I would NOT pay to put that on my bike.  It is certainely usable but its sloppy and worn and there are many better ones out there to buy

Those have been abused by improper/lack-of maintenance.

You mentioned that your splines look as new as the pictures I posted on the other thread.   If you take care of them, I don't think you need to worry about having a spare drive for a least another 150k miles.

If you're worried about having spares of something, get a u-joint (no telling when there'll be another shortage), a side-stand spring, a set of alternator brushes, fork bushings seals and bearings, not to mention at least one of each marker and headlight bulb.  It'll still be a very long time before you use one of those.

I have a u-joint from a 98 that has only 5,000 miles on it. The shaft from this final drive has better splines than mine and is in pristine shape as well as the pinion cup. I plan to e-mail the seller tomorrow to express my thoughts and to see if wants to cut on deal on the shaft and the pinion cup and I send this POS back. He sent this thing with the gearlube in it, what a mess when I opened the box even though he had it wrapped in plastic. I drained the 90w today after posting the pictures to find a considerable amount of fine metal particles stuck to the magnet on the drain plug and particle residue left in the bottom of the drain pan I used. Lack of maintenance is evident. He will receive it back cleaner than it was sent.
I appreciate the heads up on the other spare part suggestions. I have bulbs and the old the headlight bulb after changing it to a new one.

Thanks,

Remember that a NEW shaft, pinion cup and cup seal are just under $100 delivered from HDL.

And see http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,40072.0.html
and search for many more threads on this board for suggestions about lubricating the pinion-cup interface.

Dan,
What HDL are you guys looking at? The HDL site and other Honda parts sites has the shaft priced @ $100 with the pinion joint @ $35. I need to get the correct site here on my favorites list.

Thanks for the forum link, I did see that one in past research but fail at getting on this good price  site.

Brian-

I go to www.hdlparts.com

The shaft (40201-MZ0-A00) is $48.01, the cup (41410-MN5-000) is $35.09 and the oil seal (91261-ME9-005) is $7.34

Those are the part #s for my 98 tourer.  I'm pretty sure that they fit all valks.

HDL also charges only $7.50 for handling for orders under $200 so their final price might be lower.

WOW, this is nuts. The same part number for different year bike with a $60 dollar difference for a new shaft. I never really checked different year bikes like this. The price listing for 97 is $100, I noticed something with the site that JeffK posted with the shaft and pinion cup being cheaper than HDL their u-joint is over $40 more then HDL. I appreciate this site information and will try to spent more time pricing out the different years on these different site.

You guys rock. Thanks,

That's new to me.
Seems that the 97 has a different part # for the shaft.
Did some searching and came up with these previous threads:

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,14732.0.html

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,21049.0.html

According to these threads, there is no difference except the price.
The last time I saw this was when I needed rear wheel dampers and found that the ones for the Interstate have the bushing moulded-in (better and cheaper) instead of the separate rubber and bushing for my 98.  (BTW They fit perfectly)

Okay, update on the return. When I e-mailed the ebay seller stating my case and requesting a full  refund he stated to send it back. In my e-mail I offered to purchase the shaft and no comment so back it went. $25.00 to ship that unit back.
