I was working on a older GMC Ciera truck changing out a very loose RF inner tie-rod assembly. Well being the truck had over 100K on it the part was frozen. I have to remove the good outer tie-rod off of the inner to do the repair. So I grabbed the shop torch and proceeded to heat the outer tie-rod end to free it from the inner. Put the vice grips on the inner. Got the end plenty hot and got it to break loose. Put the torch out and laid it down on my tool cart. Then proceeded to grab the part I had just heated with my right hand. DAMN THAT'S HOT.. Pulled my rubber glove off as fast as I can thinking I was going to find blue rubber seared to my hand. No thankfully. But it is burned BAD. Ran cold water on it and sprayed it with burn spray. The shop Shuttle van driver had to take me to the clinic. They treated it but not before it blistered big-time. The blister is about a inch and a half across and raised about a half inch and runs from the base of my thumb to the index finger. Damn that hurt. I have been off of work since. Have seen the Doc three times since. Yesterday they removed the blister. Now it really hurts. Go back on Monday for another followup. Have no idea when I will be back to work. I have no idea what in the hell made me grab that part. Got in a hurry I guess. Like they say. Stupid hurts. I can attest to that.......

Well Mark, These things usually sound more stupid when you try to explain them.  At the moment (just before) everything seems to make perfect sense until, um........er.........you know, in an instant its too late and then you spend a long time healing and trying to explain....WHAT WAS I THINKING.

You dont need to ask how I know.........sorry man, it still sucks

alph

well, that'll teach yeah!

(don't think you're the only one that's done that.....)

was working with this one guy in a church attic.  there was a steal pipe (still don't know why it was there) that was between the rafters right at head height.  my co-worker comes up the side by the bell tower where the pipe was, I warned him NOT to hit his head on the pipe, so what's he do?  he puts his right hand on the pipe, then thrusts his head good and hard right into the pipe!!  I swear I could feel it all the way down where I was!!  man he hit that thing HARD!!

I worked for a concrete outfit when I lived in Colorado. We had a shop foreman who would 9 and a 1/2 times out of ten grab the piece I just got done cutting with the cutting torch or just got done laying the last bead on with the arc welder. Had it ONLY happened once I would have been O K with that. RIDE SAFE.

I suppose ya grabbed it with your right hand.      If you are right handed, ya  got to always grab with your left hand.

When I see ya in person, I'll explain why.

If ya is left handed, then ya done did it right.

I was working on a stand up Elec. Forklift and forgot it had like six fans in the system. I had my left hand on the wire harness feeling for a fuse link and stuck my finger in the fan, ripped the nail off cut it to the bone. One of many dumb things I did through the years. Heal fast and have a Merry Christmas.
I just wanna Ride............:)  And hang out with all the cool Kids riding Motorcycles.

Yeah, we've all done dumb ass things before, but, for a burn, the best thing I have found to use and I'm not bull shitting, is plain old mustard like for your hot dog, no, not that hot dog. Really, the yellow mustard is fantastic for burns, will take a lot of the pain away real quick.

Was at a house fire a few years back.  After the fire was mostly out we were mopping all the hot spots when one of my guys made a comment about finding a spanner wrench that he had lost out of his pocket during the initial attack.  Dumbass took off his insulated fire glove and reached down to grab the metal wrench that just went through a house fire. When you can read the manufacturers name in your hand its not a good thing.... :uglystupid2:

We had one of the garage tech's when we were riding Harleys, that stuck his hand down between the exhaust header pipe and the cylinder for a nut that got away during take off.

Yes, the motor had been ridden in and he started on it immediately.    After it was over, he said damn, that one never cooled off very quick.

It left a Name Imprint in his arm like he had been branded.   Well actually he had.     It was a BUB system.      The letters stood for 'Big Ugly Bastard'.    They sponser several bikes at the Salt Flats.      I had a set on the Harley I traded for the Valkyrie.    Sounded good, it did not have the Potato sound.    It was a nice deep rumble.

I worked in a garage part time when i was a younger man.  The boss was older and had thick calloused hands.  He got a kick outta handin' me hot stuff fom vehicles he was working on and then laughing his azz off when I dropped the parts real fast.
I had so much fun in that garage.......so many stories to tell.

