This derails the black market and provides another path for tax revenue that you can choose not to participate in.  Also increases availability for those who have a medical need without the higher cost of a prescription path - they can "self medicate".  Personally, I gave it up decades ago.  I abused not just ganja, but that laced with other sometimes unknown additives, and "medicated" daily.  The weed and additives had a long-term negative effect, mostly to memory.  Though I never was induced to being obnoxious or belligerent or thinking I was a great driver while influenced - like alcohol does.  This is mostly a good thing.  And provides a venue to challenge the feds meddling in state business - maybe set a good precedent to point to in other disputes.

My state keeps passing medical use then court repeals and just last night passed it again. I for one voted against it. Everyone with a sore back had a weed card. Just an end around for rec use. I would vote for legalizing it just don't hide behind the medical card. If ya wanna smoke weed I dont care. The same chemical in it can be prescribed in pill form by your Dr. if its for medical use. :uglystupid2:

Back in the day Car and Driver magazine did a driving test with their editors drinking alcohol and a separate test with them getting high.

Alcohol clearly impaired the driving skills and some drivers attempted the tests at higher speeds when intoxicated.

If I remember correctly, some of the stoned drivers actually drove better during the test course, but lost their concentration on the side road back and ran off the road.  ;-)

I am not sure what k2 is but I was referring to marinal. I have no knowledge of its effects but have been told it mimicks what ever it is in weed that helps cancer patience. I would rather they just legalize the whole thing and be done with it. Tax it like booze.

K2 is the 'poor mans weed'. Its big in the midwest and is currently illeagal in many states. Basicly sold in gas stations as potpouri. The side effects are worse then week. We had a big rash of runs on K2 smokers last summer. They wig out and some died.
Never hear of marinal but I looked it up. Sounds like what I hear on the streets called THC capsuls. I seen a few ways to get THC without smoking it. Your right tho, tax it.

There are some folks that I've known pretty much my whole life that have been 'heads' since the 60s and 70s that are brain dead.. They are absolute morons and can't hold a conversation or sensible thought..  That said,, I also know more alcoholics that are pretty much the same way.. The 'heads' are happy friendly people,, can't say about the alkys..

As far as this argument goes.....tell me why alcohol is legal and pot isn't?  Memory loss? That one won't work as alcohol does that as well.

really?! maybe u forgot!!

Research clearly shows that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life. A study of 129 college students found that, among those who smoked the drug at least twenty-seven of the thirty days before being surveyed, critical skills related to attention, memory and learning were seriously diminished. A study of postal workers found that employees who tested positive for marijuana had 55% more accidents, 85% more injuries and a 75% increase in being absent from work.

In Australia, a study found that cannabis intoxication was responsible for 4.3% of driver fatalities.

Marijuana can harm a person's memory—and this impact can last for days or weeks after the immediate effects of the drug wear off. In one study, a group of heavy marijuana users were asked to recall words from a list. Their ability to correctly remember the words did not return to normal until as long as four weeks after they stopped smoking.

Students who use marijuana have lower grades and are less likely to get into college than nonsmokers. They simply do not have the same abilities to remember and organize information compared to those who do not use these substances.

The vast majority of cocaine users (99.9%) began by first using a "gateway drug" like marijuana, cigarettes or alcohol. Of course, not everyone who smokes marijuana and hashish goes on to use harder drugs. Some never do. Others quit using marijuana altogether. But some do turn to harder drugs. One study found that youth (12 to 17 years old) who use marijuana are 85 times more likely to use cocaine than kids who do not use pot, and that 60% of the kids who smoke pot before the age of 15 move on to cocaine.

Marijuana is sometimes combined with harder drugs. Joints are sometimes dipped in PCP, a powerful hallucinogen. PCP is a white powder, also available in liquid form, often used with cannabis. PCP is known for causing violent behavior and creating severe physical reactions including seizures, coma and even death.

http://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/marijuana/on-the-road-to-drug-abuses.html

The active ingredient in marijuana is delta-9-tetrohydrocannabinol, commonly referred to as THC. THC binds to and activates specific receptors in the brain, known as cannabinoid receptors  (http://www.ctprevention.org/saac/Saac_Files/fs_marijuana_brain.pdf). When these receptors are activated, THC interferes with the normal functioning of various areas of the brain, including the cerebellum, part of the brain responsible for balance, posture, and coordination of movement, and the hippocampus, which is involved with memory formation. As a result, individuals under the influence of marijuana may experience impairment in motor control and compromised short-term memory. In the intoxicated state, memory is often selectively impaired in a dose-dependent fashion similar to alcohol (Deahl 1991). Marijuana also affects receptors in the cerebral cortex that are responsible for sensory perception, which can cause users to experience altered sensory experiences in areas such as touch, sight, hearing, taste, and smell. It can cause distorted perception, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and short-term memory (http://www.nida.nih.gov/infofacts/marijuana.html).

