But your bike is probably paid for and his being 3x the price about is making payments on most likely?  I usually find whomever gets the jump usually wins the race if shorter race since it doesn't take long to get to 85 mph.  Now saying 'he walked away from me'  might be exaggerated??  

I have a guy at work (and married a gal at same work area probably to help him finance it)  a new HD guessing 16-19K who does mostly bar hopping on bike doesn't look very big for a HD either.  He keeps knocking down my Honda I'd love to shut him up for a change as well.  Basically, he rides his HD not for joy riding, but to drive on weekends from bar to bar although longer distances apart usually, or so he says.  I always laugh when I see his rear seat of his HD being really tiny about 8" wide is all  and short and the his wife who works with us has a huge barn door sticking out each side of the seat - eek!  Anyways,  I wouldn't mind us leaving together for a change and tempt fate!

My HD neighbor is probably one of the worst bragging about HD.  He says this and that about his mods and I let it go in 1 ear and out the other.  One thing we can both agree on is he was at least honest and told me upfront the stock 88 motor is a pooch and needs upgrades to make it go fast.  He told me once how much he spent but really cannot remember guessing he said like 8-9K on pipes and performance mods to beef it up to a 95/96 (?) motor (probably mostly labor costs).  Heck, he spent more on mods than I did on my entire Valkyrie.  Whatever floats his boat.

Most HD guys I know are only bar hoppers.  Although, that goes for most guys I know that drive other brands as well.  Hard to find guys that will take a long drive.  Most only want to go for the afternoon.

  Posers, weekend warriors, trailer queens, they all crack me up! I rode Harleys for years and know what, I like em. But, I'm not brand specific and my head still fits thru the door. I am a "brand changer" and have owned every kinda bike I can think of, ask my wife. In my garage now is a Valk and a Triumph Rocket III. The Valk stays till I vapor lock, The Triumph, well can go.  They are both paid for but I'm thinking out of the  box again.
  Would like to look at Indian, little nervous bout that though with some of hte past problems. People think Harleys are expensive, look at an Indian!? Indian prices blow Harleys away. My point being, screw em, who cares what anyone thinks. This is about what I want not someone else.

Harley hp can be bumped up with enough dollars. By putting a Stage 4 kit on the 103 engine and other mods, somewhere around $5-6k worth of work and parts,  they will dyno between 100 to 110 hp. That's quite a step up from the stock 60-70 hp and yes, they will move on down the road. A friend that I ride with has done this on his new 2013 Street Glide.

Couple of years ago at a rally a friend of mine who rides a Hardley had his battery go dead as we were about to go out to dinner. He had his girlfriend with him and we decided we would go ahead and go to dinner and pick him up a battery on the way back. He jumped on behind one of my friends and she got on behind me. On the way back from dinner she leaned up and said "wow, this is the smoothest bike I have ever been on! I can't even tell when you shift"!. I told her to not tell her boyfriend that as he would not appreciate it,,  but I did.

I've always liked the look of Harleys but Honda fits my budget much better and besides, I have no issues with the lines of a fine Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, or Suzuki motorcycle. The fact is, if I had the money, I'd probably have a Valkyrie, a Kawasaki Vulcan 1700, a Suzuki C90T, a Yamaha Royal Star Venture, a Harley Road King, and an Indian Chief all sitting in my garage. Maybe a Triumph Rocket as well. Oh yeah, and I'd be keeping my ACE too. And, I'd be retired because with that much money it wouldn't make sense to not be and with that many bikes I'd have to be retired to be able to give any of them the riding time they deserve. 

My preference is Honda but I like 'em all.

Yup, same here... and if the Valk isn't fast enough I'll hop on the spousal unit's ST1300...