Hope your burn heals fast man. Been there.

Similar to you SpidyJ, worked in my dads machine shop.  He handed me a part right out of the lathe after he inspected it.  Good thing we stood on wooden pallets or that part would have been scrap.
I told him, "It just don't take me long to check it out!"  Hehe

Done that witha nut on an exhaust. Heated it up, got it spinning. Once it spun too easy for the wrench, i just reached up and turned it with my hand. Burned the you know what out of my 2 first fingers and thumb. Happens to the best of us mark. Hope for quick healing...

Burned the palm of my hand about 25 years ago.  They gave me a couple Percocet in the ER and I literally watched the pain go away.  They immed. gave me a bucket of ice water and I would soak until I couldn't take the cold any longer, then  I removed my hand from the ice for as long as I could take the heat.  I did this 6 or 7 times, after taking the pills.  Then, while in the out of the ice cycle, I was looking at my hand and it was sooooo hot,..........and then it wasn't.  I never took my eyes off my hand.  It was really like I watched the pain go away.

I love Percocet.   :-*

Jess from VA

Watched most of a lb. can of FFFG go off in my right hand.  I tried to drop it, but was not fast enough.

Burned the upper half of my body.  Demerol wouldn't do it (till they doubled up on the shots), ice water was the only relief (packed me with sheets, ice and cold water on a gurney), until I passed out from the Demerol.

Talk about dumbass attacks.

Blowing yourself up for the 4th of July is just taking patriotism too far.

reminds me of the story of the new guy working in a blacksmith shop who picks up a shoe the blacksmith just made and drops it real quick.

Blacksmith says " hot ain't it"

Guy say's " Nope just don't take me long to look at a horse shoe"

See, now I've always heard the 'hot' thing as being too heavy to hang/hold on too with the doesn't take long to look over response.

Bert AKA,Valkaholic

I agree with that Saying ,"It didn't Take Me Long To Look At It' That is what we used to say at the Shop where I worked.

I'm with you Hoser, I saw and pulled a lot of people, kids included, out of burning vehicles in my tenure on the CHP.

I think the one that bothered me the most was a car train accident.   They couldn't find the 3 kids who were in the car.

We looked all over and finally found them when the wrecker arrived.    He lifted the car up and the 3 kids had all been burned to death under the hot muffler on the car.    That came damn close to me losing my breakfast.     Never want to see one of those again.

It still makes my stomach churn and that has been almost 50 years ago.

That's enough on this topic for today.

About 20 years ago I was managing a small Mexican restaurant (burrito stand), and I was chopping up Jalapenos.  I went to go take a leak, and after I was done I was washing my hands when I heard the bell jingle that lets me know a customer has entered the restaurant.  I get to the counter and I start making a burrito for the customer when my dick starts burning.  More and more customers enter as the lunch rush starts and I am standing behind the counter feeling like my dick is on fire.

Moral of the story:  If you are cutting Jalapenos wash your hands immediately before touching anything else.

Try working in poison ivy and then stupidly taking a leak behind the barn. Once is enough, you never forget after that.

Working as a welder I have smelled my own flesh and hair burning a few times. The one that stands out is when I worked as a production welder in a semi-trailer factory. We were building the rear frames which were assembled and held in place for welding on a large table with 8 air-vices which held the frames in position for welding. During part of this job one guy would hold an angle and the tail end of the other guys tape measure. When the guy holding the tape saw the measurement was right he nodded to let the welder know and closed his eyes while retrieving the tape. At the same time the other guy started the weld and pushed the tape measure end off the part so his partner could retrieve it. My bud thought it would be funny to burn my tape measure in two with his meg. When I retrieved it with my eyes shut the red hot end stuck in my finger tips. It was so hot and unexpected that I smelled my fingers burning before I felt it.

Also, it doesn't take too many hours of welding before your exposed skin begins to have a burned flesh smell which will stay there until you shower.

And, by the way, if you cut a deer antler in a high speed table saw it can generate a smell which is almost disabling.
