Words from his mouth in March 2006

http://sessions.house.gov/index.cfm?p=obama-s-congressional-record

"Mr. President, I rise today to talk about America's debt problem. The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government's reckless fiscal policies. Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is 'trillion' with a 'T.' That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President's budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

"And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on. Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America's priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans—a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies.

"Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit." –Senator Barack Obama (March 16, 2006)

His words yesterday

"Now, this debt ceiling -- I just want to remind people in case you haven't been keeping up -- raising the debt ceiling, which has been done over a hundred times, does not increase our debt; it does not somehow promote profligacy.  All it does is it says you got to pay the bills that you've already racked up, Congress.  It's a basic function of making sure that the full faith and credit of the United States is preserved."

"It's always a tough vote because the average person thinks raising the debt ceiling must mean that we're running up our debt, so people don't like to vote on it, and, typically, there's some gamesmanship in terms of making the President's party shoulder the burden of raising the -- taking the vote."

Patrick

Some folks don't pay attention in the first place. Others don't remember. Some will not believe those statements at all. Still others just don't care.
It just amazes me how quickly people forget.

WayneH

The debt ceiling legislation is unconstitutional anyway.  The 14th amendment was passed precisely to stop Congresspersons opposed to certain payments from trying to block them after they had been passed.

Quote14th Amendment - Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

The tea party rascals ought to be charged with treason.  Unable to get their way through a democratic legislative process, they resort to threatening the entire country, its economic well being, its credit rating, and its standing in the world.

Yes, there is a debt problem.  Making it worse by shutting down the government is not the answer.

But really, do you have a point or are you just once again ranting about a President you clearly don't like?

"But really, do you have a point or are you just once again ranting about a President you clearly don't like?"

Wayne, to me his point is rather clear; this president contradicts himself, time and time again. And no, he's not the first to do so, but I feel as a country we're paying a huge price for his personal European based ideology/agenda. For me, as with many others that don't like the man, it has nothing to do with his color or country of origin. It has everything to do with his Chicago style politics and what's perceived as a general dishonesty.

Another little item called Sequester comes to mind. I haven't spent too much time looking for it, but distinctly remember it being brought up during one of the debates. When it was tossed in his direction, his answer was "not going to happen, not on my watch."  Selective memory is quite convenient in politics it would seem, regardless of affiliation.

You realize that when you come into office with an annual deficit of over 1 trillion dollars a year, that after 5 years your debt will increase by over 5 trillion unless there is cooperation in the congress on cutting back spending and increasing revenue.  That's not including any additional spending.  Exactly how much cooperation on that is there in the Congress?  How did we arrive at an annual deficit so high?  Congress voting for spending, as well as voting for reducing revenue through tax breaks, all while our economy tanked further reducing revenue.

It seems many Republicans think the entirety of the Constitution is the 2nd amendment, and there is nothing else written.  It is congress that is responsible for the budget and spending, and congress alone.  It is the duty of the congress to ensure that our debts get paid.  That "shall not be questioned".  Sure seems like the Republicans are questioning it.  That is out of their scope of practice, and unconstitutional, but they do it anyway.  You don't go out to a restaurant, order the food and eat it, then debate about if you should pay the bill.  It's not like they are debating, "Can we afford to go out to eat?".  They already ate.  Pay the damn bill.

It is Congress that passes the budget.  ONLY the House can submit a money bill.  Republicans  are just as bad, if not worse, about pork barrel spending.  Republicans overwhelmingly voted for two wars while cutting taxes.  What do you suppose will happen when you cut taxes and increase expenditures?

I'm the one ranting? You have a very strange perspective.

I judge a man in part by his words and actions.

Your persistent defence of this president and his cabinet speak volumes about your standards.

My point is clearly illustrated by his words of March 2006 and Spetember 2013.

no pitiful excuses, when he came into office he had the house and the senate in dem majority rule for 2 years. the repubs had "0" power to stop anything. why did he not fix it then? is your memory that selective? our 'debts' are out of control, we need to reign in the spending, tax increases will do nothing without cutting the spending.

Using you're analogy, it's like inviting another couple to dinner and you guys order first, ordering chicken, then the other couple (spending your money) orders lobster.  Why is there nobody brave enough enough at the table to say hold on there in the first place?  That's the problem.  Spending other people's money.

Want to change Washington?  Go to Sean Hannity's website (Regardless of how you feel about him).  He has/had a link that takes you to where you can see how your congresspeople voted in the past.  I did that.  My rep is Nita Lowey.  I took a look at her voting record and she NEVER VOTED NO.  Not once.  And every vote of Yes is a vote to spend money. Plain and simple.  She has never voted no to spending.  Really!  This is what's wrong with our leadership.  They're not leaders, they're blind followers.  We see this with every issue.  Obamacare passed without one Republican vote.  A completely partisan, 2 trillion dollar redistribution law that the CBO recently warned was unsustainable.  Vote them all out.

