Petcock strainer question

Greetings!  I took my petcock off the tank the filter did not come out with it.  How do you remove it?  It obviously needs replacing as the petcock was fouled.

Do you mean the plastic net sheathing wrapped around it is  came off and is in the tank? I guess you just have to fish it out with something. A new petcock comes with a new filter. To save some money and have one less vacuum line you can replace it with the Honda non vacuum petcock part #16950-MAL-603. You just need to make sure you shut it off obviously. Here's a photo of my old one and new ones you can see the ethanol does a number on the plastic.

The base of the filter tube can get stuck in the hole.  I use an EZ-out to gently grab it so it comes out.

Not so sure ethanol is the culprit.  Those filters turned brown like that before ethanol was blended into gasoline.

I have used a tap of appropriate size lightly screwed in to remove the strainer.

If it's at the hole like normal simply grab it with a needle nose pliers. Works every time for me

is the Interstate strainer the same as the Tourer/Standard?  The part number for the Interstate strainer is no longer available.  The tour/standard is still available.   Anyone have experience with this?

The part # for the Petcock Screen Set is different between Standard / Tourer and the Interstate.  Megazip.net shows both available.

I have a 2003 Valkyrie Standard.  I have never played with the Petcock.  I have seen several "things" about replacing the petcock to ensure it will work when needed. 

So, my question is, well are:

1.  Can some provide me the correct part number or a replacement petcock that will not use the vacuum line. I assume that is the best option.  I saw this part number above.

Is the brass tube and screen the same as the Valk one?

The height of the brass tube determines when to switch to reserve, correct?

The vacuum valve is a safety feature, not a convenience feature.  If the bike is down in an accident, the "tip over" switch stops the engine and there is no vacuum to the valve.  The fuel flow stops and can't drain out through the carbs. The owner's manual tells us to turn off the (vacuum) valve when shutting off the engine, so we should be doing that already.

The vacuum line from #6 cylinder to the fuel valve is easy to replace.  The "cover set" that replaces the valve diaphragm is also easy to replace.  These are things to consider before you retire the vacuum valve.

I believe it has a slightly smaller reserve. The strainer might be taller too but it fits no problem, ran it all last year.

The IS and Tourer/Standard tanks are different sizes.  I think this is the reason for 2 different petcocks.  Maybe so they both have the "same" reserve as the tank sizes are different.
