Best Adhesive to attach mount to dash. Thanks solved!

Hello,

Advice needed on the best adhesive to attach a quarter sized plate to my dash.  Im not concerned if the plate ever comes off the dash, but im looking for death grip type of adhesive steel to vinyl.

Have tried gorilla 30# adhesive and other 2 sided tape with very mild success.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Try a slow drying 2 part epoxy.  The slower it cures the more permanent it will be. I have found that a 4 hour epoxy works well for most of my needs. A guyat works makes knives and uses it for the handles.  He said he uses a 10 hour epoxy.

Michael, I'm still confused.  What Valkyrie has a vinyl dashboard?  You mean the inside of an interstate fairing?  A vinyl tank bib?  

Reason I ask,  I'm not sure I'd ever want an expensive piece of electronics glued to vinyl.  If I knew exactly what you wanted to attach it to, I might have a better idea than glue/epoxy.  For instance, many mount such things to a RAM mount on the handlebars or the Valk riser single top clamp.  I've had a RAM mount, and mounted several small things to the inside of my interstate faring with small screws, inside out.  Others stick their electronics inside a tank bib pouch.

just be sure both mating surfaces are clean (lacquer thinner will do that)

I have also used the 3M tape, but again-clean both surfaces real good

It will stick to textured vinyl very well, after cleaning both surfaces with lacquer thinner. Amazon will hook you up. You can get by with 1/2" width roll just lay it in rows on your device, then trim with x-acto before you remove the tape backing. I would take heat gun or hair dryer and warm up the surface before application. I'd recommend not using the clear VHB, use the foam type, it will conform to the grain in the vinyl. It's not your regular foam tape, this is made for exterior applications.
I secure hems on vinyl canvas for outdoor banners all the time.

In 2003 I bought a Jeep Wrangler with a fiberglass hard top.  I ordered a GPS mount that already had the double sided tape on it and they said it created a permanent bond, just peel and stick, although I had my doubts.  I attached it to the underside of the roof just above the rear view mirror and 15 years later it is still there, it never budged even with the sun blasting it from the other side.  Sometimes this stuff works.

I would try shoe goo.  Hard to beat that stuff for this type of thing.

Yup, the foam 3M VHB is the way to go. Check out McMaster-Carr for all the different varieties. Some even require an activator, but with proper prep you can stick a mushroom to a hard boiled egg

No, but the salesman said... Seriously, they make a lot of different versions of the Very High Bond (VHB) double-sided stuff, sheets, rolls, foam, etc. Probably the most common usage is the chromed plastic lettering (and little car dealer plates) attached to car/trucks, I worked for a place that was a parts supplier to GM and we switched one assembly from a sonic welded plastic part to one held by a double-sided VHB rubber rectangle. Had them die-cut by some private supplier that stamped 'em out by the thousands from a giant 2" wide roll that looked to be around a mile long. Due to the vibration, it'd probably be best to go with a very thin foam variety, maybe the thickness of a penny. If you're going to be mounting something with buttons you have to press, maybe contact 3M for a recommendation on what to use. Been probably 20 years since I dealt with this stuff, but 3M used to be very good about application advice. Maybe check for a current email address or phone number for consumer service.

VHB will definitely hold, but because it's harder to find, I would try 3M emblem tape, which should be available from most auto parts stores, and is very good stuff.

Good point, I forgot to mention that. Also forgot that most any good auto body shop should have both VHB, the emblem tape and/or probably whatever else has been invented in the last decade or two, as well as the prep materials to get it done. Compared to buying a whole roll/sheet etc, just driving up to a shop with it in your hand and asking "How much to do this all permanent-like?" may be the way to go. Annnnd, if it falls off, you can go back and ask if they have a Plan B?

I don't recall packaging in Canada with Spanish. Now English, French, and Spanish on everything ?

Canadians have this awesome thing called the interweb, with which we can retrieve information from pretty much anywhere in the world! I used it to learn about an auto parts store in 97BLKVALK's area, and the store provided me with a picture of the product they sell. Why they have English and French on something sold in the US when Spanish would be sufficient is a mystery to me.

There's your VHB. Shelf life will deter initial stickiness, but warm the surface before you apply it and it will restore the adhesion. I buy it from sign suppliers in large rolls, when using fresh stock, you better place it where you mean to the first time.
