Last spring we let our rental out to a couple with a "dog". Nice couple, good jobs, no drugs, nice well behaved pit. Our insurance caught wind of this and told us they would cancel. We looked at every company we could find with the same results. No insurance, no loan. The renters got rid of the dog, got a golden retriever instead. The agent has been there 3 times to check for the pit. I understand their thinking, but I hate being leaned on by big business.

Almost every pitbull attack I've seen or heard are caused by idiots who buy this breed of dogs and let them loose in the backyard the whole day without giving them any attention or affection whatsoever. Pitbulls like any other dogs need the right amount of socialization, training, attention, and love. You give them all this and they will be the sweetest dog in the world. I know this because I have an Amstaff that I rescued 2 years back. She is sweet, emotional and temperamental but very very loyal and obedient. I know if a time ever comes, she will put her life at stake to protect ours.

I would be willing to bet the majority of the dogs in these links are NOT Pits at all. Pits get a bad rap. Any time a mongrel or Boxer, or Bulldog bites someone, headlines scream "Pit Attack!" Without fail. Terriers are by nature sweet and loyal. We did have one that was abused and couldn't be trusted (may have been fed gunpowder), she had to be destroyed, Dogs of ANY breed can be mean if abused. To suggest Pits, as a breed, should be destroyed is plain ignorance. In the past, the same has been said about German Shepherds, Bulldogs, and many other breed popular for protection at the time. Pits are highly intelligent, loyal, and affectionate and is one of my favorite breeds. WHERE are all the links to Bulldog or Boxer attacks? Many breeds are being linked to Pits - it's the politically correct way of placing blame

I've owned pits & mixes for over 20 years. They were raised around my two daughters as they grew up. And now we have a new pit puppy being raised with both my grand kids. They are properly trained, socialized, and know who is the Alpha in the house. Not once, over the course of the time I've had them have we ever seen, heard, or experienced an incident either with the kids or neighbors. This kind of hysteria about a specific breed of dog has been ongoing for decades. In the 70's it was German Shepherds, 80's Dobermans, 90's Rotties, and the turn of the century brought on the hysteria over pits, AmStaffs, and English Bull Terriers. The most dangerous breed on this planet is the human breed.

Yes it is. Untrustworthy, unreliable, temperamental, dangerous, and smart.
And history shows we have been trying to annihilate the other guys for a long, long time, with no letup. Walk softly and carry a big stick was good advice.

I have a Pitt Boxer mix. He's the most gentle, loving, well behaved dog I have ever had and he gets along just fine with our Golden retriever and our tempermental old Basset Hound. All he wants in life is a squeaky ball and a friend to throw it for him. He has never had any formal training, but just naturally takes his cues from me. When someone new comes around, he stands near me and waits to see if he's got a new friend or an early dinner.

A "Pit Bull" is often defined as a short haired dog with a "shorter" muzzle. My favorite photo of a Pit Bull was in a newspaper quite some years ago -- most of us call that "Pit Bull" a PUG!
Most of the Bull Dogs (not the Marine Corps type of Bulldog, but the others) are often called Pits, many Boxers and Boxer mixes are identified as Pits, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, I've even seen folks group the Boston Terrier in the "Pit Bull" category.
Breed bans are slowly being cancelled, as they have not proven to improve the dog bite situation.
Leash laws are in effect almost everywhere, and could be better enforced.
It's like guns -- we don't need new laws or new bans, we need to enforce existing laws.

I think a dog owner needs to go through a good class on how to treat and raise a dog. I don't give a damn what breed.
My neighbor lady has the meanest little firkin dog I've ever seen.
It is a Weiner dog.
I've been out mowing a couple of times and this little bastard has grabbed a hunk of my pant leg.
She isn't really mean to the dog, she just smacks hit a good one across the head when we wets on the floor, rubs his nose in it and crap like that. She needs to learn when he has to go potty and let him out. A couple of times I've wanted to grab her by the neck and shove her nose in the dog pee. Then I'd ask her how she likes it, but I know if I did, I'd have to put up with a temper tantrum from Red. Which I'd deserve for mistreating that female human animal.

