I know Hondas don't have much resale value, but, it just seems to me that our monsters should be considered a classic by now and bring a lot more money than they do.

While I agree they should, they don't at this time.  Cry

Doesn't matter what they get on the open market, Valks ARE classics and hopefully the rest of the world will understand that while we're still kicking. Roll Eyes

people think by looking at them that they weigh a lot scares them away, but actually weigh less than most v-twins.

no HD label, scares them away.
has a honda label, scares them away.

the lousy mpg, due to cheap ICM design by honda scares a lot away and many have sold because of it.

many are scared of 100hp and 100 lbsft.

the rest just want to be part of the HD crowd at any cost.

Years after they stopped making them Honda dealers still had some in the crates.  They weren't big sellers for mother Honda.  I think they have held their values reasonably well over the past several years with basically a significant decrease corresponding with the 1800cc new stuff from Honda.

We love them.  That is we have fallen in love with them but we are not in the majority.

Until they are deemed "collectable" by those who want them in their stables, we'll just have to wait.
Only recently have the available British bikes become a bit scarcer as they've been bought up at auction.
Some early Japanese models are being sought and as the years roll on maybe we'll get noticed in time.
Patience and plenty of polish. Wink

With most  1500 Valks for sale being in the US and therefore in USD , I think most Canadians would find prices high enough with the current exchange rate... Shocked
I'm not selling mine, so it's value to someone else is not something I think about...it's worth quite a lot to me...

If the prices stay where they are for a while, I may end up like a few others here and own 5.  2funny
Not so good if you aren't buying though. Used prices are down even on the Iconic American Brand in my slice of the banana republic.

In 2002 when I bought my Valkyrie I was trying to talk myself into a HD fatboy-sticker was ?18k but they were getting $30k here in Big D...the Valk was just so much better the hype just couldn't get me to pull the trigger--I rented 2 Harleys and several items vibrated themselves off-the gearing was terrible--at anything over 70 mph they were straining--you pulled up to the dealership and the parking lot was always full of people working on their HD...I was like...what hype are they buying into?..people buy Perrier too...one wack of the throttle on an open Viking header at Strokers has caused more than 1 visit to the chiropractor...if I had to put up with all the HD defiencies just for the resale....nah..enjoy the best ride you can--life's short

Bought it to ride everyday, and I hope both of us have a long and safe life. I have no plans to ever sell it.  Resale value is irrelevant to me!

I had bought a new ST1100. Good bike but it was putting my fingers to sleep.  Tried everything, nothing worked. A peculiar vibration from the V4 was playing hell with my beginning wrist arthritis.

I traded it in at a Honda dealer for a new 1997 Valkyrie standard in 1996.  No more problems. The Valk was amazing. The advertising sold me (the rooster tail skidding ad).  I had the Valk for a very long time and was never dissappointed in the power and handling.  The weight and fuel mileage was the only downside for me.  However, the fun factor more than made up for the minuses.

Most potential riders didn't buy the Valk then and that probably accounts for the fact that the Valkyries have depreciated. The death of Joe Boyd probably didn't help and Honda lost interest in pushing advertising for the best power cruiser ever.

I didn't care about resale when I bought the monster since I thought I'd never get rid of it. It just has always seemed odd to me that they don't have any resale value. For what they are bringing now I might as well just keep it, let it collect dust, pet it once in awhile or give it away.

