jack adapter

I have a new tire to put on, a Pirelli Angel GT (Spec. A)... in these pictures my
old tire doesn't look bad, but it is to the wear bar in the center... I guess my
32 mile round trip to work is mostly on sandpaper  ;) ...



Anywho...

I needed to make a jack adapter, here's how it started...



This first part goes here:



The motor is not really a flat surface there, so I beveled the edges of the first part
as shown with a belt sander to get a good mating surface...



Once I had the adapter built, it and the jack didn't really fit under the bike anymore,
so I cut one of these old two-inch-thick mill boards I have so that I could ride
the bike up on it and yank the middle part out...







I jacked it up to the second lock on the Sears aluminum jack... first time I've used
this jack, I like it a lot  :cooldude: ... the second lock will probably be high enough.

It is lowered back on the ground now, I'll go back at it tomorrow, I think it will be
plenty steady with some jack stands at the engine guards to thwart any potential
tilting to either side...

I will have a look in the manual and see how many motor mounts and type the bike has. I wouldn't want to damage anything as the motor takes the weight of the bike instead of the bike taking the weight of the motor.

This is true...

We jack our regular Valkyries up at the motor, though there's more surface area:



Some people put belly pans on their Goldwings and just jack them up on that  :o ...

I hope this is OK...

Yeah, those tin plates attach di-rectly to the main load-bearing parts of
the plastic cowling  ;)

I have a belly pan, and I would never jack the bike up on it.  Too flimsy, and not connected to anything solid.

I put on a centre stand off a Goldwing, and although it doesn't lift it up all that high.  I can put a couple of pieces of plywood to raise it up more if needed.



If global warming is happening...why is it so cold up here?

I wish I could do something like that... it is so easy to take the rear fender section off my
regular Valkyrie, I barely jack it up an inch, the wheel just kind of rolls out... I have one
of those quick-disconnect kits from Rattlebars that gets the bags and rails off easy.

There's way too much involved in removing the saddlebags and sub-frames and
plastic-push-pin-attached fender on the new Valkyrie to deal with getting the wheel
out that way... I just hope the jack stands under the engine guards provide some
added stability for this plan...

If you have a belly pan and jack it up on that it supports the bike with the headers and engine. The belly pan doesn't have the strength obviously so it rely s on these points. I was talking to one of the guys at the meet awhile back and he stated that the wings get jacked up the same way with no problem. I just cannot seem to be comfortable with this though it seems wrong. A metal adapter for the jack shouldn't be hard to build one that supports under the shock mount and the front engine guards.

Finished up today with no troubles...

At first I wondered how I was going to get the lug nuts off, I couldn't
budge them with the half inch ratchet handle... no prob with the
breaker bar, though... leverage is a good thing...



It is awesome to work on a wheel with no rotor to worry about  :cooldude:



No caliper to worry about, no axle, just a few lug nuts...



Got 'er done, put up all the tools and stuff and took a ride down the street...
wimped out on putting in the ride-on, I'll do that tomorrow...  :)



Good to go for another couple of thousand miles  :o ...

All joking aside, this thread is going to come in very handy. I need to buy one of the belly pans to start. I also have some upcoming work that would be a lot easier with the bike lifted. Thanks for the photos and the descriptions!

Here you go Ledany.  It doesn't look it, but the wheel is about 1/4" above the floor.

You can buy the centre stand new for about $100, and the side shield with the indent for $125 new or look on eBay like I did, and pick one up for $40 off a Wing..

Can you give me the sizes of wood you used and the measurement  of the pice that's cut out for the engine ?

My initial jack adapter was not so good... it touched the rear at the shock
pivot and the bike wasn't stable enough to work on comfortably. I went
back and made a bscrive-inspired jack adapter, it is easy... it touches
the rear at the two centerstand lugs (we have goldwing frames
without centerstands) and is very stable. At the front there's just two
small one-by boards that cradle the engine. There's two one-by boards
because the bottom of the engine is not flat.
