Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: June 18, 2019, 11:05:45 AM »

Me? Nah, not even on my best day have I ever been accused of being that… However, like anyone, I guess, brightness has come into my life now and then, and it has been… well… illuminating…  Most recently, as a matter of fact, I had this experience, and… well, like is so often the case, it is part of a much longer tale, and it will require some predicate work to create just the right context… If you have the patience and perseverance, you may proceed to read-on at your own peril…

From time to time, a light bulb will go out on our girl, and I, or someone, will replace the spent item with a new one… Nothing new or earth-shaking here, of course, and everybody does the same, too. However, since achieving near mythical status, our girl seems to automatically attract benevolent characters and spur them to some form of generous action.

Troutdude and Lucky13, for example, decided ALI needed LED lights not so long ago, and… well, you can guess the outcome of that collaboration… Yep, soon enough our girl had a new LED headlight and spots in her Cobra light bar. Nice look, too, and I was as pleased with her appearance as I was impressed with the functionality of that not-so-little upgrade. Only, the headlight later went out on a road-trip to a remote village in West Virginia… Big Wolf had nothing to do with the loss of illumination on the ride he’d arranged, of course, and I’m confident those ramps played no significant role in this either, still…

We were sitting around one evening chewing the fat and big-dogging-it like is so typical of these gatherings, when I happened to mention that I was going to have to find an auto parts store or something so I could purchase a replacement bulb… Keith, 3Valks, said, “Hold on a minute…” He walked over to his bike and soon produced a spare bulb he had stuck away in one of his bags… Mitch then proceeded to swap the old for the new, and lo and behold, there was light!

For the following three months or so, I was quite content with the ‘yellow’ headlight and two white spots showing forward… Not as bright as the LED had been, naturally, but I very seldom ride when it is dark out, so there was no real downside to that… Ever mindful of nocturnal critters, I am a firm believer in the ‘ounce of prevention’ philosophy of ridership! Still, there will always be the odd instance where either early or late, we will find ourselves timidly moseying amongst various members of the food chain who happen to be… inadvertently placing us in harm’s way…

Well, at InZane this time, there was this guy… A very imaginative, creative, inventive sort who has these inspirations from time to time, and… He sees the same things we all do, but then he ponders on them some and comes up with downright solid ideas about how to improve or mitigate issues the rest of us just adjust to and put up with… Most of us know him as the former ‘Joshcornkid’ and the current ‘Darksider’, but his real name is Josh Chambers. He is truly something else, too!

Besides being rather intelligent and such a downright nice guy, he has a Valk pedigree in that his Valk was formerly ridden by his own father… he’s a legacy Valker so to speak. He is a very skillful rider in his own rite, and he is someone I’ve gotten to know over the last couple of years… and to increasingly respect and appreciate as another in the pantheon of good riders, great wrenches, and all-around good people that comprise this body of folk we know as the VRCC.

Among his creations is the ‘Day-Bright’ headlight mod for Standards and Tourers. I’d heard of those, even seen a couple, and they did look great! However, as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I seldom ride when the sun isn’t out, so… I’d never been moved to actually move in that direction myself… Once again, and completely in-character for this energetic and generous guy, Josh decided I needed one anyway!

Yep, one fine morning I ventured outside for a gander at the world beyond my room at the Sagebrush Inn, and to see what all I might be missing. Jerry, my partner and companion on this outing, was sitting in his own camp chair just savoring the morning… He pointed out something on my exhaust, and we briefly chatted a bit about it. We also chatted about the shock-absorber bushings replacement performed by Troutdude & MitchO the first evening there… ALI is such a sensation, that she always seems to draw unusual attention and voluntary assistance from our many good friends!

Then, I let my eyes wander over our girl as I so often do… and I let the many wonderful memories percolate through my recollector muscle, as I smiled that satisfied smile that comes with a couple of amazing decades of indescribable companionship… and then… Huh? That ain’t the right headlight bulb on our girl! The one Keith gave us is nothing like that!!!

Turns out that Josh had decided I needed an upgrade, so he’d taken the initiative to remedy a potential hazard for us! He’d discretely given us a rather expensive gift while I wasn’t looking… the gesture of genuine friendship one brother makes towards another… a gift for the sake of doing something worthwhile for someone we care for with no thought of commercial reward, personal benefit, or even recognition… Just a good deed for the sake of doing something good… for someone else… I really had to fight those danged ol’ gnats right then when it all sunk-in!!!