I dont ride my Interstate to work almost ever nowadays taking the bmw (not right to subject the Valk to Bronx potholes)  but on any ride over an hour there is just no contest with its comfortable RussellDayLong seat and that SMOOOTH ride plus the 3 foot positions are a blessing to my aching hip and knees  I do think about cutting the windscreen to the top of my avatar sticker sometimes

Never gonna sell it,  I paid nothing for it as the collision coverage from the 2000 IS covered everything in 2002 for this bike with 3k on the clock, so resale means nothing to me......but I am always thinking of replacing the police bike with either a 1200 or a vrstrom type bike if the time comes I want another bike with electric windscreen, heated grips, hard bags, abs and great mileage,

If I had a big garage barn like Charliemac, Gig, Highbinder or so many others of you maybe I would be a collector but I barely have room now in my puny 1 car garage for the bikes and lawn stuff

I paid $10,500 for my 98 Tourer in 99. HD wanted $16,000 for the Road King I went to town to get. That was $2000 over MSRP just for the privilege of buying HD. Honda guy sold the Valk to me at $2000 under MSRP. I've not regretted that in 157,000 miles. If I'd bought that Road King, with the same mileage,  it'd be worth about  $4610 according to NADA. So, I would have lost more in depreciation than the Valk COST. No regrets.
I bought a low mileage 2001 Tourer this March for $3900 (15,000 miles). I plan to put lots of miles and run gobs of gasoline through both of them.

Actually did give my Tourer away to my daughter and son in law when I picked up my Interstate.
Just had no room for both and a 1300 Vtx, a car, lawn mower, snow blower, and the wife's garden stuff. If I get rid of the wife's garden stuff I could get 3 more Valks in the garage. But that is another issue.

I bought my first Valkyrie, a Tourer in Sept 1998, got it right ergonomically perfect and it got totaled with 41K in 2003, bought my next Valk, another '98 Tourer in '04. Transformed it into a bobber. When my wife started thinking about getting back on another bike, we decided to go a different route and got a sport tourer, very heavy on the sport part, a KTM Super Duke GT, note the passeneger grab handle mounted ton the fuel tank. If I had the room, I would not hesitate to get another one...probably and Interstate...here is a pic of the 2 wheeled fun rides taken from the inside of my 4 wheeled fun ride, '92 Mustang (daily driver status until released to ride)

I do not think Valk prices are too bad as compared to say a 1997-2000 honda goldwing being lower in value by say 2-3 grand.  If I cannot get 7K for my I/S with 36K miles on it,  I will just keep it.  Most say 6K, but is worth more to me than that since NOTHING else under 6K is our there I would want to have over the Valk I/S.

Agree with garage space,  I have 2 big 2-up ATV's and 3 cycles and lawn mowing/garden stuff in my std. 2 car garage with 4 cars sitting outside or on the street.  Wintertime is fun to get 3 cycles in the garage with 2 cars.

I thought all 2003's were black and standards, am I wrong?

That's a '97 unless he changed the paint.  He might get half what he's asking for it.

Had an interesting weekend.  My neighbor had his 2 brothers come out to visit from Milwaukee.  Brought their Harleys on a trailer.  Of course.  Very nice looking bikes - one is a trike.  Said I'd take them for a ride on some favorite front range twisties.  The ride starts about 50 miles away, ride length is 96 miles.  Both Harleys under 10,000 miles.

I showed them the nickle trick.  Mark borrowed the nickle and tried it on his Fat Boy (I guess).  Actually it is unusual in that the engine does not visibly vibrate while running.  He was having trouble getting the nickle to stand up - hard to find a flat spot I guess. He was doing it while it was already running.  I said, place the nickle then start it.  He said no, it shakes when started.  I said if he can make it happen, I'll buy his lunch.  He gave up after 5 minutes.

Eighteen miles into the ride, we got to the top of Golden Gate Canyon and Joe on the trike was yelling, "DON'T STOP MY CLUTCH IS OUT!!!"  Too late, I was stopped waiting for them, having passed a slow cage but they didn't have the power.  He had lost clutch disengagement. So we stopped, opened the master reservoir, fluid was sufficient, it was leaking and ruining the paint. Fiddled with it a bit and it started working again.  I guessed it had air in it which was compressing and it had burped out. Fluid was black.  This bike has 6,000 miles on it.  We continued on the ride, Peak-to-Peak highway S past Blackhawk, old Hwy 40 E to El Rancho for lunch.  By now the bike had fixed itself.