I've had 5 German Shepherds in a row and Rotties before that when no one had even heard of them. I have a new 6 month old male GSD right now, smartest dog ever invented, loyal, obedient, energy to burn, know he will protect the house, my family and me without question. ZERO aggression.
Guess what? I'm in contact with a lady who bought his brother and she's having nothing but trouble. He's still a pup (60 pounds and skinny, all ribs) but wants to fight other dogs, won't listen, come etc and I guarantee will be a problem because he's already decided he's the Alpha with 3 women in the house.
People will blame the dog or breed but yeah, IT'S THE OWNER that's the problem in 90% of the cases.
However what many defenders of these breeds fail to acknowledge is that some are more prone to aggression and can do far more damage should they go off.
Having said that, I'm far more skeeeeeeredof little yappy chihuahua's and fear biting shitzus than any GSD or Pitt.

I love german shepards and most dogs 25 lbs or more. I have 3 Labs now , a yellow, black and silver. I agree 90 percent of dog attacks are the owners fault but there is that other 10 percent that are just bad seeds. I have seen dogs grow up with a family their whole life then turn on the very hand that feeds them for no apparent reason. I have seen dogs raised in the worst of conditions get rescued and be the best most loyal pet anyone could imagine. So really you never know and could end up with a bad one. My mother in law had a pittbull for 5 years. Was the best dog ever, until it almost took her hand off. I'm a huge dog person, wo6ld have 200 of them if I could afford itor had the time for it. My 3 roam the house and the kids crawl all over them. When they get tired of it they get up and go to the back room.

If you watch The Dog Whisperer (one of the better reality shows ever made), you quickly discover that 1/3 of the training is for the dog, and 2/3s is for the owner(s).
And by the time he gets called in, most of his patients (dogs and owners) are basket cases.
And many do worse with their kids than their dogs. (but that's another story)

They had an interesting documentary on TV about dogs, how they were derived from wolves. Which was their origin, it was on PBS, don't recall if it was Nature or Nova. It was kind of scary to think that humans are the creators of the dogs of today. So now I can surly understand the pit bulls downfalls. Guy across the street has a pit, the first time I had interaction with it, I nearly crapped in my drawers. I was working in my garage on my bike, turned and looked down and here was a pit with the head the size of a soccer ball looking up at me. Didn't hear it come in, luckily it was a big slobbering baby, found a new friend that day. Now other observations of them, I found them to be unpredictable and tend to have jealousy issues. Very protective of their masters and territory. Not totally the dogs fault, just doing what they are trained to do. People in the Detroit Metro area get them like it is some kind of fashion statement, totally ignoring the issue and accountably that is involved with them. In most cases it people that don't have time to take care of their responsibilities. I ride 20 miles a day on my bicycle on the trail here in Mich., and people walk dogs that are NOT social and are aggressive because they are territorial. Any dog like that should not be in public, and owners walk them, like it is no big deal and it makes them look fashion wise. Have had dogs come at me, I use to carry a ballpein hammer on the bike, but switched to heavy duty pepper spray. (Dep. Sherriff recommendation)

pitbulls have the stats to back up the fact that they are the most dangerous breed. I have found a great many of them to be friendly and loving but facts are facts and can't be avoided. in 2013 25 pitbull attacks and 1 rottie accounted for 81% of all human fatalities. http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2013.php

The American Bull Terrier (AKC Pit Bull) was bred to do what it does. If the owners of a dog that can be dangerous are negligent in the care and handling of such a breed, then the owners should be held responsible for any consequences. For the record, even if I don't own one, I like pit bulls and oppose any legislation to limit ownership (similar to firearms).
Responsibility of ownership seems not to be in vogue lately. The dog is what it is.

Okay so to the pitbull haters (And honestly, I'm not a fan of the breed myself, but I'm also a libertarian)...
...what do you propose?
Breed specific bans? Round up anything that looks like a Pit and put it down? Force special insurance on owners of specific breeds?
Who decides if it's a Pit Bull or not?
What exactly is your "solution" to this "problem"?
What about last decade's evil dog du jour? Rottweilers, German Shepards, Dobermans, etc? Should they also be rounded up and executed?
Seriously... Some of ya'll seem to have a major problem with some breeds of dogs. Okay then, you're given the power, what's your solution?

My solution????? short of annilating them........at the very least the owner of a pit bull should have to have a license to have one......same as if you owned a tiger or lion. Instead of eithinizing a pit bull after it has attacked (the dog doesn't know it did bad) the authorities need to prosecute the owner directly the same as if he did the attack.

Man.....I don't hate pit bulls.....I just think they are a very very dangerous animal. It just boggles my mind that people who own them and expose them to their small children do so with a clear concious. Time after time again small children are attacked by these dogs. Might as well have a lion or tiger in the house. Lions and Tigers can be affectuionate too......untill they get a toothache or have a food plate taken out from them while they are eating......among other reasons. My son when he was about 20 yrs old and still living at home came home with a baby pit once. I told him to get rid of it and he refused. Next day he came home to his clothes and belongings on the porch. Needless to say the dog disappeared.

