Congrats Marines, looks like one of your best is about to be the Secretary of Defense...

Just saw that evidently Trump has decided on retired Marine Gen. James Mattis for the position. Everything I've seen about the guy looks promising!

I think somewhere Gen. George S. Patton is applauding.  Oh heck.  Maybe he is reincarnated and still with us.

And another quote from the General that makes me hopeful for the future:

“Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.”

Good military strategies are not always that hard to come up with.  Course, the devil is in the details.

Like..... Hey Diddle, Diddle, right up the middle should have ended after it failed so miserably in the Civil war and WWI.  So many leaders in those wars sucked terribly.

I like Mattis.  What's not to like?

Oh contrare. Doesn't really bother me. He seems like a qualified nominee. I'm just saying I don't think I would find pleasure in killing somebody. Maybe satisfaction, but I don't see how it would be fun. But maybe I'm wrong, like I say I haven't done it.

Being on the side of right and righteousness in battle, defeating (killing) evil is highly satisfying.... thus fun.

Perhaps not a great choice of words.... but we're not hiring him to be an English teacher (or hopefully, a politician).  We're hiring him to be our chief warrior.

Any man who enjoys his work should count himself lucky;  if he loves it, he's blessed.

Your guess is correct. And I readily admit I have no real idea how I would react in the situation. Relief, satisfaction, even pride I can see. Pleasure, enjoyment, joy not so much. I'm going to use an example of hunting only because it's the closest thing I can relate to. I in no way mean to equate young men in battle is equivalent. With all the animals I have killed there has always been a small degree of solemness and sadness.
It's apparent that this General has been a good soldier and citizen. But in general I would be worried for the mental health of a young man that took pleasure and joy from killing. My responses are not meant to cast aspersions on any of you who have been in war. I am curious though if this is a common feeling in it ?

Yes. But nothing close to anything like battle. We spent 30 days doing circles in the Indian Ocean during the failed attempt at rescuing the Iran hostages.

If, what you were hunting (Let's say a bear or mountain lion) was also intent on killing you, I assure you, you would feel great relief and joy at it's demise.

BTW, I fixed your statement.   There is a difference.

You are right, there is a difference. My bad, I should have payed more attention. I have hunted and killed bears. And there is relief for sure. But joy isn't part of it. So when you were in battle and killed people, you found it fun ? I don't know you very well Ron, but that would surprise me.

Agreed. Even in time of war, I'm not sure if we would have been threatened. We would have helicoptered them off 20 miles from shore and then went down and had dinner.

You were hunting the bear but, was the bear hunting you?    Were you and the bear involved in a battle that one of you would not walk away from?    I suspect that bear wasn't trying to get you.   There is a huge difference my friend.

Some day maybe we'll talk (in person) about that other question.

I suspect that the rest of the world is closely watching the events now occurring at Trump Tower.
There is no doubt in my mind, those that would wish us harm are now considering their positions.

Will they strike first and try to get in the first blows or stand back and back off?   Only time will tell.
But one thing I am sure of, they were much more comfortable when they thought Hillary would have the reigns.   Now, not so much and that my friends, offers me a great deal of comfort.

I too would not use the term fun related to killing anyone, but then I'm pretty sure I'm not qualified to be a good Secretary of Defense.

I like the choice.  I understand the expression.

Pfft.  Context is everything.  He had made a life of speaking to and leading Marines.  He created messages that would resonate deeply with Marines and would resonate deeply with our enemies.  In this case, he not only took the side of women's rights, he devalued an enemy who treats women with this regard, and no doubt motivated some Marines.

He's talking to a group of people who sing songs like, "Blood makes the grass grow, kill, kill, kill," and he's speaking their language.  We all interpreted this as, "I take tremendous satisfaction in killing an enemy who isn't even worthy of being called a man."

Sure, he could have chosen his words more carefully.  Does this concern me?  Not a bit.

I fought under the guy in 03 and was fortunate to hear him speak on multiple occasions.  I can't imagine there is a better pick.

I did not know Mad Dog Mattis before.  However from what I have learned he sounds an whole lot like this other extremely successful warrior that was also not know for mincing words and new how to turn a phrase or two to motivate troops

He gets quite spirited around the 3:25 mark.

As a Non-Liberal, I don't want to see us go to war either, but if we are going to war we need to fight and kick ass. Not the B.S. we have been doing the last decade or so under Liberal rule.

It sucks that we make rules to play by in a war, but we are the only ones that play by the rules. There should be only one rule in war, Kill the crap out of the enemy, any way you can.

How did we end WWII??? We killed the crap out of them on both fronts. We leveled entire cities, killed them, killed their families, women, kids, everyone. We made the price so high for them that they gave up. We need to do that again. We have quite a few B-52s and we have lots of bombs stock-piled away.

I agree with that statement 110%.  The sooner we get ISIS dead, the better the world will be.

Not so sure with our allies how he will favor but am pretty sure he has a good head on his shoulders and realizes WWIII with China, Russia, Korea and other so-called allies are not in the cards like in years past.  If anyone thinks  that ISIS is not EVIL,  they are sadly mistaken.   tickedoff

Hell yeah, in a heartbeat. Refer to my other post. Why make rules in war when we are the only one to follow them.

We catch those bastards, what do we do? We put them in our jail, but we give them prayer rugs, copies of their Quran, food that doesn't contain bacon. We have to respect them and their religion.

Meanwhile they are cutting off peoples heads, putting them in cages and setting them on fire, putting them in cages and drowning them. Executing people and plastering the videos all over social media for the world to see.

Kill them all, that's what they want to do to us.

[/quote]I am all for killing terrorists. I'm not for abandoning the Geneva Convention. We can win wars and still have morals.

I am still in favor of getting a tree shredder and when we capture one or two that we would normally blowup with bombs put them in the shredder feet first and video it and send it to the heads of terror organizations as an example. I doubt we would have to do much else and save a whole lot of lives and money. That is what they respect.

Sounds horrible doesn't it? Almost as bad as ripping apart an innocent baby that it's mother doesn't want to carry. I know, I'm a broken record. But anytime I hear someone who supports a party that condones that, your concern for the GC falls on deaf ears.
