Thursday evening I rode with some friends. Made a mistake and crashed. Bike damaged, but repairable. I have 6 broken ribs, 3 of which are broken in multiple places. This results in "flail chest", which you can look up if you are interested.

At least you are here to tell the story. Glad it is no worse for you than that!

Am betting that the same jacket that OSS writes about would have been the ticket for your particular crash. Am starting to look at them now.

Looked it up.  That sounds very dangerous, and extremely painful.  How the heck were you even able to post this?  Sorry for your crash and the resulting agony.  Prayers for a complete recovery.

Sorry to hear of your crash. Hope and pray that your recovery goes smoother and faster than the Docs predict. And, as a glass-half-full person, I have to say that, at least, this happened near the end of the riding season. If it were Spring, it might seem even worse. Heal quickly Brother.

Dammit that sux.  I've cracked ribs hang gliding but never so bad, and that was painful enough. Heal well, take it easy - I know you will; not much you can do that doesn't hurt.

I had to google it, I'd never heard of it before. You must have hit something really HARD. Take care of yourself. I appreciate the reminder that we can make a mistake at the most inopportune time. It's very easy for me to get complacent. Your misfortune may help some of us.  coolsmiley

Dang that sounds awful. Prayers sent for you to heal quickly and completely. Have patience, I have a friend with similar injuries from a crash. I think patience and pain management were the toughest parts for him. He's not riding at this point but he is back to deer and predator hunting which is his priority anyway.

I bought the hit air after breaking a bunch of ribs in a low speed crash on oil

Nothing is foolproof, I just figured I could use all the help I could get as I dont bounce as well as I used to

I think that's the key phrase.
I t-boned a car doing 40-45 mph, flew 50' in the air at a height of 10'. Flew like Superman. Well maybe more like a frog. But I landed and tumbled. Sore elbow, 3 stitches on one knee, trashed an Arai. BUT I WAS 19.

Thank you to all for your well-wishes, prayer, and emphasis following dr's orders. Here are some individual responses:

Pappy: I’ll check out the jackets.

Old2soon: They say 6-8 weeks to recover.

Valkorado: I cannot describe how painful.

Mike in N.Y.: Unfortulately, here in the Central Valley of CA, this is the heart of the riding season. Summers too hot. Winters too wet (hopefully). Fall and spring ideal. So the glass half full is that I didn’t hurt much of anything else. Just a little road rash.

Baldo: We all ride with some margin, or we’d crash all the time. I ride with a moderate margin, but I made three miscalculations/observations at the same time. Darkening road, fast fellow-riders on adventure bikes, a bit too much excitement, and maybe some dirt on the road. Couldn’t make the turn. Tried to straighten up to ride off onto the shoulder, but didn’t get it upright enough. Bike went out from under me. Don’t know what got my ribs. Road? Handlebars?

Meathead: Glad I could be of some use. :=0

Meathead again: Do NOT make me laugh!!! I had to really concentrate to nor inflict tremendous pain on myself.

I apologize  ! It's very seldom I make anyone laugh. Wouldn't you know it would be a crippled up buddy. I truly can't imagine how much it's got to hurt. Somebody said "don't sneeze". I don't know how you stop from sneezing, but I'd try to find out.  cooldude I'm glad you are handling things with a good attitude. HANG IN THERE !

And yeah, them damn sports bikes are the devil. No way we can keep up with them. Even in my best days, there is no way I'd get a Valkyrie to hang with them.

I did the exact thing when I was 23. I hit a  Pontiac with my Norton and broke my wrist and toe. Caused me to stop riding for 25 years.  Photochaser I do hope things heal, sure sounds bad. The worst pain in my life was on a slow speed accident on my Valk. Can't go through that again and stopped riding for good. Do be careful and get well.

Once again I'd like to thank everyone for their care and prayers. I actually made it to church Sunday, where I was greeted with double-takes, looks of astonishment, and a few offers of big hugs which were definitely not welcome. I told them that my fast recovery is either due to the tremendous physical condition I was in when I had the accident or to their prayers. (I'm 5'7" and about 275 lbs.) Even my doctor is astonished.

Soon I'll be looking for parts for my '99 Tourer: Windshield, handlebar, instruments, engine guard, left saddlebag, and possibly a few other things. The tank will need to be repaired and all will need to be painted.

Thanks again to all!

am sure some of that upper chest weight helped some to avoid even a worse scenario being 275lbs. like me and 3 inches shorter.  It pays sometimes to be heavier set (sorry, did not want to make you laugh).

A guy I use to work with had a heavier set 16 year old daughter get in a serious crash doing 60 mph with a guard rail totaling the buick lucerne car veering off the road going to fast around a curve.  Besides bruises and cuts and very sore,  she lived to see another day.  The guy (parent) told me her daughter was fortunate to be heavier set otherwise more than likely more internal damage could have been done.

Got back in the saddle today. Took me this long to get her fixed. Wasn't sure I'd want to keep riding, so I just put on the helmet I crashed in. After the ride, I immediately started helmet-shopping. I guess I'm still gonna ride. :-)

I've probably seen about a dozen over the years, don't want it happening to me, glad to see you are back in the saddle again.

Did your lung make it out OK? or did you buy a chest tube?
We've put in a bunch of tubes, sometimes you just jump right in, need it now, a quick shot of Lido, cut and push. Sometimes you got a few minutes and can make you feel really good before the cut and push.
