The Fence Test

You can't get any more accurate than this!
This is straight forward country thinking.

Which side of the fence? If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a Conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.

If a Liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.

If a Liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.

If a Liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.

If a Liberal is down-and-out he wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.

A Liberal demands that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.

A Liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

If a Liberal decides he needs health care, he demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a Conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.

A Liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Well, I forwarded it.

Depends on the person. I know a number of liberals who like and own guns. I also know liberals who have no problem with the mention of God and Jesus.

I'm sorry, but it's just not that simple. Not with liberals and not with conservatives either. It never is.

it's never black and white is it? my 'liberal' (label) brother in law keeps surprising me and I find agreement in the darnedest stufff.

I'll just use my obviously biased views on what a modern liberal is, wants and believes from what I see: (Modern liberal being almost a 180 degree from a classical liberal)

-Success should be punished
-Equality of results, not equality of opportunity
-Help the weak by destroying the strong
-Bigger government is better government
-People should be defenseless and at the control of the government
-White heterosexual males are inherently evil and must be cut off at the knees to be "fair"
-People should be controlled by the government in all facets of their lives

I could go on, but that's how I see it. You can sugar coat any of those, of course, and make them sound all flowery like, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Of course, modern conservatives aren't a whole lot better in many respects.

Short version - liberals wanna destroy business and free the individual, conservatives wanna control the individual and free business. (Obvious exceptions, guns being one.)

Beware the great global libertarian conspiracy! We want to take over the world, and then LEAVE YOU ALONE.

As a liberal, I completely disagree with your assessment.  This would be more accurate:

Success should be celebrated.
Equality of opportunity is the goal.
Help the weak, it makes us all stronger.
Government is necessary to protect us from the evils of greed.
People should have access to certain (not all) weapons for self protection.
No one is inherently evil.
Government has a role in regulation for the protection and safety of us all.  (ie DoD, USDA, EPA)

I see conservatives as people who think:

Wealth should be redistributed to the top, and it will some how "trickle down".
Businesses are people.
The environment is not to be protected, it should be exploited at all costs for profit.
The government is full of evil people with bad intent (except for their representative).
Anyone who has fallen on hard times is lazy and just wants to mooch.
Anyone that isn't Christian is evil, and we should make laws to discriminate against them because America is a Christian country.
The Government should regulate who you should marry, and what you should do with your own body.
Any regulation to protect your food, air, water, land, worker safety, is only there for the purpose to kill jobs.
Despite 98% of the world's scientists agreeing about the causes of Global Climate Change, the scientists are wrong because the oil companies have said everything is fine, just keep buying oil.
The Government spends more than it takes in because of programs for the poor, sick, and elderly.  We should get rid of them (both the programs and the people).  Just tell the poor to get jobs and they will have them!  Tell the sick and injured to heal themselves or die!  Tell the elderly to not age, or just work until they drop dead.

Because there are so many shades of gray, I try to break it down as simple as possible, without calling names.

Liberals believe more government involvement is better and responsible for much of our lives.

Conservatives believe the people should have more say and be responsible for more of their own lives.

Despite 98% of the world's scientists agreeing about the causes of Global Climate Change, the scientists are wrong because the oil companies have said everything is fine, just keep buying oil.  Again a source here would be in order.  I guess the coal industry just isn't convincing enough when they say everything is fine, so we'll just legislate this industry and the abundant energy source it provides out of existence because 98% of the world scientist agree it is responsible for Global Warming (What it was called before reality didn't support it's existence and had to be called Global Climate Change)

Seems easy enough, but it's just not true. An awful lot of "conservatives" are just fine with big government. They just want their idea of big government. Conservatives often want to legislate morality.

Once again the mantra about bad, big oil. Put your lifestyle where your big mouth is. Quit driving, don't buy tires for your car, quit buying groceries, and get off your computer because many of the major components to construct the machine you post your drivel on are brought to you by...yup...petroleum. Go native....go Mother Jones....if not... then you're just another hypocrite talking out of both sides of your mouth.

On another note about liberals owning and liking guns. Again, a worn out phrase they use to somehow fool people into the belief they support and defend 2A. Nothing could be further from the truth. Witness that they continue to vote for and support the very people whose agenda is to strip away the rights guaranteed under that amendment. In otherwords....they are just democrats with guns...nothing more.

I wrote "liberals owning and liking guns." I think the statement stands on its own. Up to you to infer what it means on a personal level. Voting to keep those in office that are bent on subverting the 2A makes any claims of defending the 2A specious at best.

I bet more liberals have guns than conservatives.  Liberals aren't vested in trying to take away your guns.  Also, as the Civil War proved, we are better skilled at using them.  ;)

The 2nd amendment doesn't guarantee your right to an assault weapon any more than it guarantees my right to an RPG, or a nuclear weapon.

Those Republicans became Democrats, and the Democrats became Republicans.  Which party was "states rights" and anti civil rights (Democrat), and which party is now (Republican)?  Which party was pro federalism and pro civil rights (Republican), and which one is now (Democrat)?  These are well known facts.  Truth will set you free.

I don't know if I'm supporting or disagreeing with Daddy O about who was for what in the battle for Civil Rights. But I looked it up in an article from USA Today:

"While Birmingham's fire hoses and police dogs roiled the nation, GOP senators issued this statement in June 1963: "The Republican Members of the U.S. Senate ... reassert the basic principles of the party with respect to civil rights, and further affirm that the president, with the support of Congress, consistent with its duties as defined in the Constitution, must protect the rights of all U.S. citizens regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin."

Then they put their words into action. The 1964 Civil Rights Act passed the House with 80% of the GOP vote, compared with support from only 61% of Democrats. In the Senate, 82% of Republicans voted for it; only 69% of Democrats did. When the Voting Rights Act passed one year later, Republicans again outpaced the Democrats.

Granted, the Republicans of the 88th Congress didn't pay tribute to the 1963 march. But what they did do was more significant than any celebration would have been. It's a lesson today's Republicans need to learn.