Naturally I had to check them out, and I could readily see they were a definite improvement over the already more than adequate light arrangement we’d had. Still it was bright out so the full benefit would have to wait to be discovered. Yes, of course I also tried them after dark too, but I didn’t go for a ride, so the real appreciation would not come for a few days… But, come that did!!!

All along, Jerry and I had been receiving increasingly stronger ‘encouragement’ from headquarters to cut all that roaming around like a couple of lost gypsy kids short and proceed to get our too long absent arses back to… you know, home-base… The weather seemed in cahoots with the bosses, too, as our ‘plans’ continued to be not working out and forcing us to improvise and create new ones… daily! In fact, the return home would also not be without challenges…

The forecast seemed to indicate we were already late in constructing an ark soon to be needed! We appeared to have three days to cover the distance back to our starting points for this Odyssey, and anything beyond that was sure to be risky. Allan, Punisher, had joined us on our way back, and we all made it home dry and safe… It took this not-so-youthful rider an extra day, though, but mercifully that was almost totally free of moisture, save for a sprinkle or two merely a couple of miles from the house… and, that thanks largely to a choice made the day before…

See, we spilt-up in Forest City, AR, and all three of us headed towards our respective barns on separate but more direct routes… I still had one more night on the road to go… and the forecast for my final (fourth) day held much potential for adversity that could be in our way! In Eufaula, AL, for that last night, I decided to turn-in really early to facilitate a very early departure… you know, to improve my odds and to give me more options…

It takes much incentive to incline this guy to take a chance riding two-lane roads in the dark… especially on roads I’ve seen countless deer, alive and roadkill, over the years! I rolled the dice anyway and twisted ALI’s throttle at 4am that final day, and I must admit I was more than a little worried that I just may have embarked upon a fool’s errand! Holy cow!!!

Man, that ‘Day-Bright’ headlight is not exaggerated or misnamed at all!!! Easily the best headlight I’ve ever had on any bike, and it sure made all those critters more visible than ever before. Where I’d been content just knowing they were there before by seeing the reflection from their eyes, this time I actually saw far more animals than on any previous rides under similar conditions, and it was surely confidence building, not to mention tension-easing. Thanks, Josh, that was one heck of a fine gift, and it made my final ride safer and more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been… I truly do appreciate ya, dude!!!

I added the same lighting to my bike while there. While riding in the dark East of Payson, AZ, I spotted an elk standing in the road. I had plenty of time to react and wait for it to saunter off the road before I passed where he crossed. Thanks Josh for your invention and help.

AWESOME Bruce!  Not to steal your thunder here, but I also was availed of Josh's offerings at Inzane - here's a pic of it.  In my case, I wasn't short of light downrange with my 130/90w hi-power headlight upgrade, but I did want to reduce the load on the alternator as I have several other big load users on Jade, I recently had to replace it, and this one is a natural to reduce abusing the juice source while improving the look!  Albeit it wasn't gratis ( Jade is w/o the mascot status of Ali ) it does look pretty cool and works well.  Eagle Lights calls this the Infinity Beam.  One of the commentaters said it looks like an Alien Eyeball - which I concur.  In fact I like to think of it as maybe an Alien Dragon eyeball!

BTW - There was some confusion on how much power it draws - and specs are not on the Eagle Lights website.  So I measured it with a quality electrician's multimeter.  It's 25.88w on hi beam with engine running at 2500rpm, 13.36w on lo beam.  1/5 and 1/7 the power use of the 130/90 it replaced and nearly as bright (though it doesn't illuminate "3/4 mile" as reported)!  Also - on high beam it has a circuit that also lights the lo beam side; takes it's power from the hi beam circuit.  The hi power is twice the lo power, indicating they use the same LED on both emitters; the lighting difference comes from the design of the reflectors.  I've found hi-lo LED fixtures for the 4.5" "passing lights" which are inbound.  My "spots" are hi-lo H4 headlights now, powered by a custom circuit I designed.  Curious to see if the new "spots" will deliver light as well as the H4's. Hope so.

And of course every dragon actually needs TWO eyeballs - here's the first one from our own Clint The Leather Man:

Less room than oem. You remove the reflector that is OEM.

I purchased the halo light. It stops cages from pulling out or turning in front of you (so far in my case)
Josh is a great brother (son, grandson ).  The light is well worth the money.

THIS STATEMENT IS FROM THE PREZ. I received no compensation for this statement.