But really, for the price of just a few of the mods made to a Harley to make it go that fast, you could buy a REAL sport bike that would spank (almost) every one of our bikes, if speed was the be all end all...

i have always believed that if you leave it stock it will last you a long time,, applies to any bike or car..when you stat making mods you are asking for oil leaks and other problems...
my harley is unfortunately, with the new epa guidelines in place, Harley had to really lean the new 96ci motors down. This robbed them of horsepower and torque. Harley won't even tell you the hp rating. I dyno'd my new '13 Ultra with the 96ci motor. In it's stock configuration, it produced 68 horsepower ( less than my TC88CI ). I changed out the stock mufflers to a set of Pythons, added a screaming eagle stage 1 kit, and a race tuner, then I set it up on the dyno and dialed it in, this setup gave me 23 more horsepower and brought the torque up to 90 ft pounds. It also let the engine run much cooler. After that I added an oil cooler and synthetic oil. Funny, but switching to synthetic picked up 2 more horsepower!!
i believe my bike will run with my old Valk, maybe not who knows,,i loved my Valk and I love my Harley,,i had 3 Valks and 3 Harleys,, now on my 4th Harley..

Anytime that you can reduce friction inside the engine, you'll get more HP to the rear tire.

The hp on a Harley don't mean too much, it is that damn torque on that twin that kicks your ass, especially from light to light.

Last week I U Tubed a search for Harley Dyno run. I found one where the owners were exstatic after the run because their 103 Eagle (stage 4) put out 83 HP at the rear wheel. My CA Valk stock has 88 HP and runs on regular. HD my butt!!

Am pretty sure I read somwhere and not long ago that the production horsepower stats for the Harley 103Cu. In engine is in the neighborhood of 68hp at the rear wheel.

I have a few friends that ride Harleys. I enjoy riding with them because after all the $$$$ they sink into there bikes for more HP I still out run them. My bike is not stock by no means. Done some head and carb work on her and she is putting 107 at the back wheel ( I have the dyno sheet to prove it ) invested about $2000 in the work I have done and I am happy with the results. There are a few Harleys that I would own if I could afford it. I will never sell my Valkyrie, it is a head turner and a asphalt eater.

Have 2 Valks and a Harley..... Like 'em ALL!!!!  Did some engine work to the Harley when I got it to make twisting the throttle more than just a volume control.... It couldn't get out of it's own way.  Flamingobabe said"  You need to fix that"... so I did.  Gotta keep Momma happy!
 The HD runs 97 hp and 98 foot pounds on the dyno.. runs pretty good, not a drag bike by any means....kept the compression  just above stock to get some life out of it.....bored to 95 from 88 ci, head work port and flowed, bigger valves tighter springs. Installed a Power Commander 3 to dial in the air/fuel and timing.   Sure runs cooler!!!!  Put a cam in it that comes on at around 2700 rpm.  2 into 1 pipes bumped the torque 10 lbs.  The bike cruises at 2800 rpm at 75 mph per gps... that would be 80 on the speedo... bout the same speedo error as the Valk.  But that lets me cruise in the cam's powerband, and it jumps to 115 mph REAL quick.  45 mpg at 80 mph speedo 2 up... gets 50mpg at 70 mph speedo 2 up.... It REALLY likes to run at 80 mph indicated on the speedo.

The engine mods cost me less than most folks add in chrome to the bikes.....

I'm already as fast as my wallet will allow, I could go faster but, I ain't borrowing money just to impress the HD folks, don't care.  In fact, they're the ones that come over and scope out my Valkyrie, they're the ones I see eyeing her out in the parking lot at work.   She's a looker, no doubt about it.  She'll also stay ahead or with just about anything on the road.   Honestly, she's got more guts than I do.   She's never let me down and I'm the one that always saying slow down old girl.    As I've said before, I don't care what you ride but, there's only two kinds of people I won't ride with, LOUD and STUPID.    They seem to ride together a bunch though.

 I had my 97 with Vikings pipes,6 degree wheel and IS carb springs dynoed last summer. Made 93 HP at the rear wheel. I was hoping for higher. Oh well. Guys at Viking said the pipes would be good for 10% HP gain. I guess they lied. What really sucks is my brother had his dynoed right after mine. 97 with 6 degree and IS springs,stock pipes. Made the same HP in fact it was .3 HP higher than mine. So a stock 97 makes about 93 or so HP at the wheel......

