We hooked up this morning for a nice ride around some of the backroads of The Great Smoky Mountains . All started well .

I took us on some little traveled mountain road's around The Foothills . We was just cruisin' on up a steep hill with a curve and the next thing I knew I was on ice. I made it through about 15 to 20 yards of solid ice. When I looked in my mirror all I saw was headlights going every which way .

The mud, grass, rocks and straw we put there to try to keep our feet under us while we picked the bike's up... It was a bitch getting those heavy ass fat girls up while standing on 1  inch of ice.

Here's the worse part of all this . My friend Paul ( Wimp ) did'nt get hurt when his bike went over he was walking back to his bike after we got it up when he fell HARD on the ice. He said something " popped in his leg " . He rode his bike home but was in pain doing so ( He's a tough ol'dude ) . I don't think Gordon's bike got a mark on it however Wimp's right saddlebag took a lick and has the scars to prove it.

" The Money Shot " taken on the other side of the ice. Gordon wanted me to come back through and ride with them .... Noway was I going through it again I got lucky as a s**thouse rat making it the first time. We agreed on a meeting spot and I took off one way and them the other...... Hellofa ride today...

I've seen alot of people that thought they were cool , but then again Lord I've seen alot of fools.

If you're going to ride on that  ship you'd better get chains or put studs in those tires.
Thanks for the pics, it'll keep me off of the road till it's really clear.
Hope nothing serious come out of this. :)

Sorry to hear this news, Joe. It makes me sick when I see our bikes upside down. I'm just glad there weren't any more
injuries.

I hope Paul made it through with only minor injuries.  :(

Wow.... hope all turns out well.

In the pics it doesn't appear that area of road gets much sun at all... and was actually still in shade when the photo was taken.

We have plenty of those spots in Winter, and even with no recent precip, the melt off the hills covers the back roads all over the place in shady corners.  I ride all Winter, but not on those back roads..... unless well above freezing for days and nights.  If it's not ice, it's nasty, runny mud and bike washing in cold weather.  Nope.

Sorry for those that fell.  Ouch!

hal47

Really hate to see this, hope paul isn't hurt to bad, glad the bikes weren't hurt anymore than they were.

I am glad I didn't go with you today....there would be a yeller bike laid down in those pictures too.
I hope Wimp recovers....like you said he is one tough dude. That road looks familiar...where is it?

(Doesn't both Wimp & Gordon have bike tires?)

Glad to hear yall are alright, hope your friend Wimp has nothing broken. I know it will take more than a little ice to keep your group down.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

Mapper

Sometimes good luck can still seem pretty crummy, but you guys are lucky!  Glad everyone is more or less okay.  Glad I haven't seen my Valk from that angle yet.

Valkorado

That'll make you pucker up!  Looks almost identical to a shaded patch I came upon last fall near the Black Canyon.  I knew it would be ugly if I ran onto it and was able to utilize the Valk's brakes just in time.  Thankfully my friend behind me on his V-Strom was paying attention, it was a close call.  Sure sorry to hear about this and glad it wasn't worse than it was.

Keep us updated on Wimp please, (wish he'd go see the Doc, you never know when somethin' "pops").
Bet "Lucky 13's" gonna be sore too, (tell em to holla if'n they needs anything).
Looks like to me that "sticker" car tire...........(read, not gramaw's buick) saved your a** Joey!
Seems like Gordon broke loose to the right, (down the road slope) & Paul seen it happenin' & hit the binders leanin' right in the wet before he even hit the black ice.
Prayers from me & Sugar!
& Joe, I need to know where that is at cause Lawdog drop'd off his ride here 4 days ago & Sugar & I were in the wind for the first time this afternoon for a couple of hours.
Y'all heal quick & stay safe God love ya!
Peace, Whiskey & Sugar.
Peace, Whiskey.

Joe,
Thanks for the pics and also for the heads-up on the dangers waitin' for us. I think your friend Paul is hurt more than you know. Can we all say hematoma? Can we say cracked pelvis? God, I hope not.
Ride like it's your last....grinnin' all the way.

First words out of Paul ( Wimp ) mouth when I got to him.... The car tire made it .
Who knows but more than likely I just got lucky that ice was so slick you couldn't stand on the slope without slidin'  :-\

Can't keep wimp down and Gordon's tougher than a pine knot...

..

Holy Moley.

Hope Paul is OK.

I had the same pucker on ice on the Cherohala a coupla years ago. Thought it was water but a strip of ice about 10 yards wide. Kept the bike upright and prayed to all the gods that I would make it OK.

Same here Paul we had hit some run-off water before this... I thought it was water and never backed out of it  :o

I've had that where there is in the early spring a shaded curvy road on a hillside blocking the sun to melt the snow/ice.  Luckily,  not the whole road was covered, just a tad over 1/2 so could go around before a disaster struck.

When I go around those spots,  makes me wonder what is going to be around the next corner though.

Glad no one was seriously hurt as some of those country backroads you could go off the cliffside.

I thought it may have been Rafter Road...it never sees sunshine

Pepmyster

Wow, what an adventure!!!!! Not good to see that you guys took a spill, please take care of your-selves!
Now this is getting interesting........

Ken Tarver

never seen valkyrie from that angle, and personally hope not too. Get well soon guys. And ride on the sunny side.

Slow speed probably helped a lot to avoid much more damage an injury. One question , did the red bike smoke any when you started it up later?  I dropped my Valk in a ditch and it was upside down and smoked like a steam locomotive. Seems like the oil gets into the cylinders when in that position.