As usual Bruce outdoes himself in his posts.

Bruce has brought a great deal of inspiration, and joy into the VRCC community. It feels good to give back.

Earlier in the week I was assisting the install of the new shock bushings on Ali by playing the role of supervisor with a beer in hand, though somehow my hands did get dirty. I noticed that the ol gal (Ali) had LED Auxiliary lights, but the main headlight was Halogen. Honestly, that just don't sit right with me. A plan was hatched...

Over the past couple of days I got familiar with Bruce's routine. Before breakfast he'd have a smoke while fondly staring at his ol gal. Then it was off to breakfast. The hotel didn't have Grits so I'm not sure if he'd actually eat anything or not. It was at this time I covertly (10 or so people watched me..) snuck over to Ali to do the deed. I carefully explained to the ol gal that even though she was a beautiful as ever she needed a bit of a face-lift.

Having performed the operation many times before it was done quickly and skillfully. I left Ali still sleepy and waking up from her enhancements.

I honestly thought that Bruce wouldn't notice for some time. I had previously gotten the blessing from Troutdude to do the deed and asked him if he had room to take the old reflector housing back with him. It was while I was walking in the direction of Troutdudes trailer that Bruce called me over.

I should have known that Ali would have been proud of her new features. She must have been gleaming "Look at me, Look at me!".

I'll tell you the gnats must have been thick. Bruce couldn't keep em out of his eyes, and they must have choked up with windpipe too. True appreciate is a beautiful thing.

My company motto is "It's good to see, and be seen". This moment however isn't about me. This moment is about Bruce and Ali. As we all know, as a motorcyclist being seen is important. The cool, intense white light of the LED will make them (Bruce and Ali) more visible in the daylight hours. Being 3 times brighter than the stock halogen bulb, they will also have more confidence while riding at night.

This was my favorite moment at InZane. I love that ol coot, and it was my pleasure being a part of Bruce and Ali's story.

This 'ol' coot' cootn't be happier! Man, to receive such a wonderful and totally functional gift like that... well... heck-fire, now those danged ol' gnats are returning! Josh, you do know how to make a person feel special and good all over! As for ALI, well, she's used to being fondled and caressed by many different folks by now, and she actually enjoys all of the attention she receives from so many special people... men and women alike! Jaden Kinter has even had her hands on ALI, helping Damon replace a burnt-out wiring harness once upon a time on our first Darby Ride.

The joy or touring North America, the sheer delight of operating such a fine machine, the mental clarity and personal growth that comes with extended road trips around the vastness of our home continent, all are each in themselves worth the effort and expense. The highlight of all of it, though, has been in the human interactions she's brought this naïve pilgrim into throughout these past twenty plus years. Man, so many fine folks, countless characters, dear, dear friends... The restoration of faith in human potential.

This experience is but one of many, many times when the joy of our time together has risen to an extraordinary level... One can't grow used to that. One can only shake his/her head and acknowledge the goodness being performed and/or given, and attempt to show appropriate gratitude... that can't be done, of course, but it must be attempted!

As grand as it is to be on the receiving end of such a compelling story, it is also good to be on the other end of that, too. I've been on both, and I do know of what I speak. You do too, Josh, and all should know that about you! You are a kind, thoughtful, and generous person who has a solid value system and a well calibrated moral compass. It is, therefore, a doubly good-feeling to receive such a kind gesture from such a worthwhile person. Thanks... ALI and I will treasure that gift... and the memory of a very special time... always!!!

Anudder question; does it put out more heat in back? Also in looking at (and comparing) the "dragon's eye" that Mark T has on his, I'm wondering which lamp does the best job...the dragon eye or the lamp in the video.

The lights put out a little heart but not much. Different headlights out out different amounts of light. The Dragons Eye does put out the most light, but... Do you have running lights? That can affect which headlight you may want to choose.

Yes, I have running lights which I'd also like to convert. I'm certainly open to suggestions for both the headlight and running lights, then everything on the bike will be LED. I'll most likely order your bracket and have it sent to my daughter's place in Wisconsin where I'm headed in a few days, do the conversion up there while visiting.

I'm luv'in this story ...... way to go Josh!  cooldude

Bruce, need a picture of the beam Josh mounted on "ALI".

