President is right the democrats are wrong.

President makes a common sense case and proposal.

Democrats are going to demand the government be opened then refuse to negotiate.

I'm starting to see a pattern: Trump creates a problem, blames everyone else and them offers a temporary solution to the problem he created.

Being health care, dreamers losing their status to stay in USA or Trump's government shutdown, the pattern is the same.

I got admit that it works in the sense of controlling the narrative and the news circle. No one is even talking about Manaford sharing polling data and campaign strategic information with those damn Russians. Or Giuliani now saying that there might have happened some collusion by Trump's campaign people with Russians.

On the other hand, it is bad for the country: the economy is slowing down, 800K federal workers are not being paid, there is the risk of the credit rate of the USA being lowered (means bonds rate will have to be increased which means government paying more to creditors, which means less money for infrastructure, defense, social care...), etc.

I give him credit to upholding his promises... he indeed is running the government like his business: not paying people (federal workers), accumulating debt (tax handout to the rich), screwing partners (e.g. Canada, Germany, etc), over promising (best economy in history) and under delivering (last december stock market dive).

We all know how it ends... with bankruptcy. Main issue is that we will have to pay from our pocket to save his failing business (government).

Yes there is a pattern. Decades and Decades of Government waste and tyranny putting the country 23 trillion in debt. Decades of government mismanagement. And you blame Trump. Obvious pattern right there. Blame Trump, Blame Trump, Blame Trump.

Doesn't pass the logic test. But go ahead and keep up the pattern

None so blind as those who will not see. The problem is illegal immigration, not the shutdown. Trump didn't create that. Decades of inaction by our government has lead to a crisis point that our current President has made an issue and brought it to the forefront. Now the people who we elected to represent us and solve ever changing problems are being forced to deal with this issue. If we can get to a place where our immigration laws make sense and we have true border security, will the path we took make all that much difference?

Sometimes you have to take a stand and I believe that is what Trump is doing. Of course Pelosi is making a stand too which is expected. Next should come good faith negotiations. How long will that take and who will lead?

If a bill is passed by congress that includes the $5.7 billion to build the small amount of the wall that's being requested, and includes the protections for the illegal invaders already here as the Democrats want, and all the other things he's offered up in compromise, there's no flip flop possible. The President does not have a line-item veto. He either passes the whole thing or none of it.

The onus is now 100% on the congressional Democrats to either protect all those sweet innocent illegal invaders they love to bring out at election time, or have them live in the shadows in fear of deportation.

President Trump has indeed made a pretty big concession, indeed MANY on the right are not happy with him for it, they feel he's giving up way too much for way too little.

Such is the nature of compromise, both sides feel they've given away too much and not gotten enough.

The question remains to be seen if the Democrats will accept his overly generous offer or not.

One of my favorite expressions is revenge is a dish best served cold

If the stalemate does not end Monday Trump should go on TV and announce that he will ok the Dems 90 day budget.  Immediately he should sequester money from the state of California and New York (*yes I live in NY) for payment of federal workers after the next shutdown and  set aside also $ to fund the wall from the congressional travel budgets   Then order all the national guards to the southern border until the wall is built.

The congressional travel budgets do not exceed the total cost of the wall but their loss will drive Congress mad/

Here is my proof

For the House
In 2016, each Member's MRA increased by 1% from the 2015 level, and the MRAs range from $1,207,510 to $1,383,709, with an average of $1,268,520.

Most of each member's annual MRA allowance is used to pay their office personnel. In 2016, for example, the office personnel allowance for each member was $944,671.

Each member is allowed to use their MRA to employ up to 18 full-time, permanent employees.

For the Senate
The allowance is provided for the fiscal year. The preliminary list of SOPOEA levels contained in the Senate report accompanying the fiscal year 2017 legislative branch appropriations bill shows a range of $3,043,454 to $4,815,203. The average allowance is $3,306,570.

Also Sequester all federal funds from all sanctuary cities

When one takes something away and then later offers to return it, that would not really be considered a "overly generous offer". My comment was really meant as, is he going to back out of what agreed to again because of pressure from a few right wing pundits ? I think the determining factor in that will be how FOX portrays this in the coming days.

