It looks like Photobucket has gone to a fee based system.  Thier new user policy doesn't allow third party sharing unless you pay a fee; this includes all previous uploads.  So anyone that has used Photbucket in the past with your online forums the pictures have now disappeared from those threads.

Needless to say, kind of short notice on Photbuckets part.  I would call it "Ransom", no doubt about it.  It is hard to imagine anyone using them after this stunt.

That must explain why I've been seeing this all over the forum for the last week.

That happened to me where I work... Clemson University...
they have provided everyone with web space ever since
the web has existed. Recently they changed how all the URLs
look, and all the pictures in all my VRCC posts went "poof".

I got a backup of my web directory, and put a bunch of my
pictures on sites.google.com and as I came across posts
of mine with dead pictures, I edited the URLs in them.

I edited the "How I fixed my new Valkyrie" post this morning, now
it has pictures again.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,75086.0.html

So far sites.google.com (and other google hosting tools) don't
charge. Google makes money with ads and by profiling users...
I'm sure they profile the heck out of you when you look at my
pictures  Wink ... anywho... I like sites.google.com, everyone who
has a (free) gmail account has access to make their own google
sites. You can click on this link and see how I've got my pictures
organized, it is very easy to go find them again, to post a link to
one of them or whatever...

I've been using them for a long time.  I've noticed how crappy their site is now when I try to post new pics.  Time to switch, obviously.  Does anybody know if imjur (used at Reddit) will work the same way Photobucket did when you link to an image in a forum thread?

Or in other words, what's a good alternative now that Photobucket is useless?

Seems to be working just like it always has. Upload, select, share, put UBB [img] code around URL, poof Elvira, Mistress of the Bark, Destroyer of all things

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Mine is working but I wonder if is because I upgraded a while back and have been paying for extra space?

Nonetheless, this means we will not see a huge amount of pictures from many members all with a quick swipe of the pen, what comes to mind is all the -how to- mechanical shop pictures  Sad

Photobucket isn't all that user friendly anyway.

Good thing (for me) that I downloaded complete pages, not just html, on all threads I wanted to save / reference again. Don't trust outfits (like photobucket) to support any content over time - it won't disappear if I trust only myself.  And I've hosted my own pics on my web site since day one - mine won't disappear either.

From their web site

my photo usage exceeded the traffic limits years ago so I pay $25 a year, the traffic inlcudes each viewing of pages with pics that downloads. Although the latest mods they did has the page a little jumbled atm but still usable...just

A test pic to ensure its still working for me (mid winter camping)

Boy!! That is about a train wreck to get in to my account. Tried to delete my account and kept getting bombarded by ads. It wouldn't let me delete it.

Just the word "The Cloud" tells the story of public's future information.

Foo, that's black helicopter thinking... The Cloud is awesome...

We ditched the email servers and all their associated headaches, security
problems and maintenance nightmare at Clemson a few years ago. Everyone
has a gmail account. There's a roomful of smart people over at google that
keeps gmail going night and day, great spam filtering, never a problem for us.
Sure, there's a bigger roomful of people over at google doing bayesian
analysis on everyone's emails to root out spam and other kinds of
statistics to help google sell ads, but I'm happy for google that they're
selling so many ads.

"But the guys at google can look at your email!  Shocked "

Shoot, dude. When it was on our servers, I could look at your email.
