Was trying to beat the storm rolling into Nashville doing 105 mph pulling a trailer and dodging people who are to ignorant to move over when driving the same speed as the person in the slow lane while the winds were blowing in every direction trying to blow me off the road......drives me nuts. Made it to Lebanon,TN and will roll towards the Trace in the morning when it dries out.

Just venting.  :coolsmiley:

touche  :cooldude: Didn't want to go faster, but would have liked to hold the speed to beat the weather and not stop and start so to speak, but point taken.

Ever been driving in that left lane, cruising past a driver and have someone race up behind you at 100 mph+?  Dragging a trailer at that speed was probably more dangerous than the irritation that the fella driving the speed limit caused you.

I love riding and I've ridden fast but going on a public forum and complaining about someone like that while admitting what you were doing puts motorcyclists in a bad light.  If you weren't on a bike, I still stand by this viewpoint.

The vast majority of vehicles on the road were not intended to drive those speeds.  Especially not towing a trailer.

Just be safe man.  Getting wet isn't so bad and sure beats the risk of rear ending some blue hair or some teeny bopper texting on the cell phone.

Actual speed is irrelevant. I don't care if you're doing 140 MPH... If you're in the passing lane, and someone's coming up behind you, and you're not ACTIVELY passing a vehicle to your right, MOVE OVER.

While I do agree to some degree, say I am doing 85 mph in a 65 mph speed limit in the left/fast lane, do you expect me to get over in the slower lane to the right if there is slower traffic for me to weave in and out of so causes me grief?  I don't think so, just my opinion.

I had road rage once on the interstate from a jerk behind me in the left lane in this scenario and he was a psycho beeping his horn and flipping me off and tailgating me to within feet off my rear bumper.  I couldn't get over since much slower traffic doing 65 mph in the right lane and I eventually got over to allow him thru, but doesn't make speeding and tailgating legal does it?

If you are in that much of a hurry, maybe you should lose your drivers' license?

Now, if NO ONE in the right lane is there and you can get over to the right with NO traffic issues, by all means then yes I will normally get over but if there is traffic in the right lane ahead and I am already doing say 10 mph over posted speed limit, too darn bad, I am staying in the left lane.

Again drawing on the miles and years i've spent driving in all 48 states and other areas. I wish i could tell you you happened on a unique situation. You didn't. My take is the main culprit here is da cruise control. Or as happens around here a LOT-they just cruise the left lane cause they can!!  :uglystupid2: There is no rhyme or reason to it-they just appear to be practicing stupid and getting rather good at it i might add.  :cooldude:  RIDE SAFE.

Before I retired, I used to work with a guy that had a jacked up F-350. On top he had a bunch of lights on a rail and a high wattage sound system that he ran a loudspeaker through. To be sure he wasn't ignored, he had some huge air horns mounted on the front as well. When he would run up against someone sleeping in the left lane, he'd use all three systems....especially the horns. Was like having a locomotive on your butt. He also had this huge bumper and grille guard combo so if you hit your brakes, you'd only tear up the back of your vehicle. My route home usually followed him about half way, it was amusing to see the reaction of some of the drivers....especially the q-tips. I once told him I never wanted to get caught in front of him. He told me not to worry....I was his boss.  :cooldude:

Yep. Too many times when traveling I've had to drop into the slower lanes to pass somebody daydreaming in the passing lane. I think there are some people who are offended when someone passes then and so they just try to prevent it. I run into like minded people pretty often commuting back and forth to work. They run the speed limit or a little under until they hit an area where passing is allowed. Then they speed up to keep you behind them. When I'm on the scooter I can nearly always blast around them anyway. When I'm in the full size dodge truck it takes a lot of gas and road. The worlds full of morons, most of em drive a cage.

I find it exasperating when someone is on cruise control and decides to pass a semi just before you get there.  Then ride for miles along side the semi, in cruise, in one of the most dangerous places to be out there and won't speed up till they get back in the slow lane.
Obstructing traffic or controlling traffic is against the law.

105 pulling a trailer?

Not to change the issue. I don't hang in the fast lane and move when some one wants to run faster than me.  I do the speed limit + what ever they let me get away with. Normally the only people passing me are the lane weavers and crotch rocket boys and the cops. They are moving so much faster than anyone else, you don't see or hear them coming. When ever I see any of them I don't move. Let them figure how to get by me. I'm not moving in frount of them as they go by me at twice my speed.

SDS

Ky, Dave...I don't want to get in a forum fight here but the speed absolutely does matter.  I totally agree that people should NOT camp out in that left lane.  The problem comes when they aren't doing anything wrong.  If you come cruising up behind a car at 40+ mph over the speed limit most drivers aren't going to see you right away.

Hell, I'm no saint but if I'm doing something wrong I have a hard time faulting someone else for my own frustrations.

I'll back out of this thread now.  I really am not trying to get a fight going and I think I'd enjoy sitting around talking bikes with just about everyone on this forum.

