DFW Wrench Party - 5 Dec 2009 - Petcock, Air Filter, Vacuum Line rebuild/replace

It's time to work out the final details for our next Wrench Party, and judging by recent posts here and on the Tech Board I believe many of us will benefit from a petcock rebuild and vacuum line replacement.  While we're in there, we may as well R&R our OEM air filter elements or service our K&N filters.  Another consideration would be to install an inline fuel filter and a quick-disconnect to our fuel lines.  This would also be a good time for anyone planning on going Pingel. 

Here is a list of OEM parts (taken from the 2000 GL1500C - they should be the same for all Valkyries).

Reference #4, Screen Set, 16952-MZ0-003 - Some have gotten away without replacing these.  However, if we open one up, find that we need one and don't have one, we're fubared.

Re Vacuum Line, this should be available for individual purchase at the dealership, we can buy in bulk if we know about how many bikes will be serviced (3.5' - 4' required per bike) OR we can all show up with the same stuff by purchasing the various kits we want to install from fellow Valkyrie enthusiast, Red Eye Technical Services at http://sites.google.com/site/valkparts/.  I have an email contact working to make sure an order would contain everything we'd need.

Re Quick-Disconnects, Red Eye has a popular quick-disconnect (and an inline fuel filter kit) and Jeff K uses product from http://www.jiffy-tite.com/motorsports.cfm?sublevel=399&subpage=397.  I emailed him for specs, but his bike is blown and has EFI, so his application is significantly different.  I have an email contact working with Jiffy-Tite to see if they can specify the needed parts.

I'll post order details as soon as I receive them.  We should have plenty of time to get everything if we don't dawdle.

Yes Chuck.  You need the cover set to rebuild the petcock itself.  Your screen might not need replacing, but at the age of all our bikes, the screen set @ approximately $16.00 is cheap.  And, it includes the o-ring that seals the petcock to the tank.

Summary of my email exchanges with Red Eye

Q. If I want to replace all the vacuum lines on my 2000 Standard, which kits do I need to order?
A. The stock Valk will take an OEM Petcock vac line, a Pair Valve vac line, and a set of three vac caps.

Q. Does your frankenfilter kit replace all of the oem fuel like from petcock to carburetors?
A. Yes, Frankenfilter replaces all the stock fuel line and the tee fitting.

Q. I have an auxiliary power plug mounted to the same hanger the fuel selector switch is mounted to.  It is just below and to the rear of the dial/selector.  Will your quick-disconnect mount transversely or does it have to go front-to-rear?
A. The quick disconnect only goes in loop-up or loop down.  Loop-up has the least intrusion into the area below the petcock, but it may have problems clearing an air bubble if you get one.  When you install it loop-down, you get to pick an angle within about 10 degrees of straight down. So, if something juts in from the left motor mount, you might still be able to clear it.  Horizontal mounting of the fuel loop is just plain impossible.

Q. Re the QC, what is the purpose of the loop?  Does it provide slack to work with, or is there another purpose?
A. LOOP: The forward distance between the petcock nipple and the end of the fuel hose is zero, and into that distance we want to put a two inch long disconnect fitting. So, a loop is required to get behind the fitting, which we put behind the oem fuel hose.  This allows an inline fuel filter to be placed somewhere on the OEM fuel hose, without any effect on the connect/disconnect procedure.  It is OK for the fuel filter to be put into this inaccessible place -- It is going to be left alone for several years, and it is accessible from above, with the tank off, when it is time.

   NO LOOP: Some people have put a disconnect fitting directly in front of the petcock nipple, but then the disconnect is hidden in the deep dark area by the spark coils.  It is really hard to connect and disconnect in there, as only one hand will fit and there isn't any slack in the fuel line.  You have to lift the back end of the tank to get the slack, and then guide the disconnect as you lower the tank down.  Red Eye thinks this is an inadmissible connect/disconnect procedure.  Also, there is no room for an inline fuel filter in addition to the disconnect fitting.  You can have one or the other, but not both.  Red Eye thinks this is an unacceptable compromise.