Josh, I bought your bracket at InZane in Spearfish if I remember correctly......maybe Billings  Undecided and I do remember it was the last one you had on hand ..... lucky me!
After getting it I decided I didn't like the look of the Daymaker especially the dark trim one. My taste is that it was just to modern looking to be on the Valk but that's just me. I think after reading this thread I may reconsider.  I haven't looked into any other alternative lights but I do like the look of Mark T's light but  that one apparently is not plug and play an not as bright. I suppose any 7" light will work, I just need to look around. Was wondering if there was just a bulb a guy could plug in so as not to alter the original look. I also would rather support the guys on the forum so if you sell the lights yourself I would just a soon buy from you if that's doable.

Anyway thanks again for looking out for Bruce and "ALI"!!!

Troutdude and Mitcho have them as well ....... but that's on an Interstate. I think that bulb is too deep for the Standard and Tourer.

Anyone happen to know the part number/source/URL/something for the Interstate LED conversions? Really wanting to do that on mine...

As far as the Standard/Tourer, I believer the Dragon Eye bulb Mark T got is actually one of the brightest bulbs available, although it's a little spendy, but well worth it if you want BRIGHT.

(And is pretty much plug and play unless you wanna switch parts of the light on and off separately from the main headlight controls.)

Josh does sell the bulbs directly too, I don't wanna speak for him on specifics, but e-mail him and he'll hook you up:  ValkyrieJosh@gmail.com

The H4 substitute LED bulbs don't focus well as they aren't really compatible with reflectors made for tungsten bulbs.  I have tried half a dozen of them including two different models that have small emitters supposedly positioned just right to emulate tungsten bulbs.  They still smear the light instead of focus it and I got flashed a lot by oncoming traffic.  I gave up on that soln, decided it was necessary to get fixtures designed for LED emitters as a complete unit.  Two main concerns for me - to get a long range light ouput on hi beam like my 130/90 hi-power upgrade, while reducing load on the alternator.  My 130/90 upgrade lit up the road CLEARLY for a measured half mile.  In conjunction with H4 "spots" actually 4.5" headlights, I had an abundance of admittedly yellowish light downrange, covering long distance and the ditches.  My alternator didn't like it and blew out rather early.  Thirdly, I don't care for the multiple emitters look of most of the LED fixtures aka "Daymakers".  Looks kludgy to me.

My LED "spots" fixtures just arrived.  They were advertised to be hi-lo like headlights.  They aren't - they are single-bright spots like all the rest and they are getting a bad review from me for lying. They also claim they are HALO - they aren't - and they are 60w - they aren't, they meter at 25.2w.  Can these guys be truthful about ANYTHING?  However I will use them as they appear to be the same quality as the spendy ones and they cost me $30.99 for the pair delivered.  I don't think at this point 4.5" LED headlights (hi-lo) exist.  I'll replace my lower small LED fixtures with them, run them all the time, and leave the existing H4 "spots" in place, flip them on to warn oncoming turning traffic.  The goal is the brilliant white light all the time for visibility and save the alternator, adding the tungsten hi beam "spots" for extra night light and warnings.  I need to mod my custom H4 spots circuit for the new functionality.

Here's one of the spots.  Look to be same quality as Eagle Lights and Daymaker spots which sell at $99.99 for the pair w/o shells. Likely come from the same source.  I paid $30 for the inserts shipped - already have the shells.

I should have known that Ali would have been proud of her new features. She must have been gleaming "Look at me, Look at me!".

Heh...those headlights are lookers for sure! I've got Josh's adapter in The Dragon and am a happy camper. I highly recommend the LED upgrades.

Was this before or after Ali got washed by Kali? LOL! If before, DDT may have noticed the upgrade sooner than expected as it would be the only clean part on the bike Smiley

Terry,

Yeah, one great story for sure! Puts me in mind of another great story back in the day!!! Anytime I call Troutdude now, the first words out of his mouth are, "Whatever you do, don't sell her!" Here are a couple of pics you wanted to see... As others have mentioned, doing business with Josh is a good experience. He won't steer you wrong or attempt to take advantage of you...

'Dragon's Eye' - Day Maker up close and personal...
navigate me to nearest gas station
'Dragon's Eye' - Day Maker and LED spots...

We've added a couple of thousand miles worth of bugs, so she would look more like herself, than she did right after Josh had worked his magic... I do like the look that enhancement provides, but I really like the increased visibility during periods of darkness most of all!!!

Thanks for the pictures Bruce!
Man, your whole set up is LED. I'm thinking, with less heat off the LEDs, those bugs won't bake on so bad and be easier to wipe off ....... guess I was wrong!  Grin
