I know it's not mine to judge but I do any way.  If it's a stop sign I disagree with bring there I do the California stop thing.  That is rare but there is one such stop sign in my neighborhood.  All other stop signs I stop put the left foot down look both ways twice and then proceed just like we're supposed to.

I've tried to put my foot down several times but each time I do, the wife over rides me.   tickedoff

Oh, stop sign stuff?   More often than I care to admit.  Wink

It depends where the sign is;  population and traffic and cops, and (up)hills.

I can stop completely and not put my foot down (usually)(but when you blow it, you do a good impression of a drunk driver  Grin).  I don't stop for long though.

Whenever there are other car(s) at or near the sign, then I put my foot down (so we can play the you go, no you go, no I insist).  If no one is there, I usually stop with my foot up.  Briefly.

Once in a while, just to change things up, I don't completely stop, but tap my toe down so it looks better from a distance.

I was once pulled over:  You didn't put your foot down.  But I stopped.  No you didn't.  Did too.  Did not.

If this goes to court, ties almost always go to the policeman (and this is a good thing to keep in mind).

Depends. Many require me to plop out both feet and look both ways
twice. Some need no feet to go down... I don't think I use just
one foot much...

Not in a hurry anymore, seems I have to check about three times to make sure no cars are coming. Don't know why that is, but I have to be more careful now days or I will pull out in front of someone. Distracted? Not sure, maybe someone else here understands. Also have to stop at or before the stop sign, was fined 190.00 in a little town. It was a trap and I had been stopped behind two other cars and moved up one at a time, but when my turn I stopped past the line so as to see better and the police lady was watching from a parking lot. Tried to argue with her and later the judge but no success. So I nearly always put my foot down.

I find myself doing the same thing as I have aged, at least twice looks both directions even though I have 20/15 vision, like I do not trust my original look.  However at 4 way stops, pretty common in the corn country I ride, many times do not tap down unless the corn blocks the view.  That indeed was a BS ticket.  Little towns always scheming for revenue.  Covington, Oh police got me last summer for running a red light, by changing from amber to red in less than 2 seconds with cop hiding before daylight in a used car lot.

Almost always.

I trust people so little I also look both ways when I'm crossing a one way road.

In fact I'll DOUBLE check the direction no one should be coming from just because that's where the bastard that's gonna take me out will probably be coming from.

Depends on the stop sign. The ones in my neighborhood - I look and if something is coming, stop - otherwise keep going.

Everywhere else - I stop, put at least one foot down, and look before taking off again. On those situations where I can't see - stop at the line, then slowly go up to where I CAN.

Also - In NC, if a stop LIGHT is not registering a MC is there, we are allowed to go against a red light (after stopping, and doing due checking for traffic - in other words - you are not allowed to just blow through it). Any other states have this as well ?

While in WY many years ago, I had the opportunity to received instructions on how to give driver license examinations, what to look for, from a WY driver license examiner.  He was saying according to the law, one should stop behind the stop sign.  The advance to see if anyone was coming, as being behind most stop signs don't allow you to see both directions.   So stopping where you can see is not the legal point to stop.  The discussion on whether it is required for a foot to be put down was not covered as this instruction was for 4 wheeled vehicles.

As far as putting one's foot down at a stop sign.  Sometimes yes, sometimes on.  Usually only one foot, left one as the right foot is on the brake.  Right hand is one the twisty ready to go if needed.  Occasionally lose balance and right one comes down, and do look like drunker.

Stopping (completely) long enough to look both ways twice is just good driving.  A moving vehicle or pedestrian might be hidden behind something or blending in with the background during the first glance, but visible the second time you look.

To answer Willow's question, 95% of the time.  I'm trying to make that 100%.

Regarding stop lines, it just makes good sense to not overshoot them, for many reasons:
  • It yields the crosswalk completely to pedestrians.
  • It allows you space to move forward if emergency circumstances require it.
  • It gives traffic coming from the right the space they need to make a left turn.
  • It gives cross traffic margin for error or emergency manoeuvres.
  • It allows you margin for error if you find stopping traction wasn't as good as you expected.
If the stop line position doesn't give you a good enough view of cross traffic, stop at the line, then move forward and stop again where you can see what you need to.

When in the rain at a stop both feet down. Seen that harely shuffle thing here in the Sho Me a time or 3.  Roll Eyes Broken bones at my age-73 feb 18-are in the freakin NO FUN ZONE. RIDE SAFE.

I often, maybe most of the time, don't put a foot down at a stop sign, sometimes not at a red light.  Approaching an intersection I check both ways.  I do so again at the stop.  If there is another vehicle I intend to wait upon I will put down a foot to demonstrate that I am not proceeding.  I consider bringing the bike to a stop without placing a foot on the ground an exercise in controlling the motorcycle.

Clever answer, Gig, and correct.   Wink

Only if I stop and cannot go immediately.
In my neck of the woods (very rural) most do not stop for stop signs anyway.

I'd say 50/50 but it really depends on the intersection. if there is full clear view in all directions it's usually a rolling stop.

anything with an obstruction of view is a full stop, feet down.

anything on a hill or a bend in the road is a full stop.

a spot with gravel or sand on the road is also a full stop.

I do the same thing. Yo never know when a person on a bicycle is riding the wrong way on a one-way street. Almost nailed one years ago.
I used to take a quick look and then go. Now I come to a complete stop, look both ways twice and then go if it is clear.
I do not want to make an incorrect quick decision about pulling out in front of traffic.

What pisses me off is the people that stop a car length in front of the white line. Yes we have a lot of stop signs with white line around here.
