Since we have so many deaths from cars, texting, talking on cell phones and they are not taking responsibility for this I think we need not to give out cell phones and stop texts and also to limit drivers licenses to people who have proven to have agree to background checks, sobriety tests and drugs tests on a weekly basis. Also I support legislation that if you are drunk or on drugs and kill someone you get the death penalty along with confiscation of all your possessions to help pay for the families of the one that you took a life for. I am not really for this but the same arguement can  be made for these kind of things that result in more deaths than guns ever do.

Two lessons can be learned from this tragedy.  First, it is a fact that drinking, drug, texting, cell phone rights such as we enjoy will result in a higher level of collision deaths, accidental and planned, than in a country where these are banned.

If the drivers lobbies do not begin to support legislation that controls access to drugs, texting, cell phones by those that should not have them, then there will be a far larger backlash that may result in much more onerous driver control laws.

There is a lot of middle ground between doing absolutely nothing to try and control drunk texting and cell phone deaths, and implementing a ban.  A proactive move by drivers to "clean up their own" would go a long way to heading off more onerous and stringent driver laws.

IMHO our government needs enforce the laws that we have already.  Jail criminals, don't be sending the criminals out early "to make room".
Too many people are concerned with the rights of the criminals than the rights of the victims.
The the leaders of our country, the bankers and brokers, oil tzars and businessmen and women break the laws and put our country in grave danger.
Gang bangers, pimps, drug dealers, drunk drivers, little kids are being shot in drive byes, child molesters are all on the streets looking for victims and killing people day after day after day.
   Where's the outrage!!
Enforce the laws we have, go after the criminals, jail them, punish them, don't coddle them, don't try to rehabilitate them and make them serve their entire sentence.
Get the criminals off the streets. It's a no brainer.
THAT will make the streets safer!!

So now we've shown every freak and terrorist on the planet that the best armed nation on the face of the earth leaves it's schools and children undefended. In fact, our teachers, many of whom know firearms inside and out are banned from possessing the tools to defend our children. What kind of defense is huddling in a corner and waiting to be shot? How many of those surviving kids will be damaged for life because they were huddling in corners or bathrooms knowing their teachers could not defend them?

Our school teachers, principles, janitors and maintenance workers who can carry responsibly need to be allowed and encouraged to do so right now. Having a few national guard members armed and ready in the schools wouldn't be a bad idea too. The kids need to see and know that they will be protected. And, all the potential mass killers out there need to see it and know it too.

American citizens are the largest armed force on the face of the earth. I hope that someone, somewhere is looking at which foreign governments, political groups or terrorist groups would most benefit from an America which disarms it's self and then looking to see if some of these crazies are being influenced by them.

And last, when one of these nut jobs can be taken alive, they need to be declared terrorists and turned over to one of our waterboarding crews. I have little doubt they will find out if it's just random crazies or something more. And, you can be sure, worrying about that possible outcome would cause some of these soulless cowards to stay home.

But right now, immediately, we need to give the people we trust with our kids the ability to defend them.

WTF does Obama Have to do with some sicko going out and killing a bunch of people? Will you people get over it?

It has to do with the 2nd amendment existing to protect the rest of our Constitutional rights, and the Obummer goose-stepping all over the Constitution already.  You're not aware of this?  Wake up.  Read the news.  There is already an obvious need to keep our guns because if the Obummer continues on the path he's on, we may very well have to remove him from office - forcibly if necessary, and that is in jeopardy if this incident results in us losing such absolute power in the hands of the people.  Yeah get over it.  Wake up pal.  You have the freedom you do because of guarantees like the 2nd amendment.  And incidents like this add ammo to the liberals agenda to give all power to the govt and none for the people.  And with the 2nd Amendment gone - what's next - the First Amendment?  Why not?  Let's just go ahead and call the Constitution a "Living Document" and revise it willy-nilly.  Oh wait, the liberals are already calling it that, advocating easy mods to our fundamental definition of The United States.

Sorry, but it bothers me that we're lacking some healthy level of respect for office of the President in this forum, like calling him Obummer. He is the elected President, and you can disagree with him, I have no problem with that. But he happens to be elected by the people, so let's treat that office with some respect.

I agree with Mark, who cares what his reasons or motive were, he's a worm in the head weaselboy coward who should have been drowned at birth.  Absent any evidence so far of any political or other wacky agenda (it's early yet), it has to be lunacy of some sort or another.  It's already leaking out he was a quiet and nervous loner with no friends (but did well in school), who may have had personality disorder or some form of autism (Asperger's).  Living alone with mom, who he kills first, his brother hasn't seen him since 2110 (why?) .... and they are saying his girl friend is missing, but I would not think he would have one.

