Trump would be an abject failure for us, domestically and internationally.                                Entertainers are entertainers, not leaders of countries nor civilizations.

if he really said McCain is not a hero because he got shot down he
just lost my vote

I may disagree with McCain but he proudly put on that uniform put himself in harm way for us and
paid a very high price

I agree. McCain is not my favorite politician, but for someone who hasn't served his country in any way to say that is B.S.

I've only seen the MSNBC headline version and haven't seen anything on it further.  I'd like to know more on the context of the statement before passing judgment.

He's a war hero, because he was captured.    He grants this..... grudgingly.

What he forgets (or doesn't know) is the shot down over enemy territory, ejection, broken arms and legs, and abuse by North Vietnamese subhuman communist torturers for a very long time.  All these years later, you can still plainly see the damage he suffered.

I'm not happy with RHINO McCain on a lot of things either (which is really what Trump is talking about), but I would not disparage his military service one little bit. (Unlike John Kerry)

I continue to like his plain speaking and positions, but he needs to stop shooting himself in the foot one out of every six shots.

Mr Trump, if you are really serious about a run for the presidency, stop acting as if you're on a TV reality show.

Flame suit on:::  I guess I see this a little different. ANYONE that serves, especially in a war zone IMHO is a hero! There are plenty of people in this and other countries that have been wounded and come home that are only hero's in their own community. The rest of the country doesn't even know these people exist. But IMHO they are just as good as John McCain. The only reason we as a general public know of McCains involvement in the war is because of his postion in politics. IF he wasn't in the political scene he would be no different than any other veteran. The guy is a hero, but no better than anyone else that has served, especially the wounded or the people that gave it all to make our lives better.
I am not a McCain fan but I can respect him as a man just like any other service person.
You are never lost if you don't care where you are!

If Obama had made the same remark about McCain that Trump did, this board would explode with arm waving, chest beating, name calling etc...  No one would be looking for context.  I find that interesting.

Everyone misspeaks.  Trump does speak off the cuff too often. That said, I don't think any politician misspeaks more often than the present nitwit in chief.

I think I understand what Trump meant by the comment, but, it was a screw-up.

McCain is definitely a hero in my book. What he endured [ as well as others] was horrendous. McCain was offered a release because of his father which he refused stating he was staying until all were released. That tells me all I need to know about his character.

He's had numerous opportunities to walk it back or apologize. He's done neither.

noun, plural heroes;
1.
a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.

2.
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal:
He was a local hero when he saved the drowning child.

I obviously don't have a vote on this, but I sincerely hope the Republicans can find a candidate with intelligence, wisdom, courage, and humility, not simply a narcissist who can spout rhetoric, even that rhetoric is (usually) popular with his target audience.  The US doesn't need another polarizing president set on forcing his agenda on his opponents rather than by trying to convince his more reasonable-minded opponents with sound argument and appeal to common sense.  It's too bad that the people that would do the best job as president are the ones most likely to be turned off by the whole political process.

I have been following this thread since the beginning, and I usually try not to get involved into political discussions because political discussions are like wiping your butt with sand paper. About all you're going to accomplish is getting a raw ass  :tickedoff:

Despite this, I feel the need to throw in my two cents worth. While I DO agree with some of the things that Trump has stated (and I emphasize "SOME"), I really believe that he will never win the general election, and about all he's going to accomplish is guaranteeing that the Democratic party (most likely Clinton or Sanders) wins the general election much as Ross Perot did back in the 90's.

Trump blew that one.  He likes the ones that don't get caught?

He needs to apologize or go away.  The illegal alien comments were nothing but hugely exploited by opponents.  This one is too inflammatory.

I was hoping he would make it to the debates in decent standings, at least the first one.  Wanted to see him and the other front runners du jour go at the issues in a venue where they need to demonstrate at least some kind of decorum.

I dont believe this has gone this far

I need to reach his staff so he can learn and utter the following sentences

"What I should have said is...............
Of course McCain served his country honorably and in retrospect his actions while a POW were indeed heroic.
My views on Veterans and how we should take care for them are well known.
I am sorry for any pain I may have caused him and his family and all prisoners of war who served in our armed forces
This matter is now closed lets move on to save our country which is why we are here"

tend to agree with this, the word "Hero" is flung around too easily. The original intent of the word as changed in recent times.
same goes for how some of the navel ships have been named over that last few yrs.

Eleventh paragraph from that article says:That's what we've done to John McCain. And we're doing it to everyone who serves in the military, whether they behave as heroes or not. (Incidentally, we also put celebrities and billionaires on a pedestal, no matter whether they are saintly or slimy.)

Does that make Trump a hero too?

Well if 4 years of college deferments and 18 months of medical deferments count then I'd say yes he's a genuine hero

Being a human being, I sometimes put my foot in my mouth! I think, unfortunately, sometimes Trump puts his foot in his mouth. But I do like the fact that he's not, an ordinary politician, who doesn't answer questions, looks pretty, and does nothing. I do believe Trump is sick and tired of the crap that's been going on in this country, and how we are not great anymore. I'll give him my vote, anything's better than what the hell has been happening the last 8 years. They've sold this country so fast in the last 8 years, we may not be able to get out of this mess. Think about it, nukes to Iran and illegal imagrants getting free Healthcare, WTF!

Think about this:  You may agree with his stance on certain issues but do you really want someone with his personality involved in an extremely delicate situation where American lives hang in the balance?  This guy is a legend in his own mind.

Again, I say that if Obama had made the very same comment about McCain, no one would be making excuses for him.  Everyone would be enraged.  Yet, so many rush to defend Trump.  Why?  His personality type is quite possibly the most dangerous one to give power to.

Alien, you sound like my wife, she is always spouting off about something that might happen or she thinks happened or will happen.  I like to deal with what has happened.

The Dems and the Obummer administration have already referred to returning Veterans as terrorists, and are attempting to deny their second amendment rights with out due process.  To me this is worse than saying someone is not a hero.  While I respect  McCain, as a vet and a POW, i do not care for his politics, even though I voted for him.  I just could not vote for an unknown, corrupt politician from Chicago, but there were a lot of people that could.  Plus McCain had a hot VP candidate.

One of the things that the Donald has going for him at this point is that he's doing a hell of job of pissing off the liberals and the RINOs....and he's got 'em ALL running scared.

The more he opens his mouth, the more scared and pissed off they get.

As a 22year Navy Vet, I'm not offended in what Trump said regarding McCain.  Considering  that McCains father was an Admiral, the awards he received were not the same as what all other POWs received.  A person is not a Hero because they were a POW.  The real Hero might have managed to rescue all the POWs.  Even a Hero, in a military sense I think, is usually backup by a team of others.  The Obama administration traded 5 high level Taliban Leaders  and who knows what for their "Hero" and god knows what else.  Oh and, their Heros father stood at the White House speaking to the Muslims.  Bowie Bergdahl was a deserter, and his actions resulted in getting others killed looking for him.