Stay safe,

How about those who you are going to run over at 60 and can't get around at 78?

If someone wants around me when I am in the fast lane... I'll let them by at my first opportunity to do so.  Even if it means I have to slide into the slow traffic for a bit.  That is as long as I am the one holding things up.  If there is someone holding me up... the guy behind me can wait, just like I am.

I am an advocate of "If someone wants to go faster than you... get out of their way."

I have ridden with KY,Dave on some long rides and although we have a times been well above the posted speed limits the way we passed was always safe and in no way dangerous.

A few years ago while going down Illinois, Rt-127 we were passing all those poking along at a quite rapid rate and in my mirror I saw a Harley keep up with us but never catch up with us, every time we would pass a car he would also but never catch up with us. This went on for about thirty miles or so. Then we came to Pinkneyville to a stoplight, we were in the left lane and the Harley pulled up besides us to turn right and when we looked over the Harley turned out to be a State trooper and we were in a state of shock. If we were so fast and dangerous he would have given us an offical award to commerate the driving abilities we were displaying. But all we got when we looked over was a nod and a short wave as he turned right.

So I think there are some on this board that have the wrong impression of what KY-Dave was trying to say.

I think our membership, like our bikes is getting older. When I started this board virtually any mention of a new bike trailer included how it handled at 100 plus mph. Fast rides, pics of speedometers taken while riding showing high-speeds, videos of fast rides were all common and enjoyed without criticism. Inzane activities included a burnout contest, and I remember one pic from an Inzane with 3 (maybe 4) valks, nose-to-nose doing a  burnout.

Personally I miss those days. Virtually every post made now, (and I'm guilty of it too sometimes) involves a seemingly endless thread of 2'nd guessing the poster.

Let's not forget, the Valk is a performance cruiser, a "muscle bike" and many of us bought them for that specific reason.

I just can't believe that all you self-righteous people made the rash assumption that David was violating the speed limit at 105 mph.  You know, David didn't mention the speed limit or on what highway he was riding.   ;D

As to the one who insisted that most vehicles are not intended to be able to handle that kind of speed, "Puh-leese!  Really?"  :2funny:

Incidentally, in most, if not all states, it's against the law to impede traffic regardless of the speed.  In my home state it's against the law, away from metropolitan areas, to remain in the left lane except while passing.   :)

That said, getting in a hurry can surely put you at risk of mishap and injury.  Remember that about half the drivers on the road are below average in intelligence and don't let them get to you.

This thread has certainly gotten a tad off it's original topic.
Willow's comments were interesting. I reread this thread and could find not one post where the comment was made that the speed limit was "violated".
There were several comments (mine included) that to travel that fast pulling a trailer was not the smartest thing to do. There was one post (mine) that doubted the veracity of the claim of the speed.
The comment that "the vast majority of vehicles on the road are not intended to drive those speeds" was followed by the sentence "Especially pulling a trailer." Very integral part of the comment. It can be discussed all day whether vehicles are "intended" to drive those speeds. To pull a trailer at those speeds is foolhardy and endangers the driver and it endangers others.
Unfortunately there are many many people on this planet and once in a while it isn't only about "me".
Ii is sometimes necessary to look out for others in the process of taking care of yourself.
Risk taking reaction to the a$$hole behavior of others doesn't really serve a valid purpose.

lol!  I guess I must've read the thread a little more thoroughly than did you, Ricoman.  It was a somewhat tongue in cheek response.  After all, it's obvious there are no 105 mph speed limits in the Eastern Continental U.S.  I did spread enough smileys around to tip the readers off that I was only half serious.  Well, okay, more like 63.7 percent.

Just a short lesson in the use of the English (at least American English) language.  The positioning of the term especially adds a degree of intensity to the preceding phrase, but leaves that phrase in a state allowing it to still stand completely on its own merit.  ;)

Personally I wouldn't pull a trailer with a motorcycle.  I consider it something of a violation of the value of two wheeling as well as a serious safety hazard, but I would never aloud inform Dave that his choice of doing so or how he has chosen to do so is unsafe.  I'm just not that arrogant.  I am arrogant, just not that arrogant.   ;D

I put the post out there, Ricoman, because it appeared to me that some of us (first person plural) have a tendency to get a little full of ourselves and choose to present our assessment of what is or isn't safe to others with experience equally as valid or superior to our own.  I've not yet changed my opinion.   :)

Now all the stuff is just my jovial funny self hiding what I truly think.  8)  What follows is my real opinion.

On the original topic of the thread and the question of the OP, I believe people who park in the left lane (in right side driving cultures), especially those doing so intentionally because they feel entitled or obligated to block drivers who desire to move more rapidly down the road, should be taken off the side of the flyway, removed from the driving position and have their knuckles rapped sharply by a twelve inch section of rebar.

That's not going to happen today or in the near future, because no one has elected me king of the world.   :D

The most brilliant thought put forth in this thread was the use of the well worn adage regarding those who drive faster than I and those who drive more slowly.
