Exhaust Baffle

While working on the bike I discovered one of the rear baffles is missing. Bike runs great but if you listen closely you notice a slight difference in tone between the two pipes. I looked online but can't seem to find just the baffle to buy. Also how are they installed? Do they just press in our am I looking at a welding job?

Are these OEM pipes?  Doesn't sound like it because I didn't think the baffling was removable

Yes these are the OEM pipes. I'm not sure where  the baffle went but have to assume it wasn't there when I bought the bike two years ago.

We'll I could be wrong ( it may have happened before) but I think unless you do a full on glass pack conversion or similar you are stuck with it like that or replace the whole thing

Someone probably cut the piggies on one side. Or had a damged exhaust and replaced it with a pile that had the piggies cut. If someone punched out the baffles
Their would be a very noticeable difference in the sound from each side.

Not knowing too much about the different exhaust, I would start with a picture and know what make.

MarkT makes them. msb posted about his. Others have posted pictures too. I think there is one in shoptalk, about making your own.

I'm suspecting you have the 6 pack, which uses a slip in baffle.

OEM exhaust?

I believe you would only see "baffles" if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

OEM, you only see the piggies.

Unless the OEM exhaust has been hacked up.

I'm out of town and away from the bike for two weeks so can't take a photo. From what I can see it is an OEM exhaust but it would appear as though someone has cut the piggies off right at the end of the baffle. My guess would be that when they cut the piggies they broke one of the baffles off, but I don't know for sure. I just thought if I could fix it I would.

I agree. But inside each tailpipe there should be three baffles with or without piggies. One of mine only has two and a hole where the third one should be.

You are not describing how the OEM is made. There are not three separate baffles. There is a muffler can with baffling inside three pipes from the headers going in all to the same can and then three piggies exiting the one can.

This is a good drawing of the OEM exhaust.

As others have stated, the "Piggies" are attached to a back plate and the baffles are enclosed and not visible.  Unless someone modified the system.

Maybe  I am looking at this wrong but maybe not.
Looking at MarkTs' drawing it appears that the end of the actual muffler (where the extension attaches) is where the 'Rear Baffles' Arrow points to. That appears to be the visible end of the piggies where the piggies are attached to the muffler.  It does look like there are tubes connecting that to the 'Rear Baffle Plate' toward the front of the muffler.

That picture helps, so the piggies have been cut off and the rear baffles that are circled is what I am talking about. One of them is missing completely so when you look down the pipe through the hole (in the rear baffle plate) left by the missing rear Baffle you can see the front baffles located in front of the rear baffle plate as the shown on the diagram.

To be able to see the baffles someone had to cut more than the piggies. The piggies are made onto a plate that covers the baffles. So you cant see the baffles unless that plate has been cut off also.

Exactly!   In the drawing, the circle that indybobm added is where the plate is located.

According to the drawing the rear baffles are within the circle and the plate is towards the front of the bike. It is the rear baffles I'm looking at first and then the plate. Aside from my missing rear baffle my exhaust looks exactly as the picture shows.

Bottom line.  Someone molested those pipes and like I said before you can cut off the entire can and do a glass pack type conversion or get new pipes or live with it. There isn't much chance of restoring them to stock

Sure there is. MarkT sells the rear plates with the piggies on them. You fasten them back onto your cans, and you have your piggies back.

Or do what I did. Add on 4" truck stacks. Then I'm going to slip in some 4" marine silencers.

If you look
At the drawing you will see a dotted circle to the back of the Baffles. You  CANNOT see the baffles on an unmolested set of OEM pipes.
I just took some photos of my spare set of pipes to show what they should look like with piggies intact

Restoring the piggies is one thing. If some of the internal baffling is gone that's a little harder

Thanks for the picture Bighead, that does not look like my set up so when I get home in a couple of weeks I'll have to compare you photo to what I have.

That is a set Off of an Interstate. The tour/standard the piggies are vertical instead of horizontal.