But to understand what happened to him might deflect some of the full assault on the 2d amendment to come.  I am betting there are some medical records (psychiatric) that will prove interesting.  His mom would have the best evidence of his psyche, probably saw the coming explosion (too late, or not?), and did not put her guns and ammo beyond his reach, but will never testify.

Laws will never fix sanity, and with millions walking the planet, a certain percentage are guaranteed to be defective and dangerous units. I think security in our schools is now a necessity, with all we spend on education (and doing poorly at it), armed men and machines are just going to have to be added to the expense.  I have no problem with teachers, custodians, administrators doing the job, if they are trained (and vetted) and competent.  Schools are becoming the target of opportunity in a clear copy-cat fashion.  But they are going to have to be better than TSA, by a long shot!!!

But what has me more concerned and upset than anything is ..... how do you stand in front of a room full of kindergardners and shoot them one by one?  What could make you do that?  (What's next, a maternity ward?)

I want to read the medical records, and then I have some questions.

Obama's administration is responsible for killing of at least one American law enforcement officer and a bunch of Mexican LEO's and civilians through the fast and furious thing. You remember, when his people sent a bunch of semi-autos to Mexico to be used in crime and traced back to the US to help his anti-gun efforts in the states.

Give it a week or two and he will try to use a presidential decree to declare semi-autos are class 3 weapons and can not be owned by the general public. That would allow him to get around congress. Hope I'm wrong  but some of his minions just had a meeting with the ATF a few weeks ago. Some in the firearms community were saying that was their plan then. Like I say, I'm hoping they were wrong and I am wrong but it wouldn't surprise me to see it fall out this way.

I have commented before in relation to comparing gun control in the USA & Australia.
What a sad day this is.
If gun control happened in the USA people seem to want to blame the President.
I thought the laws of the land were set by the peoples elected representatives after much discussion & not just the passion of the moment.
Doesnt it say something when you have to go through a identification process to gain access to a school.
It is really the bottom when it is suggested that teachers be armed to protect the students.
Something isnt just right with the existing system.
Don ( Aussie )

It is society that has changed, and no one wants to admit it.

I graduated HS in 1972.  Rural North Dakota.  A number of us carried pocket knives all day in school.  Nobody complained.  Most of us had guns in our vehicles in the school parking lot.  In fact, at lunch, we would go out and compare them, and their ammo!  Teachers went with us to look at them too!  No problem, and no ever thought they were a threat.

At college, a number of us kept guns in our dorm room closets.  Ammo with them.  We hunted deer during season, and had shotguns for waterfowl hunting too.  No problem.

It is society that has changed.  The liberal progressives have been making us over, changing society to their liking.  Personal responsibility has gone out the window.

The office of the President has not been respected by the ones who won and hold the office and some have showed contempt. So explain to me how this bad example is supposed to be honored by those not holding the office, but still hope in that office?

Back to the original topic... More laws will help how? The following laws were already broken in this incident, that I can think of off the top of my head:

-It was illegal for someone under 21 (The shooter was 20) to be in possession of a handgun.
-It was illegal for the owner of the handguns to leave them somewhere that someone under 21 would have access to them.
-It was illegal for the perp to bring said handguns in to a school.
-And most surprising of all, it's illegal to shoot kids (And teachers).

So, making more things illegal would help... how?

And don't misunderestimate me. I understand the pain, the anger, the desire to "do something." I hugged my kids extra hard last night. But, tie this incident to this quote from Obama's former chief of staff to the situation at hand, and you might understand our fears:

Like a lot of folks, I've been pretty well glued to news reports the past two days.  A few comments stood out for me.

From a psychologist:  "I heard it said that evil visited this town.  We've got to stop all this talk of evil and call it what it is.  Mental illness ..."

You know, I'm not I highly educated man (thank God) but I've come to believe that it's possible for some people to be educated well beyond their intelligence.  I can accept that someone wants to explain by mental illness, drugs, or a really poor view of reality how such evil things can happen, but to deny that it is evil to slaughter twenty little children is simply beyond my comprehension.  This man is not part of the solution.  He's part of the problem.

From a ex-New York policeman:  "We have to do something and one thing we must do is repeal these gun free school zones ..."

Now here's a man who understands.  He went on to expound on the need for people in the schools to be able to defend themselves and the children when something like this happens.

From the interviewer responding to the ex-policeman: "Some people will find your solution strange ... Do you think these people (in the schools) should have access to the same kind of ammunition that allowed this shooter to kill twenty-six people in three minutes?"

