44 from White River is very rough some locals say. It was rough 2 yrs ago when I went. They say avoid it on a bike. Lot of road construction at White river and north to Murdo.

From devils Tower take 112 to Alzada MT and then 212 to billings. Its alot faster and 112 was paved about 5 yrs ago. Just make sure you get gas in Broadus. Cool bar in Alzada. To early for topless Tue tho  Cool

Beartooth may open but there will more than likely be walls of snow alongside the blacktop.

Regarding Beartooh Pass......   If you don't mind doing a search, you will find up to date videos on YouTube regarding Beartooth and the snow plowing/road status.  Its almost real time.

Here is a link to the latest one (three hours old but recorded yesterday).

https://youtu.be/2NFosZgvD8s

And just in case you wanted to see what it was like in 2009 (maybe a week earlier ) and then in 2015 (about the same time.).  Grin Grin Grin

In 2009 I was not real well equipped for videos on the road.  But in 2015, it got better.

Britman,
IIRC, you'll be passing very close to Big Brutus, IHMO worth the short side trip to see.
https://www.bing.com/search?q=big+brutus+kansas&form=ANNTH1&refig=678eacb42a8647a0a60cf02d06aaeac7&sp=2&qs=LS&pq=big+brutus&sk=PRES1LS1&sc=8-10&cvid=678eacb42a8647a0a60cf02d06aaeac7

Brutus is worth seeing and one hell of a shovel.
BTW, when you go through El Dorado, wave to my Mom and give Valkhound a shout out.  Wink

I guess we were lucky the two times we rode Beartooth.   Early June both times, 2009, 2015.   Just looked at YouTube and there is still plenty of snow to be plowed.

Was hoping to get the chance to ride it, managed to score a campsite in Grant Village on the 17th, looks like I may have to take the low road.

I keep tweaking my homeward route to see sites already visited and new sites. I've added a couple of days.

I have come to a conclusion.

For the time I have allotted for the return leg -

THE COUNTRY IS TOO DARN BIG.

THE COUNTRY IS TOO DARN BIG.

Yes and very beautiful!!!!

I have been out west (well to the edge of CA and Oregon and Washington) four times now.  Once was sort of a repeat, other two were designed to be different.

What I found out was that, while things I planned for were neat to see, other things that I did not plan on seeing were almost better.  It just staggers the mind because until you see it, you don't really know about it.

And, I will repeat myself, because I can, by accident we stopped at this store somewhere near Paradox. CO, I think, for a "bathroom break" (only had an outhouse) and were told it was the last place Thelma and Louise stopped at in the move.   Just luck.  Cool.

So Paul, ride, enjoy and, as you well know, sometimes the planned route is well just a suggestion.

My son lives between Red Lodge and Bridger MT. at the base of the Beartooth. He called Sunday and told us that Beartooth Pass was open for one day but they were expecting 30 inches overnight at the summit. Been over the pass twice. Once in July, we saw people snow ski.  Left Red Lodge about 8am and got to Cooke City at lunchtime. I'm only guessing, but on a per season basis, there are almost as many bikes travel through Red Lodge as there are Sturgis. Bone Daddy's bike shop is a must see. There is still time for a thaw but expect high snow drifts along the highway that resemble
tunnels.

Reading about Beatooth and snow, I constantly reflect back to our (three of my friends and me) first trip out west.  Our first long trip, 16 days.  Saw the Grand Canyon and headed north (Monument Valley) to Jackson Hole and then Yellowstone.  No issues (well some wind after the Grand Canyon). Warm, clear skies.  And then we got to the road to Yellowstone and we said "WOW!".

Sometime late May, 2009 on the road to Yellowstone.

While most in this austere group are smart enough to not need this reminder, the bison are not fluffy puppies to be played with.

They are to be watched and admired. From a distance.

Well poop.

Beartooth Highway update: Avalanche danger on the Montana side of Beartooth Pass has forced Montana DOT to pull off the mountain until next week. Until then, Beartooth Pass will remain closed following this week's blizzard that dumped up to 3 feet across the top of the Beartooths, and with it, blowing snow created drifts of up to 10 feet deep. Work by Yellowstone maintenance workers continues on the Wyoming side in reopening US212.

WYOMING DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION

US14A has reopened following a Memorial Day weekend blizzard which dropped up to 2 feet of snow and wind deposited deep drifts between Lovell and Sheridan.
US14A opened for the spring at noon Friday, May 27, but the opener was short-lived as a good old-fashioned spring blizzard rocked the mountains of northwest and north central Wyoming with wet, heavy snow and self-closed the high mountain, scenic roadway.
Wyoming Department of Transportation maintenance crews in Lovell and Burgess Junction worked through the weekend and early this week to clear deep snow and drifts across the top of the Bighorn Mountains.
The reopening of US14A , always dependent upon favorable weather, was official at 5 p.m.
today, June 1.
"It's been a very busy 4 days," said a weary WYDOT heavy equipment operator, Richard Gurney of Lovell. "Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and buckle up. We appreciate everyone's patience as our guys fought the storm and worked on clearing the closed highway."
The annual winter closure of US14A, west of Burgess Junction, is at milepost 76.04 on the Lovell side of the Bighorn Mountains. The seasonal road closure at Burgess Junction is just east of milepost 98.1. WYDOT annually closes this 22-mile stretch of scenic mountain road in the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming about Nov. 30 at the conclusion of the fall hunting season. The high-mountain roadway usually opens for the summer by Memorial Day weekend.
For current road conditions, call 511 or log on to wyoroad.info.

Beartooth Highway closure update 6/2/22 - The last storm event over the weekend ended with 4-6 feet of snow on the roadway. Our crew has backed off snow removal for the time being due to dangerous avalanche conditions. They will resume when it is safe to do so. Reopening date is unknown at this time - please check the MDT 511 map/app for most current updates and information:

My son lives between Red Lodge and Bridger MT. at the base of the Beartooth. He called Sunday and told us that Beartooth Pass was open for one day but they were expecting 30 inches overnight at the summit. Been over the pass twice. Once in July, we saw people snow ski.  Left Red Lodge about 8am and got to Cooke City at lunchtime. I'm only guessing, but on a per season basis, there are almost as many bikes travel through Red Lodge as there are Sturgis. Bone Daddy's bike shop is a must see. There is still time for a thaw but expect high snow drifts along the highway that resemble
tunnels.

I see ur from Wabash. My buddy and I are in Huntington.
