I've never been a huge John Wayne fan. But, I'm laying around with a cold and feeling miserable, tired of watching the news. Flipping thru the channels and came across it. Without a doubt, in my book, his finest work. Great supporting cast also.

Yep. Saw part of it early in AM. Believe it was 1 of only 2 movies that he was killed in. I tend to like all his shows, even very early ones.

With John Wayne's life span of movies, I have favorites in all his decades.

Angel and the Bad Man

His last role.  He was dying from cancer as was his character; he probably drew from that and incorporated into Books.

Seen most of his flicks a number of times. The Shootist is one of his best. A couple of different places list 7 times that John Wayne's character died. Sands of Iwo Jima sprang immediately to mind. Ken Caryl-R I P my Friend-not only taught me to move furniture and drive truck he also instilled the love of a Cowboy Western Movie on a Saturday afternoon when we weren't working. And Ken made a Point of watching Any John Wayne oater that was on.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

John Wayne is one of my favorite actors.

But on my list that I would re-watch without hesitation are:

Rio Bravo
The Horse Soldiers
Fort Apache
Stagecoach
In Harms Way

Just to name a few

Friend and his wife used to live in St. Croix in the mid 70's.

Wayne and Maureen O'Hara used to come to their parties.

Wayne liked St. Croix because no one was impressed he was a big movie star.

The characters John Wayne has played died in the following movies:

His death is seen in the following films:

• The Shootist - He is killed in a gunfight in at the end of the film.
• The Cowboys - He is killed by Bruce Dern's character.
• The Alamo - Playing Davy Crockett, he is killed by a Mexican soldier's lance.
• Sands of Iwo Jima - He is killed by a sniper's bullet at the end of the film.
• Wake of the Red Witch - He dies as the ship sinks.
• The Fighting Seabees - He is shot by a sniper.
• Reap the Wild Wind - He is killed by a giant squid.

His character death is not shown in the following:

• The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - His character is dead at the beginning of the film and the story is told in flashback by James Stewart who is attending his funeral.
• The Sea Chase - Lana Turner and Wayne are on a ship when it sinks, but the possibility that the characters survived is left open.
• The Deceiver - Ian Keith's character died, but the corpse was played by John Wayne.
• Central Airport - John Wayne has a very minor role as the co-pilot of an aircraft that crashes into the ocean.

Same here . I have "The Shootist" on DVD.  Since the Duke was dying, his Hollywood friends wanted in on his last movie.  Th quote in the movie is also my favorite.

I like the part where he's talking about loading only five in the Colt single action, except when needed. Absolutely right. None under the hammer!

The interaction between him and Lauren Bacall also was great. The buggy ride, especially so.

Hondo was the title of a classic Western film starring John Wayne, and was considered his greatest movie of all time by Al Bundy, and is notable for airing once every seventeen years in the Bundy world.

Hondo is a great movie, and led to a good TV show of same name.

The Shootist was Wayne's final cinematic role, concluding a 50-year career that began during the silent film era in 1926. Wayne was not, as sometimes reported, terminally ill when the film was made in 1976. A heavy cigarette smoker for most of his life, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 1964, and underwent surgical removal of his left lung and several ribs. He remained clinically cancer-free until early 1979, when metastases were discovered in his stomach, intestines, and spine; he died later that year.

I remember that TV special tribute they did for him towards the end of his career and in fact life.  It was hosted by Frank Sinatra and many great stars made appearances.  He blasted smoking when he had his say.  There are not many Hollywood types that I admire, however the Duke was my favorite along with Clint Eastwood.

“ They Were Expendable “ is filled with so much more real fact than fiction, it always stood out to me as one of his triumphs. It’s rumored that he broke down and had to leave the set after mingling with the real PT Boat guys that were advisors on the film.
A book called “ At Close Quarters “ chronicals in exhaustive detail the same historic events depicted in the film. Taken from Navy records.
TCM always has it for Memorial Day and I always record it.

Few people realize that in “ The Greatest Story Ever Told”, he had to literally beg just to get the lowly part of the “ Centurion “ whose only words after the crucifixion are “Truly he was the son of God “. Spoken in his usual drawl and timber.

I love all the Wayne movies and loved the Characters he portrayed in films. But the real man was different than the characters he played. I have a few others from that time like the movie Its a Wonderful life with James Stewart, the Rifleman series, and some of Waynes movies.

How did this thrice-married, hard-drinking, larger-than-life megastar make his leap to Catholicism? Faith danced around John Wayne all of his adult life. All three of his wives had been raised Catholic, and all seven of his children were brought up in the Church. His first wife, Josie, who prayed for Duke’s conversion till the end, convinced him to attend numerous parish events with her. He sometimes complained to friends that he was up to his neck in Catholics, but perhaps as he interacted with genuine, faithful people, misconceptions and prejudices fell away. Did the classic church potluck plant seeds of conversion?

Two days before he died, Wayne, in tremendous pain, agreed when his son Patrick asked him if they should call the priest now. “Yeah,” Duke said, “I think that’s a good idea.” Fr. Robert Curtis, UCLA Medical Center chaplain, arrived. He baptized the dying man, probably conditionally, as Wayne had grown up in a Christian church, and administered last rites. That night, Wayne fell into a coma. “I don’t know the technicalities of the Church or what constitutes a conversion,” said Michael. “But Dad did die in the Church.”

You know when I am feeling down, or worried, I read my bible and I have never come away without feeling much better.

John Wayne was usually type casted.  In The Shootist he was departed from that pattern and truly showed fully his acting skills.  Likewise in True Grit.

Serk, it's too bad you're starting with his best.  Perhaps you should have worked your way up.

Even today, many of John Wayne's movies stand up....mostly due to his presence and a few of his great old regular character actor co-stars....and in the case of the Westerns, the authentic settings and look/feel of them. I love older westerns especially from the 50's and 60's, and in particular John Wayne westerns. The Shootist is near the top of the list for sure as is a great comedy, McClintock. At the top of the list for me is She Wore a Yellow Ribbon....one thing about Wayne....he never had to over-act like many do in newer westerns in particular as he just came across as so authentic.

for those who don't know how he got his nick name of Duke when he was a kid.

He had an Airedale named Duke that stayed by his side always. He would always walk to the firehouse. one day, one of the fireman said Here is Duke and Lil' Duke. Lil' Duke was then what everybody called him.

McClintock, fun movie, Jerry Van Dyke, Stefanie Powers (maybe her first movie), his oldest son, Yvonne De Carlo, etc.
Interesting that his name is pronounced different ways during the movie.