Everyone has an opinion so there's that. What is amazing to me is that everyone that says a wall won't work never has another option with detailed specifics. Without putting armed guards on the border with orders to shoot on sight how do you even slow down the flow. My opinion is they don't want to slow down the flow for all the obvious reasons. I suppose it will take a major catastrophe caused by our porous southern border before Congress will act.

Rob, you have to remember that even though they had the majority they still needed Democratic votes in the Senate to pass a bill on to be signed. Forget obstructionist, that's a nice way to to describe so many in Congress today. But as Serk has stated the ball is in the Houses hands at the moment and if Nancy had her way she would be somewhere overseas.

Today, right now, not two years ago, there is nothing President Trump can directly and unilaterally do to end the shutdown and the stalemate, it is 100% on congress to pass a bill then send it to him to sign it or not sign it.

Should congress pass a bill and send it to him then he would at minimum share responsibility, but right now that is not the case.

Well, clearly, you are not getting it.

The wall doesn't "fix" anything. The wall is, however, a much needed tool to efficiently and humanely control the US southern border. The wall doesn't span the entire length of the border. Just in areas that are difficult to manage otherwise. I really don't want any administration left with only gunships and bullets to manage our southern border.

Apparently you think we are to believe that managing our southern border happens magically.  It doesn't, it hasn't and it won't happen just cause you say so.

I (normally) don't care what non-citizens of the US think or how they would fix our immigration issues but, since you think we're traveling down the wrong path, I will ask.   How would you suggest we handle illegal immigration.
And yes, I think we should enforce the laws already on the books but, the Dems don't (apparently) want to do that now either.

When did you become an American citizen?

He will not answer that, I have asked multiple times. I think he may be an illegal.  :-\

Considering his prominence in the IT world I highly doubt he's illegal (Seriously, I've cyber stalked him a bit, the dude knows his stuff in his technical  area (Software engineer for a large semiconductor company, with an emphasis on Chromium, which is a bit of a big deal. I've watched some of his technical videos.))

He may be very very misled and wrong on many things, but he's not stupid. Not by a long shot.

Even if he's not currently a US citizen, I suspect that now that the president of his home country is out Trumping Trump, he might be considering pursuing such, but I don't mean to put words in his mouth... Just theorizing...

Here's an interesting thought.  Estimates of what illegals from the south cost the U.S. every year is something over fifty billion dollars.  Annually fifty billion.  If a five billion dollar wall project results in reducing the swarm by just ten percent it will pay for itself in one year.

What is it that Nancy Pelosi is attempting to save?       :uglystupid2:

Carl,
Would you mind sharing where that fifty billion dollar estimate came from?  I would like to reference it in a discussion somewhere else.
I don't doubt the numbers but with limited research have only found a 1995 GAO file/report that estimates the cost to be around 30 billion.   That's a pretty old report.

From what I read the estimates are all over the place.  I chose a lower one from what appeared to be a left leaning article.

NBC news How much does illegal immigration cost the U.S.

A little deeper digging might come up with something closer to actual reality but that 54 was as good a middle ground as I found.

@Gavin: I only saw your message now, I was riding this afternoon, rain and all, but I actually enjoy riding in the rain, since it never rains in California is a good opportunity to train the riding skills. I reserved my reliable weestrom for this kind of shitty weather, as it is easier to cleanup than the I/S or the STeed.

Getting back to business: sorry to disappoint you, but you are wrong. Plus, suggesting that I'm violating immigration law is quite disrespectful.

@Serk: main issue of having a small degree of notoriety(?) is that it creates a strong digital trail.

You are right, my fellow countrymen fell for a politician that makes Trump sound pretty reasonable. The campaign followed the same strategy: our country first, bad immigrants, let's sanitize the government from corrupt politicians. Not by accident, Steve Bannon was a close strategist in his campaign.

Oh lord, is THAT saying something ( "makes Trump  sound pretty reasonable" ) ....

..

Savago.

f6gal

There are many legal residents (not violating immigration laws) that are not citizens.

Referencing fellow countrymen, suggests one is still a citizen of that country.