16+ TRILLION in debt and rising dramatically.

Blame whoever you want. Doesn't change it.

Obviously, this should have been dealt with decades ago and at some point the day of reckoning will arrive.

The choice is rather clear to me. No more debt increases. Make the tough choices to reign in the spending now, while still have a good name and rating.

The alternative is to keep kicking an ever growing can of doom down the road until we don't get to fix this ourselves.

I wonder if what goes around comes around

Does anybody remember how we bankrupted the USSR?

It was by forcing them to spend money they didnt have with their
economy unable to generate income.

Today Putin is getting his way with us

I often wonder if the old spymaster is behind Speros and the puppetmaster who gave
us POTUS we have now  After all the Russians have been masters of human intelligence and long range planning for almost a hundred years.  Just because Russia is riddled with corruption (as is our congress) does not mean the  Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedk and the Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye  is asleep at the wheel  thats SVR and GRU the external and internal intelligence arms of the republic
(If I dissapear tomorrow the answer is yes     :o  )
Of course we are spending money we dont have, bleeding our brave young and women to fight
for people who want us dead and printing money that has no real value

But play on and dont worry, nothing to see here.

Congress is supposed to create a budget,   They haven't produced on in the past 6 years.

OK as a citizen, we step up and take Air Force One away from the cry baby.

He can walk to his damn golf games instead of flying all over the world to play.

He can quit flying his family to hell and gone for vacations.

I was raised if ya don't have the $$$$ you can't afford it.    Well, he can't afford it.

His wife could cut back about 90% of her staff and save a great big bundle in Salaries.

He can fire all of his Czar's and save a bunch in salaries.

I'm still trying to find in any law on this land why we are paying Ex-Presidents, Legislators and Senators or anyone else full pay after their Tenure.    You don't find that in Private Industry, so why should it be allowed in the Government.

I'd like to see all the $$$ stolen from Social Security replaced before anyone can take a Break, Vacation and or etc.     We could garnish their wages until it is totally repaid or they don't get reelected.

Also, anything they pass or suggest for Buckwheat to sign into law, should include them also.     NO exemptions for them from anything or anyone elsee for that matter.

Yeah, I know it won't work, but it sure as hell would make a hell of a hole in their income and replenish all of us old retirees SS.     It is hell to live on SS and Job retirement.     If I hadn't of invested wisely over the past 60 years, I'd be up crap creek without a paddle.

There are a lot of little things that need to be approved by someone who cares instead of brain dead.     In just a few years all hell will break lose and my grandkids will have nothing, just like my grandparents did during the depression in late 20' and early 30's.     At least that I know what I'm talking about, I lived in those times on a 80 acre farm.     I helped grandpa and my dad as much as a 8 - 15 year old could.     Also, we did not have this BS law kids of a certain age can not work.

This is just my thoughts, no need running my thoughts in the ground cause I will NOT respond to your post.

If we put some of these kids of today to work or in the Military, bet ya 10 to 1 there would be some attitude adjustments in their mentality.    Drop out of school and you just signed you enlistment papers, for 4 - 8 years, I prefer the 8 years.   No College asistance for time served either.

Ya get any type of welfare, ya pee in a bottle once a month in front of a medical person of the same sex so your pee can't be altered.

I don't care if you respond to my response or not.

Congress is supposed to create and pass a budget, and they haven't so let's take away the President's airplane and make him walk?  Nice logic.

Calling our President "buckwheat"?  No, you're not a bigot are you?  This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about when I say so many of our President's detractors are racists.  Not liking his policies doesn't make you a racist, but making comments based on his race does.  As President Bush was erasing our surplus and converting it to over a trillion dollar a year deficit, I'm sure you were screaming for Bush to lose Air Force One, and for Laura to cut her staff.  I'm sure you demanded the Bush's not take any vacations too.  We both know the truth.  You don't hold Obama to the same standard you held Bush do you?  We both know why also.  You just don't like any "buckwheats" do ya?

You think there should be no age limits on children workers.  What our country is lacking is young children working in sweatshops huh?  I'm not sure many agree with your third world country business plans for America.

Your idea to humiliate a person for needing public assistance by making them pee in a bottle in front of someone once a month is abhorrent.

What I got out of RJ's point here is, too many kids are given things and should know what it's like to "EARN THEM" and be appreciative of them not to EXPECT THEM to be handed to them and feel like it's their God given right.... GEEZ dude.......talk about twisting things around!!!

Your idea to humiliate a person for needing public assistance by making them pee in a bottle in front of someone once a month is abhorrent.