I have run a few HDs with mine. Have beaten every one of them. I have not run one of the new 103s or 110s. But being my bike is 16 years old I would say that being able to hold its own against newer HDs is good. I even ran one of those Big Dog type choppers once. Got a crappy start so I was behind but he never pulled any farther away from me. If I had left with him I would have been een with him.

6 TW causes a loss of max HP.

In times past I've challenged several harley boys to a 1/4 mile
or top end race.....never had a taker. I've ALWAYS accepted
any challenge from them....ALWAYS won. Sometimes by a little,
sometimes by a lot. A couple of times I won by so much I genuinely
felt sorry for them. Only close call I had was with a chopper-type.
Didn't get to see what it was. He was behind me at a red light. We
were turning left. As soon as we completed the turn he romped on
it (one of those 'loud pipes save lives' idiots).So, he had the jump
on me....as soon as I hit third I went WOT....never saw him in
my mirror and his front tire never came up beside me. After about
300 yds or so my lane was 'right turn only' so I backed off. Some
people would call it a draw, but remember, he had the jump on me,
which is like having a head start. I don't race any more...I just ride.
(But I doubt I'd back down from a challenge....depending on my mood)

I personally do it all the time.  There is a guy at work that has one of the new 110's.  It looks black and silver from a distance, but when you get up close, it is really metallic dark green in the sun.  It is one of those with the fixed faring and dual headlights (a mix of projection and LED).  I tell him that his bike looks good all the time.  He is a buddy of mine, been working with him for about 20 years.  Way cool bike, but a little too rich for my blood.

As I've mentioned several times here, a forum such as this is NOT where
I excel at making my point. My intent was NOT to imply that all people
with loud pipes are idiots, or even those that believe loud pipes make
them safer. My meaning was that he had obnoxiously loud exhaust pipes
and was PROBABLY one of those "bar-hopper, wear all the logo'd gear, ride
20 miles a week (if there's not a cloud anywhere in sight), brag about how
much he spent on this or that, and how you're not a real biker if you do
or say anything that differs with his opinion". I only guessed this way because
I saw him pull out of the local (now defunct) bike night watering hole where
that particular type seem to congregate. I knew several people that tried
going there and heard their reports. Not a place I'd like to visit.

Well Carl,
I also hope to ride with you some day but, maybe I should explain my statement.   I believe stupid to be obvious, (don't think you're in that group).   Stupid people get themselves and others hurt and killed.   After making it this far in life with only minor injuries, I'd prefer to avoid falling down as much as possible.   

Now as to loud, I'm not one of those folks that think LOUD saves lives but for a few exceptions.   I was a Marine Infantryman, then an Army Artillery Officer, then onto R/W flight school.   Did that for a few years and (in the Army's infinate wisdom) went to Maintenance Test Pilot School.    These occupations combined with my other activities have left me with a dramatic hearing loss.    For a long time I was the supervisor on a Corrugator (Corrugated Box Industry), that machine ran at a constant 150 to 175 decibels constantly.   Hearing protection did not suffice.  The noise would vibrate through your skull.    Few occupations are as loud and dangerous/injurious to us.   When next we meet, say something to me in a crowded semi-noisy room and see if I even acknowledge you.  Unless I'm looking at you, I'll never know you were speaking to me.    My closest and longest friend rides an HD with some very loud pipes.   When we ride together, I'm either in front or way back.  His exhaust pipes are so loud, I can't be near him when we ride.   So, I'll caveat that and say, I ride a safe hearing distance from loud.   Nothing personal, I just hate the look my wife gives me when I say, "Huh, what'd you say?"   

So, don't take this personally, I'm just try'n to keep what little hearing I have left.   We'll ride, I'll just be back a ways.
