First, let me state, I am not an Obama fan.

Are we not talking about a war zone?    This is a reporter who entered this "zone" with full knowledge that it is what it is, correct?

Please enlighten me on what Obama is supposed to do.    Is he supposed to send our military to deal with this?    It's not like he is a tourist who just happen to get caught up in some turmoil.    He is there because of his profession, his choice to be there.   Don't get me wrong, beheading or killing someone because of their nationality or religion is pretty disgusting and clearly wrong.    Then again, some big news source sends their company man in and now we want our military to do something about it when he gets killed?     I'm not so sure I can support that.    It's not like they attacked and killed our ambassador.    That is something to have kicked some ass over.   Just my opinion.

It wasn't just the beheading, they say they will drown the US in blood... so...

Nuke 'em till the glow, then hit them in the dark!

We can't let this sort of thing curb our path.  We need another Reagan, please.

If we are talking "war zone" in the strict meaning of the term, then this reporter's beheading is clearly a war crime....is it not?

Whether he was there by choice or as a requirement of his profession is irrelevant. The Geneva Convention clearly defines Prisoners of War to include war correspondents. Offering them the same protections as soldiers that are captured and become POW's. And, Iraq is signatory to the Geneva Convention. Under the auspices of the Convention, ISIS is now guilty of war crimes against the USA. That gives POTUS the go ahead to take action. Now, whether he will or not remains to be seen. My impression is that he'll do nothing, being the dishrag that he is.

And yes I am aware that ISIS has no intention to abide by the Geneva Convention. Which, once again, is irrelevant. It is what it is. And the Dishrag in Chief now has the ammunition, under the Convention, to hunt down and capture or destroy those guilty of war crimes.

Me? I say bomb their asses back into the Stone Age. I'm sick and tired of this "boots on the ground" crap. 7 days of sustained air strikes and we would own Iraq. It gets tedious playing the world police and doing it in a half assed manner. Diplomacy be cursed. Our image in the world wide community be cursed. If we are going to be the world police, then do it without batting an eyelash at what the rest of the world thinks of us.

I understand your position and agree to a certain extent.    I just can't support doing anything to endanger our own military for someone who knowingly entered this area of his own free will for his own personal gain.    I'll also agree that this region has some huge issues but, I'm not sure we can provide the answers.      Don't get me wrong, I have no problem bombing them back into the stone age but, I'm gonna need the right reasons to do it.     We've had good reasons in the past and didn't finish the job.   This reporter's death is not reason enough IMHO.     I also don't believe we should be the world's police but, I don't know that policing is a role we can avoid.

James Foley was there and held captive in the past, a few years ago. I'm surprised he was back there.

But, I think its time we quit screwing around. The rest of world goes to war as conquerers and we go as liberators. I think its time to stop screwing around, get our people out and turn that area into a sheet of glass. Collateral damage be cursed.

I think Foley was captured in 2012 and has been there ever since.  I don't think the other ones they have are coming home either  :'(

One of the detainees the obama released once he and his second in command proudly proclaimed the war was won and the detainees were now harmless has gone on to become the head if ISIS, or, whatever they are calling themselves today.

OK, pick a village and wipe it out.   Let's see where that gets us.    BTW, I said in my first post that I am not an Obama fan, I don't like his policies nor, his agenda.    I also said that I could easily support an action had our Ambassador been killed, he's there serving his country.    Wait, we've been there and did nothing.    Oh yeah and according to our Sec. of State at the time, What did it matter.      This reporter is there by choice, of his own free will.     I'm not nearly as sympathetic.    Now we're gonna get upset by a reporter's death?    I expect this administration will do nothing and this one time,  I think that's probably the right thing to do but, this administration has also screwed up just about everything it's tried to do so, they'll probably launch nukes this time.

I'm pretty sure Hague and Geneva (Law of Armed Conflict) prohibit beheading anyone, combatant or not; at least beheading with a paring knife taking 15 minutes to complete the task.  Death for a combatant or spy may be authorized after some due process, and by a firing squad or rope (see Neuremburg).

ISIS is in violation of many rules, daily.

Course I'd rather lose a couple dozen newsies before one soldier.

I don't usually participate in threads like these and not sure why I'm wading into this one.

I see both sides of this and found myself nodding in agreement as I read each response. Not sure where, exactly, that leaves my opinion. Part of me wants to "nuke them into oblivion." However, the collateral damage may just serve to turn even more of Islam against the West. So, then we're faced with "bombing another area into the stone age." Where does that whole cycle stop?

