1242 in one stint.  Don't remember the hours, don't really care.   Had some place I needed to be and started off a long ways from it.  Got that and glad I did but, doubt I'd do it again without a really good reason.   We do what we must, it all depends on the motivation.   I couldn't care less about setting any long distane or Iron Butt records but, I will get to where I need to be, one way or another.

627 miles from Frisco, CO (Inzane VI) to Billings, MT.  What was tougher, however, was when I rode from North Webster, IN, to Minneapolis, MN, 565 miles, on my '81 Honda CM400T.  That's right, 8-9 hours saddle time at 5500-6500 RPM without a throttle lock.  To give my right hand a break, occasionally I would hold the throttle with my left hand, which makes steering a motorcycle counter-intuitive.  I can't remember the North Webster girl's name, but she had beautiful brown eyes.

1105 miles on a Iron Butt ride...I gues just so you can say you did it...it has no purpose....I do 810 mile days when ever I go see my Mother!!! several times a year...

When I was about 20 I went on a trip to Jamaica with my church youth group. I met a couple of girls there who were part of a group from Indiana. One was from N. Webster, the other from Warsaw, and we kept in touch via letters. The next summer I wanted to go on a motorcycle trip, needed a destination, and going to Indiana to visit these girls was about the right distance for the time I had.  I don't recall seeing Oprah, but I'm not sure if she was internationally famous then, and I'm not all that motivated to research her history right now.

1001 miles coming home from a trip to AZ.  The last leg....Santa Rosa, NM to Hiawatha, IA.  It was unplanned, just anxious to get home so no Iron Butt cert.

928 miles came home to Altoona, IA from Johnson City (first IZ that was held there) only stopping for gas.

870 miles from Frisco, CO to Altoona, IA that Blackdog mentioned above.  Was almost delirious by the time we got to my place because of the Heat. 

630 miles from Zanesville, OH to Hiawatha, IA.

I'm not fond of the long distance rides but sometimes it is necessary.

I've done 700-750 miles in a day several times, much more  than that and the fun of riding goes away for me.

From El Paso, Tx to Panama Beach, FL.  Year was 1951, no I/S's, and on a Snortin Norton.

I was at my Uncle's house in Texas, and thought I could ride it in a day.    I was transferred over there to assist on Guard Duty for 90 days, they called it TAD, (Temporary Additional Duty).

I don't think I rode the bike for the next 45 days, so my butt coould heal up.

Took 3 days to ride the same distance back, then 3 more days to San Francisco Supply Depot @ 100 Harrison, SF, CA.

I think the last ride of any distance was after leaving Inzane in Johnson City at 11:00am and riding to the west side of Land Between The Lakes, SE of Padukah. The mileage was around 420, had a late start and some rain along the way slowed me down a bit. Years ago, a 700 mile day was the norm. Now, I'm happy to get home after riding in excess of a couple hundred miles when meeting some of the Fla. troupe for lunch. With the I/S tank giving me over 200 miles at a time, I have to plan a stop just to stretch the legs and unkink those joints. Funny....don't recall having to do that just 20 yrs. ago!  But the good part; like many of you, I'm still throwing a leg over regardless of the disance covered. To me, it's the trip....not the destination.

Sad to say I've only broken the 500 mile mark one time. Got about 525
or so. But, in my defense, that day did include 3 passes over the Tail
of the Dragon!! I should almost double that one day this summer if I get
to do my Myrtle Beach pancake/t-shirt/ice cream ride.Time will tell!!

I've gone over the 1K mark in a day twice, the longest being San Diego to Steamboat Springs @1050 miles. Left before dawn to beat the desert heat, and arrived while it was still light. The other time I took a circuitous route form SD to Park City, Utah, heading north first on 395 and then east across Nevada. That was just over 1K. Saw wild horses on that trip. I've done 700-850 miles in a day a lot of times. In the west it's definitely easier to rack up these miles due to the vast expanses of open land out here.

Boy, you guys are some ridin' sons of guns.  I did 800 one day x-country back in '71 on a Triumph. I did 1400+ in a Mini-Cooper S a year later, but, cars don't count. I wouldn't consider any long distances today, my butt is too skinny.

Several 4-450, & approximately 780 3 years ago . Was going to Rapid City to look at a gun and do a 1500 m iron butt, but a HD friend wanted to come along so I said we don't have nothing to prove so we left Eau Claire Wi. 702m & 12 hr. To Sturgess  museum then back to Rapid City to look at the gun and was fun in by the food at the truck stop. Next day mayby 620 home.

655 miles from Key West to home. By far the worst and most torturous ride of my life. I was on a Honda Shadow with no windshield. The ergonomics of this bike were horrible, might be ok for local riding but not for the open road. By the time i got homes my neck muscles were burning like fire and the rest of me was so sore I could hardly get off the bike. I dumped it for a Goldwing shortly after that ride, what a difference that made.

The week after I graduated from college, I took a road trip on my new '75 750 Kb to Canada.  Half way through the trip I called home to check in and my Mom told me I had the interview I had been hoping for, SO.  1200 miles back to Northern Indiana on what I thought at the time was a big bike.  I was beat to death.  Had a lousy interview and didn't get the job.  Should have kept riding around Canada for the week instead.

My first trip East to Mom's I was going to try an Iron Butt. No planning or organization, just ride. Starting out at 4:00am I got from Edmonton, Alberta to Kenora, Ontario in 19.5 hours. Speedo said 950 miles, the map said lots of curves coming, the time said 11:00pm (crosse 2 time zones) and the sky said rain. The next day took 12 hours to get to Thunder Bay, a 5 hour trip, because I stopped for a nap at every picknic area I came across.

I'll do an Iron Butt someday, but with more planning...

I did ride once a little over 1900 miles without a rest stop, but that took more than twenty-four hours.  My Standard rolled over 100,000 on that trip.

As for the enjoyment, not every moment of long distance riding is completely pleasurable but there is a great deal of satisfaction in completing something that is not easy to do.  Yes, I enjoy it.

Squealy and I did 1,081 on Thursday, and 1,097 on Sat/Sun each in less than 24 hours.

I wouldn't like riding that distance alone.  I don't like myself THAT much. 

We're already talking about doing a 1500 miler in 36 hours.  That would be easy I think. 

The new saddles made the physical part EASY.  The weather was our thorn.

Wow, had to think back to 1975, when I took my Kawasaki 175cc from Havre, Montana to Good God Great Falls, Montana and back on a cold April day.  Going south the ride was good and somewhat warm, but on the return a Cold Front moved in and I was bucking Cold Canadian winds coming down from the Frozen Tundra of Alberta.  About 300 miles.

Now I've added another MC to my Fleet, a Yamaha TW200 with extra fat rear tire and can't wait till next Winter to test it out in 2-5 inches of snow.

Around 500 on my Honda Shadow that was sacrificed to ride the Fat Lady (i needed a down payment).

Rode from my parents' place to Yuba City, CA.


Another long ride was from here to Roseburg, OR via Crater Lake. My stepson called me on Friday, asked me to be at his graduation on Sunday... Then I rode back home after the ceremony, taking another route. The things a parent will do for their kids at the drop of a hat!

If you did it in 24 hours you would have had to average just under 71mph and if you had documented that ride you would be a god in the Long Distance Riding community. They would erect a statue in your honor.