Ok, my 2 cents on the topic of legalization.
First, all drugs should be legalized.  Period.  Legalized and taxed at an appropriate rate so as to stay competitive with the black market and, in so doing, to eliminate said market
Drug use age reduced to 15.  15 is young enough that you don't have to tell your parents about abortions, etc, so the law says it's old enough to know better.
All people jailed for selling or buying drugs should be released.  However, they have to pay back taxes on the drugs they bought or sold at the current rate.
DUI of any drug or alcohol punished by mandatory minimum of 10 years.
Same with using drugs while pregnant.
Since no one will be in jail from buying or dealing drugs, there will be plenty of room.
Mandatory drug/alcohol testing on anyone under welfare.  No reason why people should be spending their money on drugs.  Which brings up the elimination of monetary welfare.  The government will pay their living expenses and distribute free food for those on welfare.  Figure $600 for rent, any amount needed over and above is between the individual and their landlord, or they find a cheaper place to live.
Also, eliminate any Gov't sponsored substance abuse programs.  If people don't know by now that injecting, drinking, snorting, etc is bad for them, they will never get it.
Companies can choose to hire/fire anyone using drugs.  Insurance companies can choose to charge higher rates for drug users.  They already can charge smokers higher rates, so it's no different.
As I said before, all drugs become legal.  However, one caveat:  Only US made/grown drugs.  Anything from outside the country is illegal.  Think Cuban cigars and their availability in the US versus other countries.
If Canada or Mexico sees a huge jump in narcotics crossing their borders from the now "everything is legal" US, tough poopie.  They can learn to deal with the problem.
Next:  All drug companies will be shielded from lawsuits for the harm their products may cause.  This includes cigarettes. booze, and everything else.  No reason why the lawyers should make profit from this.  They will make plenty of money from the defense of DUI offenders.
I can see plenty of upside to these proposals.
First, there will be plenty of jobs available to those who choose not to do drugs, if companies choose to hire only clean people.
More healthcare will be available for the rest of us, since it's likely the US will see a HUGE jump in drug-related deaths, initially.  This could be a plus for all human-consumed resources, too.
No more "turf wars", since the black market will be mostly eliminated.
Mortuaries will make quite a bit of money, which is taxable.
There will be less of a burden on the legal system.  We can finally concentrate more efforts on real crimes like murder, rape, etc.
Huge amounts of tax money flowing to the government...

Maybe this is tongue in cheek for the most part.  Then again, maybe it isn't.

All drugs legal?   Really?   Do you realize that meth heads and crack heads don't have legitimate jobs.  They steal from you and me so they can get their next fix.  Legalize it and you encourage people to try a drug that is so devastating.  You obviously have never met a doper.  I never used marijuana but it seems to be better on people than alcohol.  But cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin, there's no good there.

text of ballot language for Colorado law.  :cooldude:

Shall there be an amendment to the Colorado constitution concerning marijuana, and, in connection therewith, providing for the regulation of marijuana; permitting a person twenty-one years of age or older to consume or possess limited amounts of marijuana; providing for the licensing of cultivation facilities, product manufacturing facilities, testing facilities, and retail stores; permitting local governments to regulate or prohibit such facilities; requiring the general assembly to enact an excise tax to be levied upon wholesale sales of marijuana; requiring that the first $40 million in revenue raised annually by such tax be credited to the public school capital construction assistance fund; and requiring the general assembly to enact legislation governing the cultivation, processing, and sale of industrial hemp?

I can see a down side to all this, there still will be a black market. we are talking about countries that if a person make $10 a night to stomp out coca paste (good money to them) there's money to be made illegally. and we are talking about GOVERNMENT regulation, they don't do anything cheaply, consider Cali with it's $400 an oz 'medical mary jane'.

How 'bout if the really destructive stuff (Coke/Crack, Heroin, Meth) were made by companies, and GIVEN to registered junkies...

The stuff is really cheap to make, the street price is just so high because it's illegal, and that way it'd be known quantity/quality with no impurities, so less chance of overdoses since the dose would be the same strength each time. The junkies would already be written off, and now they don't need to rob 9 houses a night to feed their $4,000 a day habit...
