Some things are set in concrete and will never change.   I have no doubt none of the debates concerning this election has changed any person's mind that contributed to any of the political threads.   Those not interested in the political debates are not likely to even open such threads.

Was thinking of starting a poll asking if anyone has been influenced by what they read on this forum but decided that it would be a waste of time.   The candidates are too polarizing, just ain't gonna happen IMHO.   What say you?
. Rams, I say  you're mostly correct on the political candidate choice.  However, I cannot deny that my thinking on other issues here and even to some degree this particular issue have not been affected to some degree by the exposure to strong viewpoints and thoughtful responses.  Not changed mind you, but perhaps broadened with a better understanding and increased empathy for the viewpoints.

We simply need to vote for serious people who share common principles.
...  Everyone teaches their children to work hard giving all of your effort.  If you work hard you will succeed.  We teach them about money and the meaning of a dollar.  That you can't spend more than you have.  That the world isn't always fair.  ...

Unfortunately, Dr. G., the bolded term is not correct and hasn't been for a couple of generations now.  Some do but a lot don't.

Perhaps the step that did the most damage was some time back when folks who did not grow up began to have children but did not parent them.  Those children grew to have children and did not have a chance to parent as they had no model to follow.  There are a large number of children these days raising children with little or no parenting going on.

And they have been able to do just that because for much of the last few generations the government paid them more for each baby they brought into this world. That is why so many men were having babies with multiple women. I know of men who have as many as 4 children with as many as 4 different women. How do I know that? I had rental property in the past and these "families" resided in my units, and daddy would float from one unit to another. Keep in mind that "mommie" hosted more than one daddie during the month too. No way, without DNA for those kids to know who their father really is. I have been down the street at night and kids with diapers on would be in the middle of the road with no adults in sight. All of this, because the government wanted to give a free ride to anyone willing to live in these kinds of circumstances.

It was specifically the combination of deteriorated and thoughtful.  Thoughtful is never a deterioration (although I'm not certain all to which you referred was actually that thoughtful).

Perhaps "drifted off topic" would have made more sense to me.

I may get totally bombarded for this, but I can't understand how a guy like Trump, a man who has built buildings and casinos, etc, worked with architects, bankers, politicians, general contractors, etc, and who can hold so much responsibility can open his mouth and say stupid crap sometimes. I mean, he has to be way too smart to do this. He's not an idiot, however, he does it. What if, just hi pathetically, they are all in cahoots. What if the whole thing is rigged. How would we know? Maybe it's all rigged so that Hillary is supposed to win. I know I will never vote for Hillary, but from what I can see, it's almost looking like Trump is handing it to her. From what I've seen in my lifetime, as far as politics and money are concerned, I have to say nothing at this point surprises me anymore! Why would he get sucked into petty arguments and tweets and not just keep his mouth shut?

Ego.

And to be really successful in about anything, a healthy ego is a good thing.

But you have to keep a leash on it.

He's been the guy in charge of his large holdings/business for a long time, and has had his own way for a long time.  Almost no one ever tells the big boss to shut up (or tone it down).  I worked for a number of generals and colonels during service, and I can't remember anyone ever telling them to shut up (or even tone it down).

He already fired one campaign manager (for I know not what).  It is who he is.

But he really needs to try and get a self imposed governor on his talking part...... for all of us depending on him.

Its because he isn't particularly intelligent.  If he had not been born into wealth and privilege he would have ended up a car salesman or something.  It's wealth and resultant power that builds egos as it insulates one from the give and take of normal folks who don't always if ever get their way.  And before anyone mentions it, yes if Hillary had not married Bill Clinton she would not be running for president now.  Likely she would be a well paid but anonymous attorney somewhere.  I admire self made men and women who got to where they are in life by their own actions whatever those actions are. Bill Clinton and Donald Trumps father ( as far as I know) meet this criteria.  Spousal units and sponsored children not so much.

I think that very thing has been occurring to many Americans for years now. I think it's less likely to be the case this year than in years past though. Trump is the one guy the party elites and media don't want as president. Even many in the Republican dynasty would rather have a Democrat than Trump. That tells me he's not one of them, and he's proud of it.

My worry is two fold, one is for his safety. What might those holding the power behind the scenes do to keep someone who is not part of the club from gaining power?

Number two is exactly what this thread is about, his mouth. He seems to be learning quickly from his mistakes, just as someone at his level of achievement should, but, the closer to the election, the more serious putting his foot in his mouth becomes. You can bet, Hillary has bright people studying exactly how she should goad him into making these kind of mistakes. And while he's a master at business, he's new to politics and I think thoroughly dislikes politics which makes him an easier target than a career politician.

There is a small possibility but it is there - let's call it the "Brewster's Millions" scenario.  It could be a ploy to get "None of the above!" a valid ticket option, who knows?

CNN has an analysis of Trump's actions

http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/02/opinions/trump-isnt-crazy-opinion-dantonio/index.html

The writer believes that Trump shows a "winner take all, regardless of cost" mentality.  The writer carefully avoids the description but usually people use a single word for that if actually true: sociopath

I wouldn't want someone to give me their purple heart (maybe my dad's).  But under the circumstances I don't know how he could turn it down.  Veteran's know it's easier to get one handed to you than get shot for one.  He was just trying to be gracious.  He did not offend this veteran.

At that time, millions of guys didn't want to be drafted.  Millions of guys went to college or got medical deferments.  Most of them didn't run away to Canada.

I went to college for a degree (two of them), not for a 2S (college deferment).  But I didn't turn the 2S down either.  And got lucky with a high lottery number my 2d year after the 2S disappeared.

Bill Clinton (very) actively avoided the draft, and got elected twice.

He could have very easily turned it down. If he would have said to the guy "I am honored that you would give me your Purple Heart. But I can not take this from you. You earned it, I didn't. Thank you very much". Jess, he had 5 deferments at the height of the war.

He didn't lose mine.  You have already made a diagnosis by distant observing.  Your opinion is now set, Ron. I have a niece who is a psychologist in Arizona and she says it is not an exact science.

I watched the segment. We don't know the conversation that went on before or what the veteran said but it looked like he believed in Trump enough to give him one of his most treasured possession.  I see it much different from you.  Trump's reply was awkward but we all have awkward moments, He's just in the giant prejudiced spotlight.