For those considering installing their own inline fuel filter and/or a Jiffy-Tite fuel line quick-disconnect

After much consultation (Tech Board, phone calls to extensive Valkyrie knowledge and dealership service dept, specs for commonly-used inline fuel filters, and visual inspection comparing a piece of 3/8th to oem), I'm calling the fuel line 5/16ths. 

The inline fuel filter will be a Purolator F10024, or equivalent. 

The Jiffy-Tite straight, hose barbed, plug & socket (operates like an air chuck) quick-disconnect will be comprised of (1) 21505 and (1) 22505 (please confirm these numbers when you order).  These come standard in gold and black and ARE valved on both ends (won't leak when disconnected).  A 90-degree setup will have suffix E.  A 45-degree setup will have suffix D.  An all-black setup will have suffix J.  Non-valved is also available on request, but that doesn't suit our application.  These aren't cheap - about $40.00 + shipping if I took notes correctly - but will last as long as our Valkyries. 

I know there is not a lot of room under the tank, but don't know if a 90- or 45-degree setup would make things easier.  Input?

And don't forget the bike / mouth count.      I'll be one bike & one mouth.

I am new to this site and still learning about my Dragon. I have plans for this weekend so I cant make the wrench party but I am going to try and drill out my pipes tomorrow or sat, weather permitting and mechanical ability cooperating. I am going to try and trailer her down to Galveston this next week and ride her around the beach for a bit... I hope the weather cooperates down there. Look forward to meeting some of you the next opportunity I get.. Maybe at the Toy Run? Keep the rubber side down. If any of you have any tips on the pipes it would be greatly appreciated.. I am tired of hearing my overpowered sewing machine..

I wouldn't drill out my stock pipes if I were you. Once drilled and you don't like the sound, you've ruined the pipes. Try some Cobra 6X6 drag pipes and keep your stockers if you ever get tired of the Cobra's. The Cobra's have a good sound and if you really want loud you can pull the baffles on the Cobra's and you will lose your hearing. LOL.  Welcome to the best club around. Check You Tube for a video of a Valkyrie with Cobra 6X6 drag pipes so you can hear how they sound.

Six Guns beat me to it.  Before you "molest" your stock pipes, find some Cobras to try.  If you like the sound(s), you'll get more $$ for unmolested stock pipes than you will for ones with cut piggies / drilled baffles / etc. 

My Valkyrie had the Two Brothers 6x6 pipes on it when I bought it.  They are really loud, and it was fun for a while, but I'm now running stock.  What a relief to my ears, my neighbors, and everyone riding behind me...

I would share Victor and David's opinions on keeping stock pipes stock for another reason. Other than the increase in noise - worse if you wear a full face helmet - you do get an awful backwash in a full face helmet - you will loose about 8 horse power in power. Not a big deal lose on a 1520cc power plant until you go back to stock and then it is as though you have got a totally different, quicker bike between your legs.

You might consider trading your stockers for some that are already drilled or the Cobras or Two Bros? Welcome to the insanity. ~Jeff

I think I fixed it now.. I had a great time in Galveston. I trailered the bike down because I wasnt sure how the weather was going to be and I was hoping to get some fishing in while I was there but didnt get to because it was cool. I had a great time. I went to Crows for a birthday party.. I got talked into dressing as Santa for the party.. What a wild time that was.. LOl Was nice to get alot of nice looks and waves from the kiddos.. nothing like Santa on a Dragon to get lots of attention.. Sorry I didnt get the invite for lunch while I was down there, It would have been nice to meet you... I did enjoy the Spot while I was there. Maybe next time.. Have a great Christmas... if anyone is interested, they are having a big party at cuttin loose in burleson on saturday. I will be riding in the Toy Run on Sunday I hope.. Probably in my santa suit.. Looking forward to a great ride..