Now here is an uninformed babbler.  Two handguns, a supply of twenty-two long rifle rounds, and a congestion of unarmed children is more than adequate to result in twenty-six deaths.

Another interviewer to retired police detective:  "How well trained did he have to be to kill that many people in three minutes?"

Intelligent response:  "Not that well.  They were sitting ducks ..."

There's a lot of idiocy wallowing around in the media right now.

blastedbugler

I have been following the debate on TV as well as this forum, as it is world news.
A conflict of views.
A statement I heard rung true " We are not at war with each other so why do we need these high powered military style weapons and rifles in the community ".
In 1996, Australia banned this style of weapon & in 16 years we have not had a mass killing.
I believe that what is needed is control of weapons.
Control is different to no guns, which seems to the belief if the anti gun lobby has it's way.
Comment is made in the forum about the 22 children attacked by a klnife in China.
It is not mentioned that no children died.
Many of the children in this latest attack were shot more than once.

Don, I'm sure it's difficult for an Australian to understand, but our founding fathers in their wisdom declared that the populace of the country needed to be prepared to be at war with each other although that state may not always, or ever, exist.  Their belief is that that preparation is precisely what ensures that the government remains the servant rather than the master of the people.

As to military style weapons, it is precisely military style weapons that the founding fathers had in mind when they articulated the right to bear arms.

I'm pleased for you that Australia hasn't suffered any mass killings.  Neither have most of the fifty United States.  At the risk of being offensive, I, for one, would not be ready to trade what we have for what you have even to guarantee the avoidance of the possibility of future mass killings.

I believe that this morning a bill was signed into law in MI that will allow CCW holders to carry in schools and churches in MI IF they take additional training.  I don't know all the details nor am I positive this has passed.

I did hear that the additional training consisted of firing an additional 94 rounds and I believe a couple more hours of instruction.  When I took my CCW training I thought it was a joke.  I was a military policeman for 2.5 years and open carried a .45 on duty (because they don't make a .46).  All you vets are probably familiar with the clearing barrels before entering barracks and mess halls.   I was always amazed by the number of un-intended discharges at those things.

Governor Synder has not signed that bill as of friday night.
In MI you can open carry your handgun into schools and churches. So i is almost a moot point.

In Aussie I dont even know anyone who has an illegial weapon or even anyone who has a permit for one.

I do not think I have ever seen an illegial weapon either!  How do you get a permit for an illegial weapon?  Is that like a permit to commit bank robbery?

74 and never seen a pistol?  Wow.

Very few outside of the US can understand how and why we got our constitution.  We fought and died for it.  From the same country that GAVE you your independence.

We believe, at least we used to, that ALL the power belongs to the people, and we let the gov't have a little.
Almost NO other countries use that as a basis of their country.

The 2nd Amendment, as Willow notes, was put there to defend ALL the other rights.  Without it, ALL the other rights are just words on a piece of paper.

It was put there, so that "The People" could overthrow ANY gov't that got too powerful, thus returning the power to the people.

Many get upset when you say the 2nd Amendment is there to overthrow the gov't, but that is what it is there for.

If you take away weapons, that becomes impossible.

I realize you do not understand this, and I understand!

There is another reason our forefathers gave us the right to bare arms.
The reason is so that people have some resource to protect themselves from their own government.
We all remember when the colonies stood up to their government. That is what gave us the country we live in now. If our forefathers didn't have the guns they had where would we be today?

Granted.  What I said was not meant to be condescending, but just an acknowledgement of what it is.

I've seen a lot of weapons.  I've been trained to use the M-14, M1, M-16 and .45 ACP.  I owned and/or fired black powder rifles various shotguns, and .38 caliber revolver, oh, and .22 caliber weapons.  I've enjoyed most of my experiences with firearms and have never been seriously tempted to shoot any innocent civilians.  The operative term here is innocent.  ;)

Again, not to be condescending, but just to say how it is, I do not envy you your innocence.

My perspective is that a lot fewer school children are killed by people with guns than by improper use of automobiles.  Where's the outrage over the improper use of automobiles?  Where are the protections?

We live in very different societys I guess. And even here in the states, social norms vary hugely between states.

Today I've been in a movie theater, two restaurants, a book store, and a sporting goods store. And I'm sure than in every one of those places as least one out of every 20 or 30 people was legally carrying a handgun. Considering recent events, probably more than that.

My boys each received their first firearms by the time they were 12 or 13. Pellet guns came at least 6 years before that. I can not remember when I first fired a gun nor can I remember a "before I first fired a gun" point in time. Out of my 4 kids, only by daughter can remember the first time she fired a gun. Like me, the boys have just always shot and can't remember a time when they hadn't. My three oldest grandsons have their own rifles. One has already taken both deer and turkey with a firearm. Non of them are old enough to drive.

