coils and wires

Just wanted to find out if there is any obvious way to figure out if I need new coils or wires (gets pricey to replace all). The bike is a 1998 with 11k miles, probably original coils and wires. As far as I remember it was starting and idling fine before I started the project.

Any advice?

Don't try to fix something that isn't broken. I have a '97 with 170 thousand miles and it's got original coils and wires

coils and wires are bullet proof.   only thing with wires which is very extremely rare is the resistor in the plug end could go bad. again very very rare.

test the coil and wires per manual, write down results for base line.

The coils failed on George.  But then he's blown and has been for 30,000 miles.  Likely that's coil abuse.  There was virtually no spark.  I have never seen an engine run with such a nothing spark.  I replaced them with more powerful VTX coils, and he fired right up.  Also installed a Dyna3000 and a pressure sw with relay to ground the D3000 retard wire when boost hits 4#.  And installed a boost meter.  Yes I did test the signal generators and the voltage specs at the coils, per the shop manual.  Used a peak voltage adapter, documented it all - posted the tests here.  Everything up to spec - except the anemic spark.