What I got out of RJ's point here was too many people are RIDING THE SYSTEM and PLAYING ON OUR MONEY to get by. Yes the system is not perfect but there has to be a point to overreaching their reason for accepting benefits............ (you like that word "over-reaching"?) another way to twist the word "lying". There are people well deserving of those benefits and they should receive them but those that don't.............

I'm well familiar with the workings of our folks in Washington. I'm also well aware of how our government should work.  While most of us here are making good points, it tends to muddy up the situation.  Therefore, since too much thinking hurts my brain,  I made my own guidelines and facts as I see them.

The POTUS was elected by people who want a free ride and people who don't like free enterprise and independence. Instead they like government DEpendence.

The POTUS is an incompetent leader who lies, twists the facts,  panders to HIS base, and is a very typical  politician.  These characteristics are not just peculiar to the white race.  Blacks, Hispanics, Asian, and all others, can share, unbiased, in these traits.

The Democrats are only concerned about getting reelected or protecting their president and future possible Democratic presidents.

The Republicans, for the most part, are a bunch of spineless arseholes who can't even seem to agree among themselves as to how to combat The Democrats ideas on government.

The whole bunch of them should be thrown out and we should start over with true representatives of the people. Not gonna happen, tho.

Other than that, we are in fine shape. :)

QuoteI don't care if you respond to my response or not.

RJ wont respond to your crap but I will.....

YOU don't know RJ. I have known him for many years. Long before YOU came into this club. That rough old Marine is not afraid to speak his mind. He has "earned" that right fighting for this great country in two wars and getting two purple hearts. He is one of the greatest members of this club you could ever meet. He will do anything for anyone. PERIOD. With that said. He calls everyone "buckwheat" so before you get your panties in a wad calling him a bigot you might to think about that.

Kids today don't know the meaning of hard work. Most of them are spoiled rotten. They just want everything handed to them. So I think everyone should start work at 15 or 16.  I didn't see RJ say anything about sweat shops. How about McDonalds, walmart ECT. Are those places sweatshops ?? But you see some kids today rather have their parents provide everything for them so they don't have to work.

I think everyone on welfare SHOULD be required to take a drug test. Humiliating? Maybe. But to me getting welfare in itself to some people could be humiliating. If would be to me.  Welfare, foodstamps, ect were designed to HELP people in times of need. NOT to be a career. Before you jump all over me for that comment. I think anyone that NEEDS help should get it. Black, white yellow or purple.  But they should be required to work for it. Cleaning roads or performing community service. NOT sitting on their collective asses. Is that too much to ask.?  Now excuse me I am leaving in a few to spend some time with some great VRCC members at the Indiana Dragon roundup. Not reading your continues drivel....

Great post, Mark!
RJ has greatly earned the right to speak out.
Now, onto my rant.  I work for a living.  I was drug tested, it wasn't "demeaning".  If you want $$$ you do what is required.
Oh, and I would never call our current POTUS "Buckwheat".  He has earned the title of Dear Leader or Der Furhrer, in my opinion, and I am not afraid to say it.

Ain't a damn thing wrong with that peeing in the bottle thing. I did it as a truck driver holding a C D L. If I wanted to continue working it was REQUIRED. Demeaning-abhorrent-not really cause my skin ain't as thin as some folks. And I was earning my pay check by my labor. DO NOT want a drug or alcohol effed up mind guiding 40 tons or more on the same highway with me. As far as a drug test for folks getting gubmint shekels-DAMN good idea. WHY should WE fund their drug habit IF they have one?? If yer clean should NOT be a problem. I worked in the private sector and da gubmint passed a law that C D L holders pee in the jug. If airline pilots and truck drivers have to pee in the jug from the private sector WHY NOT folks taking gubmint money so they ARE NOT FUNDING A DRUG HABIT?? If it bothers tyhem to pee in a jug mayhaps there is a problem and we the people should NOT fund their recreational drugs. RIDE SAFE. buckwheat-good un R J  :2funny:

Airline pilots and truck drivers pee in a cup because of safety concerns.  See the difference there?  You think it's funny to call our President "buckwheat" because of the color of his skin?  Another racist.  See the trend here with his detractors?

Then why do I have to have a drug test?!?  I dispatch, I don't drive. Nothing safety related at all. Why?  BECAUSE TO EARN MY PAYCHECK MY COMPANY REQUIRES ME TO BE DRUG FREE.  They call the shots.
I think, as taxpayers, we should know that people who are taking money that has been paid into a system are not using it for drugs.  And if they are actively looking for a job, like they should be if they are not on disability, they should expect to be drug tested.
Daddie-O, since you are calling everyone a racist, I am going to post my 2 cents.  I think you are a spineless keyboard commando who bows down to any politician that has a D next to their name; and when you don't have any basis for an argument, you resort to insults like a middle-schooler.
"I aim to misbehave."

Skinhead

I've heard enough of the racist crap, I seem to remember Bush being refered to as Oppie, and don't recall any outrage.

