changed the handlebars but not it won't start in gear with the clutch pulled, possibly upset the switch on the left controls? need it if it stalls at a red light.

If that is all you did, then that is the first place to start. There was a post I think within the last 2 months about this same thing. Maybe search for it. Check the little dip switch with a meter, make sure its working.

In the service manual there is the proper test for it, will show if it needs to be normaly open or closed.

Valkpilot, that was the one on the fluid. I was thinking more along the line of this one.

Easy enough to test the switch with a continuity tester.

The two contacts are easily accessible by removing the wires right there on the switch.

Might have to crane your neck a little tho.

If the switch turns out Ok you need to look to where you disconnected the wires to install the new bars.

i have the vtx levers with the wheel adjustment at the top and i had to adjust the number on the wheel to get the trigger to engage, also sprayed contact cleaner then good to go.

Remove the cluth lever itself. Look for two things. First look at the mounting hole. If it is worn and out of round, the the lever is moving but not making contact with the switch. Second look at the piece that interfaces with the switch and make sure it is not worn. Go to Bike Bandit and replace everything including the mounting bolt.

The brass bushing on mine was shot, replaced with no effect.  Finally got a new lever, even though the old looked round enough.  Viola!  All better...
Good luck!
Jeff

Also, if anyone has persistent rust on chrome stuff, try bronze wool.  It's amazing!  ;-)

Grip and/or lever wraps can cause the issue.
As well as adjustable levers as previously mentioned.

I know you probably have already checked ...But in the past people accidentally have pulled the switch wire loose with your result. Might make sure it has clean terminals and is firmly ensconced.

Me too!  I bought my bike 7 years ago and it's never started in gear.  Hmm...time to head out to the garage.

Honda Owner's Manual

GL 1500/CT
VALKYRIE/Tourer

Pg 47

This motorcycle is equipped with a side stand
ignition cut-off system. The engine cannot be
started if the side stand is down, unless the
transmission is in neutral. If the side stand is
up, the engine can be started in neutral or in
gear with the clutch lever pulled in.

If you have a set of standard levers put the clutch one back on, When I fitted the Gold wing GL1500 levers with adjusters I had the same problem, the levels just don't activate the switch. I am living with it as I don't like the reach on the standard.
