Sidestand springs

I had my sidestand springs coming off some years ago (jacked my bike up the wrong way) and had it fixed by a motorcycle shop who did not have any Honda parts.  Now that they are getting slack, I want to replace the old ones with the 2 OEM sidestand springs.
When I pulled the springs off, the small spring was inside the larger spring and both were connected to the same points (sidestand and the 'spring' bolt that is not on the pic).
I find it hard to understand why you would connect 2 springs at the same place. Looked at the board topics and noticed some folks had only one spring but could not find my answer. The manual does not provide any help either.
Can somebody confirm that spring 5 slides into spring 4 and both springs are connected to the same points?
If not, I would appreciate some help.

My 98 Tourer has one spring. I have had it off a few times.

I don't know where that exploded view came from but there is no extra small spring in the view I find on HDL.

Had to replace the bolt on mine last year. Only one spring on mine. Here is how it is mounted. Maybe the second one is a safety feature like the cable through a garage door spring? I don't see it on any of the fiche pictures though. I also would like to know where that pic came from.

I copied the pic from this board when I searched sidestand spring. http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,17552.0.html  The OEM No's are 50541-MT3-610 (SPG, SIDE STAND) and 50542-MT3-610 (SPG SIDE STAND SU).
My bike comes with 2 springs. I have a 1999 F6C Std (Austrian Export) Model. Perhaps it's an export thing.

True, it is probably a european thing or possibly required by regulation. There was two springs on the aftermarket centerstand that I ordered from SW-MOTECH (Germany, I believe) which I installed on my non-Valk bike. They even have a 'spring puller' for attaching the double spring to the sidestand retaining bolt (photo below). The spring puller is just a wire with a hook on the end .... with a tube on the opposite end of the wire that you pull on sorta like a rip cord handle. I made my own spring puller. *Twisted Throttle, the name that you see on the pic's watermark, is the US retailer for SW-MOTECH .*

Are you able to post a pic of your secondary spring with a tape measure next to it? The backup spring is a good idea.

Any chance the spring #5 actually goes to the swivel #3 for the sidestand switch on European bikes? My California I/S only has one spring. The only thing that goes bad here is the spring retention bolt, so both springs going there seems redundant.

that would be an excellent idea if you could angle the hook accordingly. The 'swivel' is actually the 'switch holder' (oem term) .... I guess keeps the switch from freely rotating. However if you could attach the second spring to the swivel, the swivel would then put tension on the retainer bolt making it more difficult for the retainer bolt from loosening on it's own. Two birds with one stone.

Just to finish this topic, I found the answer.
According to European guidelines, each sidestand must be equipped with one or more devices (spring, clip) so that it will remain in the up- and down position. In the case of springs, trouble free operation must be obtained:

* At least 10.000 times with 2 springs
* At least 15.000 times with one spring

So Honda opted to go for the 2 spring option at some point for the EU market.

Note the small spring is bent around the nut to keep it from sliding over it all the time.
