I stayed out of "that" thread.  Could tell it was gonna go south pretty quick. 

It's a damn shame that the same one or two name calling, pot stirring antagonists can't keep it civil and then get their panties all bunched and their feelings hurt when someone calls them on their name calling bs.

The board had a warning on one particular thread and when the warning(s) went unheeded the boom was lowered. The personal attacks seem to continue no matter what is said or done. How hard is it to put on your big boy pants when you show up to play or comment or partake in the discussion?? This may or may not work BUT if you absolutely positively feel the overwhelming need to attack some one and you can not possibly function in your little corner of the world with out attacking some one this board offers o very nice and I might add-discreet way to accomplish that nefarious deed in PRIVATE. P M them-them being the ones you need to attack. And only the ones you feel the need to attack. I am positive with out a doubt that one of two things will transpire. The first is you 2 or 3 or how ever many can carry out your nastiness in private between consenting parties. The second thing that will happen is upon recognizing the sender it WILL be ignored and the rest can suffer thru P M S in relative peace. Nuther words-take yer B S private.  I done now.  RIDE SAFE.

This is my take on Message Boards like this one. A general opinion.

Let's take the example "You're dumber than a bunch of rocks"

Is this a personal attack?

If done in a public forum with the intent to assail someone's character and publicly belittle them, absolutely. This will obviously lead to a similar response of some kind and the conversation rapidly gets toxic.

If the need to assail someone's character becomes irresistible, do it privately, through a private message or email.

Making the conversation toxic is an insult to all involved in the conversation, not just the intended target as it lowers the standards of the conversation to nothing more than a grade school spat.

Mix that with the inherent dynamic of message board conversations where you can easily misinterpret postings, miss intended sarcasms, and not have the benefit of seeing a person's body language and expressions, and even a simple conversation can go south quickly. Personal insults and assailing someone's character just does it even faster.

I strive to not insert personal attacks on anyone. I try to stick to the topic or policy at hand and not assail someone's character. I'm sure I have on occasion, failed in the past. Sitting behind a keyboard, it is easy to let things rip. It takes effort to control that.

But it's not that hard to do.

Although I personally have not attacked anyone here I can say that I belong to a knife collectors forum (2of them) and this goes on not only here but anywhere people start talking religion or politics.