Continued S down Kerr Gulch to Kittridge, W up Bear Creek Canyon to the historic Little Bear Saloon for them to check out the environs - they want to sell their friends to come out here; this is a great venue for a classic biker saloon with live bands like the Allman Brothers, John Prine, Willie Nelson and so on. Continued W then S up Little Cub Creek and over Bear Mountain, Stanley Park, Turkey Creek, City View, through Pleasant Park around Sampson Mountain, down the High Grade and Deer Creek Canyon.  A superb set of tight twisties and sampling of the finest on the Front Range. The rain had slowed up some of the enjoyment but the monsoon has arrived so any extended ride is going to run into that.  We went around Chatfield reservoir past Martin Marietta, Titan Rd to Sante Fe and hit the worst Fri eve rush hour traffic I've seen in years.  Stop and go for a good five miles until we got to Sedalia.  Mark's Fat Boy, approaching 10,000 miles, wouldn't idle.  Kept dying.  He nursed it along and when we got to Castle Rock and stopped for gas, it wouldn't start. I offered, I have a tow strap if we need it - or maybe we could push start it.  He got it running before he had to suffer the ignominy of being towed by a Honda. All the while Jade was just humming along and pretty sure, getting fed up with these so-called motorcycles that keep breaking down.

Later, at Jack's place, my neighbor, their brother and our starting point, four recent Army vets in their 20's were all gawking at the BIG BIKE Jade that sounds "like a hot Porsche" (it has my pipes of course) and with a killer stereo - at their age they were unfamiliar with it though they ride sport bikes - and ignoring the gorgeous look of the Harleys which kept breaking down.  They were stunned, the bike cost me MUCH less than the Harleys at $4100, is 21 years old with more than 5 times the mileage (42k now, nothing in the Valk world), twice the power still looks new, is just broken in, and I have four of them. And is the only one there you can depend on to get you there.  What's that they say, 90% of Harley's built in the last 30 years are still on the road... the other 10% made it home.

Mark was saying he wanted to take it to the local dealer for some work on the injection - I gave him a can of Berryman's (he didn't know about it, I said it's highly recommended by our community of gearheads, better and cheaper than Seafoam) to try first, maybe he can save himself the trouble and expense of the dealer.  Meanwhile Sat AM Joe had taken the trike to the dealer, they simply changed the DOT4 in the brake and clutch systems and all was well with the world.

They were also stunned at how hydrogen peroxide removes bugs.  You'd think a couple bikers from FL and WI would be all over removing bugs.  But then they don't get many miles under the belts being on Harleys.  It's mostly short poker runs and the rest of the time, on a trailer.

It's amazing to me what Real Bike riders will put up with to get to wear the T shirts and be in The Club.

I zoomed on the frame tag, it is indeed a 2003; meaning it started it's life as a black standard.  I have a feeling he added red and white Tourer bags, then painted the bike to match.  Or switched out tins with a red and white.

I''ve seen just now 2 Valk I/S's on craigslist asking still 8.5-8.9K for them locally.  Not sure either one will get it or even over 8K, but 7K for mine seems reasonable then, right????????

Another local Valk I/S is asking 4K, but needs some work been sitting outside, etc.

Proves you can ask whatever you feel it is worth, does not mean we will ever get it though....

Darn HD's on the road today made me appreciate what I have when I blew by the group putzing 50-55 mph tops, me doing over 90... cooldude

7K?  No, not in today's market unless you find someone who wants it badly enough to buy it despite the many others at lower prices.

Any full sized cruiser will do 90 mph.  Choosing to run at a higher speed is not an indicator of a better bike.

A good friend of mine has a 99 Heritage Classic w/48K.  Nice one owner clean bike that has never been treated badly.  Spoked wheels, screen and bags.  She's a beauty.

He's had it up for 6k at a local bike shop that gets decent traffic and no interest.

He dropped it to 5.5k, hoping he can move it.

