Sunday night my bike burnt my house -NOBODY HURT.

Was at girlfriends house in Woodstock, GA when the police called. Got to the house to find 5 fire trucks, 2 police cars, ambulance.

Garage and 3/4 of the house trash. Looks like the house will be stripped to the frame where possible and rebuilt.

Right now I'm in a Homewood Suites until I get a rental house arranged.

For those of you who think you have adequate insurance please check. You especially need cover for accommodation. My rental is going to cost about $3,250 a month for a roof over my head and rental furniture etc.

I'm adequately covered and will be OK apart from the pain of the rebuild and replacing everything.

The most painful part is the destruction of all my negatives and slides from my time as a photographer in England. I had photographed hundreds of bikes over the years for a number of magazines.

IF YOU HAVEN'T PHOTOGRAPHED EVERYTHING IN YOUR HOME GET 'ER DONE.

You WILL NOT be able to remember all you have in every close and draw.

GET 'ER DONE IMMEDIATELY. Burn to a CD or flash drive and DON'T keep it at home!!!

I've been able to recover all data on  my PC hard drive. PC tower was covered in wet insulation from the attic   

My back up hard drive was on  my kitchen table waiting to go to the safety deposit box Monday morning

As an attorney loss of paper is a nightmare so I have MANY fireproof filing cabinets

UL rated 1500 degrees for 90 minutes. They are VERY HEAVY so if they are on concrete thats the best place for them

we use dropbox for all pictures and also the cloud
great advice to copy all documents and keep off site  an old 50 caliber ammo box usually is a cheap way to save things

Regarding your suggestion, its a good one.

I take pictures of EVERYTHING every few years and keep them where they can't burn. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with [ against would be more appropriate] insurance companies for decades.
I keep full replacement cost clauses in the policies, but, considering those costs its probably cheaper to invest/save those charges in a ' just in case' account.

Rent , car, utility's, food, doctors. Everything

Ever since Mark's garage and bike burned due to a Battery Tender, this has been a reoccurring nightmare.  I don't know if that's that case, I just don't entirely trust them. I put a lamp timer in line so the can only charge a couple hours, at most.

On a similar note, fire destroyed a local business here in town several months ago.  He supposedly had great insurance.   However, he discovered, they won't pay for his inventory unless he purchases it first.   I hear that many homeowners policies are doing the same thing for lost possessions.  Video and a list of assets is a must...

He is not rebuilding now.  Too much trouble...

Thanks guys. Insurance is doing a great job.

Cleaners came yesterday and took away all  my clothes. Some can be saved, some not.

Monday a team comes to empty out the contents and another company comes to take away artwork, antique furniture etc for cleaning and restoration. Hopefully all can be saved without affecting their intrinsic value.

Went to look at a rental yesterday. A town home that must be 3,500 sq ft.

Not many rentals homes available and I don't want to live in an apartment. Had my fill of noisy neighbors over the years.

Today I will need to go buy some clothes and shoes.

Bought a laptop Thursday to keep me conecgted to the modern world.

Now starts the record keeping process for the insurance adjuster. Oh joy.

Very sorry sir. Been through a couple fires in my lifetime. One at my parent's home by lightening & another on board my vessel. Very good advice given on preparing and being ready for the worst. I wish you all the best as you rebuild and settle into the new digs in the interim. And as everyone else has mentioned....very relieved no one was hurt.

What did you mean by the 'arc' weld near the battery ?  Does the adjuster think it was caused by the battery connection ? or, something connected to the battery ?
I hope a tender was not connected to it. [ I hate tenders, especially when always connected]