I definitely agree that I'd rather we deal with this "over there" rather than on our own shores. However, I'm also tired of being the world's police and the cost, both human and financial, associated with it. Like I said, I'm flip-flopping more than a fish out of water. It's a complex problem. I don't believe there is necessarily an answer as easy as bombing them back to the stone age, or simply staying completely the hell out of something that's been raging since the beginning of time. It's somewhere in between. I'm glad I don't have to make the decision.

I've stayed away from this discussion but I guess it doesn't matter.  I've offended folks once or twice before so a couple more times don't nmatter.

If you're given to being offended by frankness move on.  I won't be disappointed.

Beheading is simply another form of murder.  It's gruesome.  It's meant to be so.  It's intended to touch your emotions.  The death itself is as permanent as a bullet in the back of the head.

The journalist was doing what he believed to be his job a year and a half ago in Syria when he was imprisoned until his recent murder.  My heart is sad for him.  My heart is angry with the people who did this and with anyone who condones it.  Honestly, we, the U.S., have been killing some of them in support of Iraqi forces.  They're angry.  I'm angry.  I guess we just didn't post videos of our bombings.  I support our military actions.  I would gladly see more.

The use of nuclear weaponry rolls too easily off our lips.  The reason there is fighting in the Middle East is because there are still a lot of people in the Middle East who are not part of ISIS.  The reason people are being murdered in Iraq, including Christians, is because they're there and they don't line up with ISIS.

I'm not sure we can solve the problem, but I do agree with the observation that we will either fight them there or we will fight them here.  Wouldn't it be nice if they were stupid enough to make a move against Israel and we were smart enough to simply supply and back away.  Sadly I don't think that will happen.

I'm not a fan or supporter of Barrack Obama, but I don't envy his position and available choices at this time.  It's a no win situation.  Making the situation worse, for him, is that at best he is a Muslim sympathizer.   Barrack Obama and his administration is near final evidence that democracy in today's world simply doesn't work the way our founding fathers thought it would.

I am in strong support of our military support of those opposing ISIS.  I'm in support of our intensifying that support though it will likely result in more murder videos by ISIS.  They're murderers.  That's what they do.  Any promise they make to not do that reminds us of the story of the frog and the scorpion.

Pray for peace.  Pray for the death of evil.  Know that it won't happen and be ready to do what we need to do.

Remember Pearl?  He met his end in similar fashion but had the integrity not to

Its how it is   Sad but true that someone imprisoned for years should be murdered in such
a way  It shows the world that NO jihadist should be believed and all who tow the line
are fair game from the western civilizations such as they are.

Since apparently the word is now no quarter is being given none should in return be offered period

No prisoners?  Fine we should take no prisoners  too.  Suspend the geneva convention as vs ISIS

Precedence?  How about our Revolutionary War  Its why Washington felt compelled to hang Major Andre after trial in Tappan NY (a mile from my house in HS) after British kill our surrendering armies

Not a fan of nukes but understand Serk's post

Also dont see the advantage to us by having troops on the ground to defend people we cant identify as friends whether Afghanistan or Iraq.  We should have let the Russians fight them and stayed out of it  Military intelligence is an oxymoron

Well said Carl. What makes this tougher is the lack of support by our allies.  It seems that the populous (pardon my spelling) think that you can rationalize with barbarians. The reason we are loathed is because in this case they see us as weak. Doesn't matter how much we bomb and try to be as civilized about it, they see it as a sign of weakness.

The true change comes from the people themselves. When THEY stand up and cause change then change happens. I don't agree with most of what the administration is doing. But you would see change quicker if we were to support the Kurds and let them turn back the tide ISIS. That becomes the start of change.

Seems like this was tried once before, think'n they called it the Crusades.

Don't think I'm afraid to pull the trigger should that be the answer, I'm more than willing to do so.    The problem is, we're dealing with fanatics and the only way I know to handle them is with overwhelming force.    We have had the opportunities  several times  and didn't follow through.   We don't have the guts to see it done.   I'm damn sure this administration and those who support it don't.

We lost something since the "Greatest Generation" fought WWII.   We've lost our direction.    Some Liberals will say that we're only getting on course, all I can say is, we have different maps and different desired destinations.    There is no doubt in my mind there is an answer but, until the American people develop some back bone and see what they are losing, nothing is going to happen.