My point being, it's not just Valks that are not bringing what owners want.

Bought my Interstate new in March 2001 (leftover 99) from Riverfront Honda in Gallipolis, Ohio.  They had 14 new in box and 10 assembled on floor.  Couldn't give them away.  Sticker was 14,500 but I paid 11k and got 500 in Honda bucks.  Evilbay dealer in La has three 2014 NEW with warranty for 10 grand.  All three colors..

Dealers have new everything left over. HD crowd dying off, Goldwing riders getting older, $$$ getting tight! Keep your Valkyrie and buy two more for the future!!  cooldude

this guy bought this bike last month for $5500 plus lots of parts.
now selling for $6500
https://baltimore.craigslist.org/mcy/d/honda-valkyrie/6213742830.html

here is response from craigslist poster. the org sale ad back in may the bike had a corbin seat. came with the oem seats

Good evening:

Correct you are and very attentive also. I must compliment you on your
observations. A brief history on the bike from what I have gathered:

1: Original owner in New Hampshire, sold it in 2010 with 16,575 miles. He
apparently did all of the modifications and changes as listed in my current
posting.

2: 2nd owner purchased the bike in August of 2010 and rode it only 885 miles
in approx. 7 years. In conversation he advised he kept the bike stored in
the shed in his yard and covered it but was injured at work (back) and could
no longer ride, at least for no distance. He also advised he was planning to
sell his home and move to Colorado.

3: I purchased the bike this past May and have put a little over 700 miles
on it as of this message. I have spent some money on it, oil/filter, coolant
change, carburetor work, new passenger seat (the one I received with the
purchase was not correct) along with other small expenditures, tax, title,
tag, inspection, insurance etc.

That is why I have the listed price of $6,500 but then also mention "Best
reasonable offer". I personally have nothing to hide and the reason for this
posting and sale is related to other financial obligations and with the
other bikes I currently own, as they say sometimes, "Last hired/first
fired"...so this one has to go, sad to say.

Thanks for your inquiry and interest. If you have any further inquiries or
interest, do not hesitate to contact me.

have a local lead on a 1999 black Valk I/S with 83K miles tipped over front fairing and rearside saddlebag is cracked been tipped over and sitting outside under tarp over 1  year now not running with gas tank off as well and appears to be missing side cover.  Will let it go for 2500 NO less she said since before it got tipped over one year ago, it ran well only one owner bike.  Owner has brain damage and not easily talkable about it though she said from another incident not related to tipping the bike over.

Bone stock though no upgrades that I see done from the one pic to it, but since only 30 miles away,  I may go look at it this coming weekend since if can get the gas tank back on dealing with the major front fairing crack/rearside bag cracked/scratched,  and it fires up,  will have to find a guy who can repair cracked fiberglass??

She will not go lower than 2500 cash deal though she said to me on the phone.  Where to put it though if I try to cough up say 2K cash since doubt she will sell it as is for 2500 to anyone who is wanting a NOW running bike.

With most  1500 Valks for sale being in the US and therefore in USD , I think most Canadians would find prices high enough with the current exchange rate... Shocked
I'm not selling mine, so it's value to someone else is not something I think about...it's worth quite a lot to me...
I agree. I've put too much time and love into mine. My grandson already staked claim to it when he gets older I will pass it to him.

Now that is interesting.  The same person in this one thread above said his bike is worth $7,000 but a similar machine that needs $1,000 worth of repair is worth less than $2,500.

Perspective does interesting things depending upon the side on which we stand.   Wink

BTW, ABS.  Don't go after fiberglass repair.

been tipped over huge crack in front I/S fairing and crack in side saddlebag.  Doubt ABS can be repaired that bad of a crack?  Am sure over 1K in repairs other missing parts as well like front turn signal and mirror, missing side cover, and who knows what else?  Gas tank is off not on as well been sitting outside for over 1 year under tarp as well so who knows how much?