My Mom was one of the best shots with a 22 rifle I've known and held the annual family reunion trophy for many years.

Neither my wife nor myself have any family members, siblings, aunts, uncles or whatever that I can think of who aren't gun owners. I'm not sure that we have any that don't own all three varieties, as in rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Firearms ownership is one of the defining American rights and traits. I pray I never live long enough to see that change. It's who we are.

Shot my first gun when I was about 6 or 7. My dad squatted behind me and backed me up while I stood. Together we shot his double barrel 12-gage Stevens. To me that thing was a cannon and I was forever smitten. I grew up with guns, as did everyone else I knew, but there was an unspoken respect for guns. You didn't point them at anything you didn't intend to shoot and you didn't "play" with them. It was a different time and a different mindset. It seems like (some) kids today look at guns/life like a video game...you shoot em up and if you get killed, you get to start over.

Time to arm "some" teachers and school staff, (and properly train them). I heard on the news that he started shooting in the office during morning announcements and everyone heard it. Maybe a few armed school staff would have saved 20 kids today.....

Teachers need to be armed. It's sad to say, but it's true. It should be a prerequisite to teaching, at least at the elementary and secondary level. They should be trained on how to respond with force in their environment. All schools should have armed security, locked doors with cameras. Doors should be opened by security people at the doors, not buzzed open by office staff. This is the world we live in. The sooner we acknowledge that the better off we will be. I find it sad how the LEO show up in force, after the fact. What a joke, stalking around with guns drawn, after all the damage has been done. Once we have procedures in place that will truly nullify these things happening, then we can turn our efforts to figuring out why.
My sentiments exactly.  Security carrying and at least one other school employee teacher etc. as a backup armed.  Sad but needs to be done.

Can't say I disagree, but we have school systems where the teachers and administrators can't even maintain discipline with the students in their classrooms because our society says they can't hardly touch a child without fear of repercussions.  Crazy world we live in.

My perspective is that a lot fewer school children are killed by people with guns than by improper use of automobiles.  Where's the outrage over the improper use of automobiles?  Where are the protections?

I think cause driving is a privalige and gun ownership is a right. I think more people go after rights then privaliges.

Girl raised in Winnipeg among shooting victims.

Ana Marquez-Greene, 6, and her older brother Isaiah attended Linden Christian School in Linden Woods, before moving with their parents to Newtown in July and enrolling at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the fall. Both children were inside the school when the shooter opened fire.
Ana was among the 20 children killed in the mass shooting. Her brother, reportedly a Grade 3 student, escaped without physical harm.

And i don't need anyone trying to tell me who to respect and who not to. RIDE SAFE.

Respecting the office is all I was saying, I don't give a rats who you respect or who you don't.

Considering the current POS that holds that office, NO RESPECT is due.

RESPECT IS EARNED and IS GIVEN........

He hasn't done the first and He doesn't do the latter.

how the heck does a horrible tragedy with some deranged person killing young children degenerate to you calling the president a POS.  you uncaring bastard are the POS.

A couple ounces of lead versus a couple tons of steel, the result is the same.  Dead is Dead and the people who cause it are both charged with homicide.

Frye, I picked up up that Smith today at our best local range (sweet).  A dozen guys were standing around outside talking before it opened, and I heard exactly the same thing suggested as a possible tactic.  I keep up with NRA-ILA and most other stuff pretty regularly, and I have never heard of this discussed before.  Seems to me NFA is pretty well settled and it would be hard to just add a whole new class of firearms to it........... but who knows what this bastard will do, along with his hip pocket buddy Holder.

The thing I keep thinking about is that by the time it would make it to the supreme court for a ruling it might be "his supreme court".
Glad you got the Smith, it looks like a great gun. I just bought my first Smith this fall. It's a camo semi-auto 22 pistol. Wasn't expensive and it's pretty impressive to shoot. Hasn't had a jam yet and it's more accurate than my old Ruger standard auto. Not a light gun though.

When they said this kid was Aspergers, my antenna went up. My son is diagnosed Aspergers. It is a terrible disorder and very frustrating. More times than not, these kids are not just smart but boarder line genius. However, they have very little social skills which leads to their frustration and ultimately to their acting out. When they do act out, it is usually without regard to anyone or anything...they just want to be heard...NOW!. This kid was heard. However, with proper medication and interaction, love and guidance, they can be an awesome asset. We had a difficult time with my son when he was growing up, but now he's working and going to college. He has a good heart, a good sense of humor and his insight and perspective are often profound.