As far as the children working thing, I believe RJ was refering to some recent legislation that either passed or was being considered to make it illegal for children below a certain age to work on their family farms.  Correct me if I'm wrong RJ.

RJ didn't "earn" the right to be a bigot.  That right was granted to him by the Constitution.  I'm sure he calls everyone "buckwheat", that makes a lot of sense  :uglystupid2:

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I guess they forgot to add, "So they may see what they are doing while we make them pee in a cup".  lol

Luke 6:20-21
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: 'Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.  'Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. 'Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.  But first, pee in this cup to prove you are deserving.

Matthew 25:34-36
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."  Scratch that, make them pay up front or pee in a cup once a month.

Luke 14:12-14
He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."  Oh, and please make sure to make them pee in a cup first.

Psychotic Bovine,  I don't call everyone a racist, only those that make obvious racist comments.  Did your feelings get hurt?  Invest in some kleenex to dry your tears.  As far as keyboard commando goes, it takes a real internet tough guy to call someone spineless on a forum when you are halfway across the country.  Keep writing checks your ass can't cash, it will catch up with you one day.  You'll be mumbling ,"Oops, did I say that out loud?  I forgot I wasn't on the internet."  As you swallow your teeth.

You're funny.  Still spineless, though.

I said I wouldn't respond, but I want  to clarify or correct 2 statements Mad6Gun made.

It was only 1 war, but 2 tours.

It was FIVE (5) Purple Hearts and got all of them on the 2nd tour.    I hit Korea in March 52 the 2nd time and left in a body cast on August 9, 1952.

I DID NOT SAY anything about a sweatshop, but on the farm we had chores to do.  A lot of my city buddies got summer jobs working on the farm.    Helping bale and stack oats, this was before the combines we have now.    We had to combine them with a stationary machine.   Load the bales of Oats on a wagon and then feed the bales to the machine.    I rode a horse bareback hauling 2 great big Shine jugs with a rope between them full of water.

Then there was hay baling.   Ya had to mow it, after it dried a little bit ya win rowed it, then proceeded to run a bailer up and down those win rows creating bales.   2 people set on the back of the bailer stuffing wires back and forth so as to secure the bale.    Before the motorized equipment on the market today, a bunch of farmers would get together and help one another with the oats & hay.

Grandma and all the farmers wives and daughters assisted in preparing a dinner meal for these helpers.  Ya finish up one neighbor & head down the road to the next farmer who crop was ready.

Then we had to pick corn, they only had 1 and 2 row pickers back then, and some farmers picked their corn by hand.    I picked a lot of corn in my very young days.  I had the 1 row next to the wagon.   Mom Had the next 2 rows and dad had the next 3 rows.    When I got older I picked 2 rows also, and dad got to drop a row.    We picked 6 rows a run through the field.   This was with horses or mules.    When we got a tractor, then I drove the tractor on this chore, I also got to mow the hay, and win row it, then last but not least I got to stuff wires on the rear making hay bales..

Winter, we had calves, and when spring came we did our planting and start all over again.     The kids of today, wouldn't last 6 hours in the field.   Oh yeah, we detasseled corn also, I forgot what it paid but it was good $$$$$.    The corn dealers hired us for that.

Oh, on the peeing in a jar.      My son has a neighbor who just had her 12th kid a few weeks ago.     I'm not sure what the County gives her per kid, but the more she has, the more $$$$ she gets.    In a couple of weeks, her stud, no husband, will get her pregnant again so as to get more $$$$.

Now that is your History 101 for today.

But these are going to be the competitive career choices in the future.  Screw law or medicine, you'll be able to make a living, buy a home, raise a family, and go on vacations working at McDonalds.  Isn't that what they were picketing for?  McDonalds and Walmart workers still being on public assistance.  How Great will it be whe you can buy a house, yet have absolutely no skills?  Open a bag of fries, pour into basket, press #5 button, wait for beep.  You are now completely trained to work at McDonalds, when can you start?  Open a box, put the contents on a shelf, you are now trained to work in Walmart.  You can buy a home and raise a family.  Good job!   :uglystupid2:

RJ, you are wasting your time .  He doesn't understand and never will.

I have my own opinion of this poster and the Book of Proverbs covers the subject well.  However, i won't engage in name calling on this board (except for politicians and they are fair game :))

A person working 40 hours a week at minimum wage earns $290 a week before taxes.  Does that seem acceptable to you?  Can a person pay rent, utilities, food, clothing, laundry, healthcare, and transportation to and from work on that?  So what should they do without?  Should they be homeless, or just not eat?  Should they just go naked, and never see a doctor?  Should they just learn how to teleport to work freely?  Or are you suggesting that no one should work at McDonalds period?  Of course no one is getting rich working at McDonalds, but if you work 40 hours a week, shouldn't you be able to at least survive?