-Who decides which dog is a pitbull and which one isn't? Visual identification? DNA testing? What percentage of a match does it take to be a "pitbull"? 51% match? 100%? -Do you support licensing of owners of some types of firearms as well? Should someone be required to be licensed to own a semi automatic rifle? A semi automatic handgun? Any gun? -Should someone require special licensing to own a car over a certain amount of horsepower? Power to weight ratio possibly? If a specific make/model of car is responsible for lots of incidents, should that make and model require special licensing? See where I'm going with this? Once you start demanding people with one thing jump through special hoops for their property, you have to expect the same sort of thing directed towards yourself as well. Should the owner be responsible for what their property does? Absolutely. But should someone have to jump through special hoops to own a particular piece of property? No, I have a big problem with that one...

Dogs were all bred for a specific purpose so to suggest that one breed of canine bred to fight to the death in a pit might have aggressive tendencies is naive. The owner of such a breed should take the responsibility of owning that breed seriously. A German Shepard was bred as a guard/K9 and yet the lack of notoriety has not resulted in the call to curtail the ownership of that breed. There are more dog bites in a given year by Ankle Biters than by Pit Bulls but since those bites seldom result in serious injury, they are largely ignored and not reported.
“A study performed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the CDC, and the Humane Society of the United States, analyzed dog bite statistics from the last 20 years and found that the statistics don’t show that any breeds are inherently more dangerous than others. The study showed that the most popular large breed dogs at any one time were consistently on the list of breeds that bit fatally. There were a high number of fatal bites from Doberman pinschers in the 1970s, for example, because Dobermans were very popular at that time and there were more Dobermans around, and because Dobermans’ size makes their bites more dangerous. The number of fatal bites from pit bulls rose in the 1980s for the same reason, and the number of bites from Rottweilers in the 1990s. The study also noted that there are no reliable statistics for nonfatal dog bites, so there is no way to know how often smaller breeds are biting.”
This is from CBS.com and I doubt they were happy reporting this since it does not meet their narrative of a dangerous dog breed. Just for entertainment there is this from listovative.com as the second most dangerous dog by total fatalities.
2. Cocker Spaniel
2
With 59 fatalities, this breed comes at the second position. They were originally used as gun dogs because of their strong sense of smell and were used to track down birds for hunting. Cocker Spaniels are basically of two origins, England and America. Though the two Cocker Spaniels from two different countries have differences in their appearances, they are yet called cousins. The American one is smaller than the English spaniel though.

My solution????? short of annilating them........at the very least the owner of a pit bull should have to have a license to have one......
Do you feel that ordinary citizen Joe Blow should be able to own a lion or tiger?

Not if his name is Joe Blow! I mean what kind of parents names their kid "Joe Blow"???? The kind of parents that would let their son own a tiger and lion in the same house as their small children.

Serk.....I support your having a right to your own opinion.....but......Does anyone else on this site feel that it should be alright for your next door neighbor to house a full grown tiger in his house???? especially if he has little children living there? ESPECIALLY if I had small children living next door?..... Do I think that there should be restrictions on owning a firearm????? ABSOLUTELY......I feel that the govt or policing agency should not allow felons who used firearms in the commision of a crime to own a gun of any kind.

Quit trying to make this discussion about lions, we're discussing breeds of dogs...

If we are looking for a legislative remedy I would suggest this.
Determine a baseline percentage for dog attack fatalities. If a breed exceeds the percentage, (say if a breed is responsible for 10% or more of dog attack human fatalities and/or severe injuries) the breed will be classified as an "attack risk" breed. You may own such a breed with no extra registration or licence requirements other than common local pet registration.
However, if you own such an "attack risk" breed and the dog does attack and kill someone you will be held criminally responsible and charged with a minimum of Manslaughter if an accident and Murder if the owner's action or inaction was reckless. And if the victim is injured by such a dog, the civil liabilities will be x4.

Firearms are regulated and felons can not have them. Here in Indiana it is legal to have a lion or Tiger or Bear as a pet. Was on the news this morning. All you need is a special permit and you can house any wild animal of your choice, excluding protected species. I wouldn't care if my next door neighbor had a pet tiger, but you better keep that thing on your property because if it comes on mine it is open season and I'll feed it some lead.
