me. Of course it looks a bit strange, but it works and is cheap.

I did consider, and if I still had the Tourer and making long trips I likely would have, painted it flat black or some non-reflective color. I have an Interstate now and no longer have that problem.

I use some black leather dye on the chrome ,it works pretty well,it will rub off a little.

I just freshen it up once a year.

Never noticed a problem before and with my short memory span I'll forget about it before I get back on the fat lady.....

Wait, what were we discussing?

Didn't get mine specifically to combat sun reflection, but because I thought it looked great with my old Iron Horse tank bib.... although it does eliminate the glare  Cool

I painted mine with flat black Rust-oleum. I didn't scuff the chrome so if I want to go back to shiny I will just wipe it off with lacquer thinner. I also painted the tops of the valve covers for the same reason. been on for 5 years still looks good.

I had the Iron Horse tank bib and rigged a map holder to cover the gas cap.

Getting rid of that silly plastic window is the real answer but short of that Clint is your man.

I think it's pretty clear this issue is somewhat related to how tall a rider is and the angle of the shield (interstates aren't really variable, but std/tourers are, esp with all the aftermarket shields).

When this was complained about years ago, I noted that it almost never bothered me (interstates), except if the sun was at just the right angle to my direction.  It could be bad, but rarely.

Also, I am usually in polarized riding glasses (prescription), and this filters out most glare.

If this was a chronic problem for you, making a blue painter's tape patch over the chrome cap might be a good temp solution.  It will come right off with no goop issues.  (I'm only assuming it will stay on).

Or, you could just rub some wax on it, and don't polish it off.  (Oh, the horror   Grin)

Or, if it's always a problem, I'd consider taking it in and getting it powder coated.

I greatly dislike the anodized aluminum bezel around the interstate idiot lights on the dash, and had mine powdercoated (black).  (Warning, that thing is extremely thin and superglued in there, and great care must be taken not to bend it up taking it off.)

It doesn't glare, but it is cheesy (and the clear coat flakes off after 19 years).

Who the hell leaved the gas tank stickers on forever?

The tourer windshield can be tilted back to eliminate the glare. A small strip of metal can be added to the lower shield mount with 2 more bolts added. The holes should be 1" center to center measured. The shield comes back at the top and just touches the speedo tack pods. On the back of the shield, add small patches of Velcro (soft side) to prevent scratching. It's worked on my last two tourers. The tilt also eliminates buffeting.

Honestly, I've never had the experience of the chrome gas cap giving me any reflection issues.   Have had a couple of tank bibs and either give them away or I sold them, can't remember.  I know I donated one to VRCC for the Charity Auction at Morgantown.   Was offered a leather cap cover at the Roanoke InZane but didn't take it.

Not sure why I haven't had the issue, just haven't.    Cool

Thanks for all the replies/suggestions....I was looking for something that did not require the full tank bib....the I/S windshield is not adjustable so I am unable to tilt it back like the tourer. I will  find a solution though, 'cause I know driving with one hand covering the cap is not safe (just kidding) coolsmiley. Anyway, thanks again for the many options listed.

Clint's cap cover doesn't require a bib.

I've noticed that the curve of my Tourer's windshield makes the reflection of the gas cap huge, but I've never seen it as a problem needing solving, perhaps because I've always either used sunglasses, or the Transitions lens of my helmet.
