needed to take the swingarm off.... so I rechecked the u joint, and it is showing a slight amount of end play.... I wouldn't think it would have any end play if the needle bearings were tight and not worn.   Came in to order a new one from HDL, but got in too late.they were closed for the day... will call them in the morning to see if they have one.

I  was browsing hdl the other night and saw a u-joint listed. they didn't indicate if this could be installed in the valk's yokes.anyone know if this part fits our valks?someone a while back showed a valk flange machined out
for a larger joint.be great this is a direct fit.

On page 2 read this thread : U-Joint - HDL Possible Price increase ???

I changed the one in  my 98 Tourer couple of weeks ago. I think you buy the entire Yoke I did.

If you try to order it via the phone, they'll quote you a price of over $130. Order it on line and you'll get it for the price listed....around $64.  Just went through all that a couple weeks ago, ordered two and paid $144 with tax and shipping.

This is the one i found at the valkyrie store at hdl.http://www.directlineparts.com/product.asp?pid=42153&str=2
Why is it in the valk store if it won't fit our valks?

Thanks for the link bentwrench. Last year when Honda changed their u-joint supplier we had a person make a yoke that would work. Searching should find the thread if interested.

My understanding is that one cannot replace just the u-joint, but must replace the entire yoke.  Apparently, the price has increased within the past week from under $70 to over $130.  See this thread
http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,42366.0.html

I believe there should be absolutely NO play in this part, so ANY free play is TOO much.

The good news is that the part is no longer on back order.

Thanks Jimmy!!!!! U da Man!!!!!!!  I'll be back on the road in the morning!!!!!

The u joint is the cross and the yoke all in one.  I don't think the cross is replaceable in the stock form.

Looks like I'm a week too late....I think they found the difference in their pricing and changed it.

Hey HG,

How many Valkyrie u-joint/yokes have you had to replace at your place?  I've only had to replace one.  Are we tied now, or are you in the lead???   2funny

We are tied up!!!! LOL  but I had a heck of a time getting the driveshaft to go into the ujoint.....  I pre fit it before mounting it....  but never did get it to go into the splines when the joint was mounted....  finally repulled the swingarm, put it all together.. remounted the swingarm and put the hub inplace.....  was not an easy day..the danged shaft just wouldn't go into the splines....4 hrs trying.
But she's all together now!!!!  I was able to add some new words to my vocabulary... coolsmiley

Mark, did you raise the swing up to almost level to try the stab or leave it hanging down? Closer to level you have it, the easier it is.

I've had the best luck putting the bike in gear, leveling the swingarm and using the drive flange to rotate the shaft alittle back and forth to stab the u joint. If that doesn't get it the beer and words come into play fairly quickly.

I use a 3 foot piece of cable TV wire...Shine a flashlight up the tube take a old CB antenna and pick the u-joint up put the cable wire under the u-joint and install the shaft then pull the wire out. I've had trouble many times getting it to " GO " after doing this I can install one on the first try.

I tried ALL of the above!!!!!!  what finally worked was simular to what Joe did....  had a piece of 1/16 X 3/4 aluminum flatbar that I bent a slight rise in one end.... slid it up the tube and under the u joint and the splines went in!  pulled the flatbar out.
I had tried in gear, out of gear, turning, pushing, raising and lowering swing arm at all degrees of level.....The shaft would go into the joint, but did not lineup enough to slip into the splines.  It was even a tight fit when pre fitting the joint to the shaft before putting it together.  All the splines looked good.

  Thanks Guys

Was the light on or off. I find it easy to hit either way. And a tight fit is a plus. Grin

If the new price is back to $130, the yoke/u-joint unit from Free Pass (the rebuildable one) looks a lot better.  It's under $100 and the u-joint can be greased and replaced cheaply.

Both me and Hayhauler have one of them for the next change.

+1 on having the bike in gear and I agree with Valker on having the swingarm level. This combination worked where having the swingarm down did not.
